4 Our Parish is hosting a Trivia FUN Night on Saturday, November 21 at the Educational Center with doors open at 6:30 PM and game time at 7 PM. This is an important fund-raiser for our parish. What is Trivia Night? Basically, teams of 6-10 people compete as a team against other teams. There are 8 rounds of trivia questions. People can register as an entire team (made up of family members, co-workers, etc.), or you can reserve a single seat and join a table that is looking for players. There is an admission fee of $25. The winning table at the end of the evening receives prizes. There will be specialty food, a cash bar, and surprises. Many different categories of questions will be used, so a table represented by a variety of ages is best. Try out your trivia knowledge on the following questions about TELEVISION (answers on the opposite side of this page). HIGHLIGHTS OF DIOCESAN COUNCIL XXI AT BOUNDBROOK, NEW JERSEY July 12-15, 2009 ~ Present at the Council in addition to the Metropolitan were 59 priests, and 90 lay delegates from 57 parishes. ~ There are 14 deaneries and 78 parishes, of which 11 are missions. There are 105 priests, 22 deacons, and 1 military chaplain. ~ The census is as follows: 7,264 members 18 and over; 1,660 under 18 for a total of 8,924 members. Of that number, 2,709 are 65+. There are 244 college students and 15 in the military. ~ The Parish Assessment was raised to $60 per adult member annually. The minimum clergy salary scale was unchanged, but updated. The compensation package is to be increased annually beginning in January by the COLA (cost of living percentage issued by the government). ~ Changes were made to Diocesan By-Laws dealing with the canonical procedures electing an auxiliary bishop, and outlining guidelines for deacons, sub-deacons and readers. ~ The new Diocesan Website: acrod.org will be launched on August 17. ~ There was much discussion on Mission and Outreach. Special focus was given to the ideas of Proportional Giving and Stewardship as a means of furthering the growth and mission of the Diocese. Because of this, and the need to develop such programs to aid the local parishes and the Diocese, the Council was recessed until next July when the sessions will resume in Johnstown (date to be determined). ~ The following were elected as Diocesan Trustees (two new and four returning): Anthony Horbal, Johnstown, PA;John Bilanin, Phoenixville, PA; Daniel Breno, Potomac, MD; Theodore Koast; Binghamton, NY; Joseph Parimucha, Potomac, MD; Sharon Peifer, Ambridge, PA; and Michael Fetsko, Cathedral financial Secretary who is automatically a Member of the Diocesan Board of Trustees. 5 Does this get you to think?... Isn t it strange how a $20 bill seems like such a large amount when you donate it to the church, but such a small amount when you go shopping? Isn t it strange how 1 hour seems so long when you re at church, and how short that seems when you re watching a good movie? Isn t it strange that you can t find a word to say when you re praying, but you have no trouble thinking what to talk about with a friend? Isn t it strange how difficult it is to read one chapter of the Bible, but how easy it is to read 100 pages of a popular novel? Isn t it strange how we need to know 2-3 weeks ahead about an event at church, but we can adjust our schedule for other events at the last minute? Isn t it strange how difficult it is to learn a fact about God to share it with others; but how easy it is to learn, understand and repeat gossip? ISN T IT STRANGE! YOU ARE INVITED! St. Mary Antiochian Orthodox Church in Westmont will have a Middle Eastern Food fund-raiser on Saturday, August 15 from 11 AM to 6 PM in the church hall at 111 Alberta Avenue. Eat In or Take Out: Meat Pies, Syrian Rice, Spinach Pies, Baked Kibbee, Syrian Green Beans, Lamb Shish-kabob, Pita Bread, Chick Pea Dip, Grape Leaves, Desserts! PLEASE REMEMBER: IF FATHER MILORO IS NOT AVAILABLE, AND THERE IS AN EMERGENCY, PLEASE CALL THE AND THE ANSWERING SERVICE WILL CONTACT FATHER GLEASON OR FATHER FERENCZ AT THE SEMINARY. RESULTS OF CHRISTMAS IN JULY PROJECT THE CHRISTMAS TREE IN THE CATHEDRAL VESTIBULE BROUGHT IN A TOTAL OF $1,000! AS ADVERTISED, THIS MONEY IS BEING GIVEN TO THE AREA FOOD BANKS TO HELP FEED THE NEEDY. WE ARE GRATEFUL TO JOAN AND RON BOST FOR SPONSORING THE CHRISTMAS IN JULY TREE. AND TO ALL OF YOU. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Also, there was a Christmas in July project at the Galleria Mall for the area food banks. That project netted $2,700 for area food banks!
6 A KEEPER Their marriage was good, their dreams focused. Their best friends lived barely a wave away. I can see them now, Dad in trousers, tee shirt and a hat, and Mom in a house dress, pitcher in one hand, and dish towel in the other. It was the time for fixing things. A curtain rod, the kitchen radio, a screen door, the oven door, the hem in a dress. Things we keep. It was a way of life. Sometimes it made me crazy. All that re-fixing, eating, renewing, I wanted just once to be wasteful. Waste meant affluence. Throwing things away meant you knew there would always be more. But then my mother died, and on that clear summer s night, in the warmth of the hospital room, I was struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn t any more. Sometimes what we care about most gets all used up and goes away never to return. So while we have it it s best we love it, and care for it, and fix it when it s broken and heal it when it s sick. This is true for marriage and old cars and children with bad report cards dogs and cats with bad hips and aging parents and grandparents. We keep them all because they re worth it! Some things we keep like a best friend who moved away, or a classmate we grew up with. There are just some things that make life important, like people we know who are special. And so we keep them close. Count your keepers! - Selected ATTENTION CATHEDRAL SENIORS The Seniors group will enjoy a play at Mountain Playhouse on Thursday, October 1 at 2 PM. The Play: Late Night Catechism 2. Those who wish will enjoy dinner together at a nearby restaurant. There is a sign-up sheet in the vestibule. Reservations must be made by August 9 th. Payment is due by September 6 th. See Carol Devine (524 Decker Avenue) or call Carol at Note: there is no Seniors meeting in August. Meetings will resume in September with a meeting on Tuesday, September 8. Hostesses are Pani Miloro and Ann Evanisko. DON T FORGET to buy your scrip from Pani Baranik on Sundays in the Auditorium. Every gift card you buy brings money back into the Cathedral. Remember that scrip gift cards are perfect for birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays. You can also use scrip cards to shop at many local retailers and restaurants. CATHEDRAL EXPENSES CAN RUN AS HIGH AS $25,000/MONTH. PLEASE DO YOUR FAIR SHARE. GIVE.RECEIVE.REJOICE!
