1 St. James the Apostle and Our Lady of the Lake/Mount Carmel is a Roman Catholic Parish with the Eucharist as the center of its life. Our mission, as disciples of Jesus Christ, is to build up the Kingdom of God by leading, nourishing and serving the community in Word and Sacrament. FROM THE DESK of FR. SZYMON KURPIOS OCTOBER 15, 2017 Today, Jesus presents us with the king (the Father, inviting his guests, through his servants (the apostles) to the banquet of the Holy Alliance of his son with mankind (our salvation). First, he did it with Israel, but they refused to come. (Mt 22:3). Despite the refusal, the Father kept on insisting: I have prepared a banquet, ( ) and now everything is ready: come then, to the wedding feast (v.4). But that rebuff, seizing the servants, insulting and killing them, makes the king angry, so he sent his troops to destroy the murderers and burn their city, (cf. Mt 22:6-7) Jerusalem. Consequently, the apostles were sent to the crossroads to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ. All were invited, good and bad alike, so the hall was filled with guests. However, the question is not only to attend the banquet when invited, but also, and to a great extent, the dignity displayed when at the banquet (the wedding garment). St. Jerome commented that the marriage garment is the commandments of the Lord, and the works done under the Law and Gospel, and the clothing of the new man. That is, the deeds of charity that must accompany our faith. We know that Mother Teresa of Calcutta, used to go out every night looking for the moribund to give them, with love, a proper dying: clean, tucked in, and if possible, baptized. Once, she said I am not afraid of dying, because when I go before the Father, there will be so many poor that I gave Him with wedding garments, that they will know how to defend me. Blessed she may be! Let us learn that lesson, too. Readings for this Week - 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading: Isaiah 25:6-10a: This passage describes the new Jerusalem as a heavenly banquet on the mountain with the Lord God wiping away all tears. Second Reading: Philippians 4:12-14, 19-20: Paul thanks the Philippians for alleviating his hardships. He stresses that he is as accustomed to poverty and finds all his strength in Christ. Gospel: Matthew 22:1-14: Speaking to the chief priests and the elders, Jesus relates the parable of the wedding banquet. Jesus warns the elders, the invited are many, the elect are few. Readings for Next Week First Reading: Isaiah 45:1, 4-6 Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 1:1-5b Gospel: Matthew 22:15-21

The niches are usually inscribed with the person s name and dates of birth and death. They are constructed to serve as permanent resting places for our loved ones in a churchyard and landscaped terrace. We pray that this holy ground becomes a final resting place for many of our loved ones. Interested in becoming an Altar Server? Join us at the Exhibit held at the Archives of the Archdiocese of New York on the grounds of St. Joseph s Seminary in Yonkers, NY. The Exhibit explores how clergy, religious and ordinary New York Catholics here and on the front, dealt with the challenges of the first total mobilization war. Follow along in real time with Fr. Francis Duffy, priest of the Archdiocese of New York from 1896 to 1932, tweeting from his WWI A Message from the Executive Director of Emmanuel House The electrical fire in our building at the end of February caused substantial damage to the structure, requiring its demolition and leaving us homeless! High winds and torrential rains caused the tarps to be pulled away from over where the roof had been removed. We had to discard most of our furniture, donated clothing, baby items/supplies/equipment, books and videos! Needless to say, we need your help now to reopen! In addition to needing the deposit and 1st month s rent, we also need to replace everything that was lost in the fire and storms. During the last six months I have been working out of my car and using my cell phone but it has not been enough. Our goal has always been to make sure Moms and Moms-to-Be (and Dads and Dads-to-Be) have the resources they need to take care of their babies and their families in a loving, healthy and supportive home. We had to pull back the amount of help we could offer. Without a place for our families to come to, their Little Ones lose out the most and we just don t want that to happen. We need to find a new home as soon as possible to correct this situation. In order for us to secure a new home, we need to pull together an emergency fund quickly and for that we need your help! We need a place where Moms-to-Be can get the help they need to Choose Life, where moms and their Little Ones can get what they need for a quality of life they deserve a place where every baby, child and parent is safe and well cared for having Chosen Life! Many who come to Emmanuel House are in crisis due to unplanned pregnancies and are in great need of help your help. They need to get out of crisis and on their feet! Be their Guardian Angel! Donate your time, talents and treasures and you will make a difference! Donate NOW to Emmanuel House and you can make sure our Families have a loving and supportive haven to come to so that each of their Little Ones is well cared for and nurtured. Thank you in advance for whatever you can do! God Bless You! Rita McSweeney O Brien,
