2 100 th Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima Our Lady of Fatima appeared to three children, Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta, at Fatima, Portugal 100 years ago on May 13, She then appeared on the 13 th of each of the following months except August when the children were held in jail. Her last apparition was on Oct 13, At the last apparition, 70,000 people were amazed to observed a miracle when the sun danced in the sky. You are invited to come to St. John s next Saturday, May 13. We will celebrate the 100 th anniversary. We will pray the Rosary at 12noon outside the Divine Mercy Chapel, at 4pm in the church, and at 6:30pm in a procession. There will also be confessions at 4pm. Mass will be celebrated at 5pm and after the 6:30pm rosary and procession. Pope Francis has provided that a plenary indulgence can be granted on that day. Our prayers will include all that is required for a person to be granted this indulgence. One of the ordinary conditions necessary to be granted a plenary indulgence is to go to confession within 20 days of May 13. To make this easy, we will have two priests hearing confessions during the 4pm hour that Saturday. To celebrate this special day, Pope Francis will be in Fatima that Saturday. One of the things he will do there is to canonize the two younger children, Francisco, and Jacinta, who died shortly after the apparitions. Lucia died February 13, 2005 at the age of 97. Pilgrims arrive in Fatima throughout the year, but especially in the summer and on the feast days of May 13 and October 13. On May 12 and October 12, crowds of pilgrims (as many as 75,000) throng the small town in cars, on bicycles, in donkey carts, or on foot. Some approach the shrine on their knees in penance. Once in Fatima, they camp out and wait for dawn. On the 13th, pilgrims wave their handkerchiefs in homage as a statue of Our Lady of Fatima is passed through the central square between about 10am and 12:30pm. There are large torch-light processions held in the evenings. Excerpts The primary building at the shrine is the Basilica of Our Lady of Fatima, a gleaming Neoclassical church begun on May 13, 1928, and consecrated on October 7, Its slender central spire rises 65 meters high. The church is flanked by monumental colonnades and overlooks a large open plaza, the center of which is occupied by a Monument to the Sacred Heart of Jesus (1932). The monument stands over a spring that was discovered there and was, according to the shrine, "the instrument of many graces." Guards at the basilica doors may stop visitors who are not suitably dressed, which means general modesty, no shorts on men, and skirts or dresses on women. Inside, there are 15 altars dedicated to the 15 mysteries of the rosary as well as the tombs of the young visionaries, Francisco Marto and Jacinta Marto, who died in 1919 and 1920 respectively and were beatified in
