PALM SUNDAY - TRIDENTINE 3
4 REFLECTIONS THE PASSION OF CHRIST Twice each liturgical year the Passion of the Lord is read at Mass from two different Gospels. On Palm Sunday the Passion is taken from one of the three Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke) and on Good Friday the Passion is always that from the Gospel of Saint John. This year we are in liturgical cycle C, which means that the Passion of Saint Luke is read. For the Passion readings, the Church allows that laity can read designated parts of the Passion, though the priest alone takes the part of Christ. The congregation is allowed a role in the Passion, such as when the crowds called for the crucifixion of our Lord. Assuming this role is a powerful way to drive home the point that all of us, by our personal sins, bear guilt in the crucifixion of Christ. Among the three Synoptic Gospels there are many similarities in the manner in which the Passion is recounted. In fact, the word Synoptic means common view, reflecting this common lens through which the three Evangelists view the Gospel events. The Gospel of Saint John, on the other hand, is of a different tone and style. As one ancient Christian writer put it, the Synoptic Gospels provide the flesh and bone of our Lord whereas Saint John provides us with his spirit. All four Gospels are inspired by God and without error, yet even while they record historical events each one does so with some unique perspectives. Among the Synoptic Gospels, for instance, only Saint Luke records details related to the repentance of the Good Thief crucified beside our Lord. The unique contribution of Saint Matthew includes the detail that the wife of Pontius Pilate had a troubling dream regarding Jesus, for which reason she warned her husband not to have anything to do with his condemnation. This may help account for the fact that Pilate, who normally thought nothing of crucifying criminals even hundreds in succession went to such lengths to release our Lord and finally washed his hands of complicity in his condemnation. With regard to the Passion as presented by Saint John, one difference to look for regards the general tone that runs throughout: this Beloved Disciple (as he is known) focuses less on the outrages committed against our Lord and more upon Jesus Christ as King and Son of God. A couple examples include: in the garden arrest when Jesus identifies Himself to his captors as I am they all fall to the ground, absolutely powerless, in the presence of divinity; when Jesus is accused before Pilate there is much attention given to his title as King, such that even Pilate comments, So you are a King! Finally, from the Passion of Saint John we know the important detail that at the very time that the Jewish priests were sacrificing the lambs for the Passover Supper, Jesus was sacrificed on the Cross, the true High Priest and Sacrificial Lamb thereafter. May our attentive hearing of the Passions lead us to deeper awareness of our own sinfulness and the insurmountable heights of divine love! Lord Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner! HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL NOTES Dear Friends - As part of our school's accreditation process, the faculty and staff, School Advisory Board, and Father Echert are reviewing our academic program, our policies and procedures, as well as our mission and vision as the parish school of Holy Trinity Church. Because we are a small school, a great deal of work has fallen to the faculty and staff of our school. The MNSAA Accrediting Agency accredits schools, ranging from small schools of 50 students to large schools with close to 1000 students. However, the process is the same for all schools regardless of their size. It is through the accreditation process that our school builds the foundation and framework to have the best possible educational program for our learners. By having an outside agency validate our school's educational program, we receive validation that our school meets high standards that our families and our stakeholders expect of our school. The accreditation process also wants our school to develop a long-range strategic plan that is focused on educational excellence, student growth and achievement, as well as ongoing school improvement, including strategies to grow our enrollment through a variety of marketing initiatives. We are excited for our future and look forward to sharing our school's strategic plan with you in the coming months. In the coming weeks, right after Easter, we will be putting envelopes in the pews for the Mother and Father's Day Tributes for the Holy Trinity Scholarship Fund. This is a beautiful way to honor the mothers and fathers -- or their memories -- in your life. The Scholarship Fund provides many families with the opportunity to send their children to Holy Trinity School, a place where the children can learn and grow in a faith-filled, joyful, Catholic environment. The families who received the scholarships are tremendously grateful for the generosity and kindness that you show by contributing to the Mother and Father's Day Tribute Scholarship Fund. As we enter into Holy Week, it is my hope that you and your family have had a meaningful Lenten journey and will feel His presence during this extraordinary time. Though the road we travel may have a few twists and turns, we know that Jesus is with us on the journey, leading us not to a deadend, but rather to His resurrection. May God bless you all, Mrs. Kincs, Principal RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Our second grade students in the Religious Education Program and Holy Trinity School will receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion for the first time on Sat., Apr. 27. The children have enthusiastically learned as much as they could about Christ and this Sacrament as they have prepared; it is beautiful to witness! Would you please keep them and their teachers, Mrs. Schroeder and Mrs. Seliga, in your thoughts and prayers as they make their final preparations? Through your prayers may God abundantly bless each of them on the day of their First Communion. 4
5 EASTER MASSES & HOLY COMMUNION Please remember that Easter are heavily attended so we encourage you to arrive early to insure your place in the church. Please encourage Catholic family members who have drifted away from the practice of the Faith to join you for Easter Mass, though they must refrain from Holy Communion, in accord with the law of the Church, unless they have made a good sacramental Confession sometime prior to Mass. Non-Catholics are also invited to Easter but must refrain from the reception of Holy Communion. VEILED STATUES OF PASSIONTIDE Why do we cover the statues and crucifix of the church beginning the Fifth Sunday of Lent and continuing until Easter? We have entered the period of the Passion of the Lord. Just as Jesus hid himself from his enemies for a time, so we hide the image of our Lord and the saints. These coverings add a solemn tone to our prayer and worship and also remind us that our Lord kept hidden his Divinity throughout the Passion. BLESSING OF EASTER FOOD There will be a traditional blessing of food on Holy Saturday, Apr. 20, in the Church of Holy Trinity at 11:30 am. The blessing is intended for food which will be eaten on Easter. PALM SUNDAY WEEKEND SALES Please join fellow parishioners on Palm Sunday weekend (April 13 & 14) for some wonderful seasonal sales and fun at Holy Trinity Church after all the. Sales include CCW Madonna Bake goods, hand carved olive wood carvings from the Holy Land by Blest Art, religious gifts by Divine Inspirations, and photos with the Easter Bunny.
