1 St. James the Apostle and Our Lady of the Lake/Mount Carmel is a Roman Catholic Parish with the Eucharist as the center of its life. Our mission, as disciples of Jesus Christ, is to build up the Kingdom of God by leading, nourishing and serving the community in Word and Sacrament. FROM THE DESK OF FR. ADOLPHUS MUOGHALU SEPTEMBER 24, 2017 LIFE IS NOT FAIR! PRAISE GOD IN EVERYTHING We do have a lovely parable this Sunday about the laborers in the vineyard. This is one of those parables that will confuse us, rather than strengthen our faith. This parable is only found in the Gospel of St. Matthew, Jesus tells us that our God is a generous God who desires to save all people, all nations. In those days, the workers were paid for their labors at the end of the workday rather than at the middle or at the end of the month as we have in our present time. When it came time to pay, the landowner began with those workers who had labored for only an hour. Everyone was amazed when they saw that those workers were given a full day s pay, for only one hour s work. You can imagine how the rest of the workers began to reason to themselves. The ones who worked two hours must be getting twice the daily rate, and the ones who worked all day must be getting eight denarii. The parable deals only with the first and the last groups, for rather obvious reasons ( the last will be first, and the first will be last ). In our normal world today, that business owner s must be investigated for ethical issues looks unfair from our human standard but we ought to remember that God s ways are not our ways. In the parable, God is the landowner. The Jews - to whom the Good News was first announced - and the nonjews and late-comers were all invited to the vineyard. God wants all to be saved, not only the Jewish people. Let us rejoice that God invited us to God s vineyard. Let us rejoice that eternal life with God is offered to all people, even to that nasty neighbor whom I dislike. Respect Life Sunday, October 1, 2017 The Respect Life Program, sponsored by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, started in 1972 and begins anew each October, the month set aside by the Bishops as Respect Life Month. The program promotes respect for all human life in light of our intrinsic dignity as having been created in God s image and likeness. We are called to an eternal destiny with him. Materials are designed each year to assist those in various roles within the church to help Catholics understand, value, and become engaged in supporting the dignity of every person, especially by cherishing God s gift of life. All are invited to the Life Chain in Mt. Kisco on Sunday, October 1st at 2pm., and to the Rosary Rally on Saturday, October 14 at noon in Corner Stone Park in Carmel. They are constructed to serve as permanent resting places for our loved ones in a churchyard and landscaped terrace. We pray that this holy ground becomes a final resting place for many of our loved ones. Interested in becoming an Altar Server?
