1 THE SUNDAY OF THE PASSION: PALM SUNDAY The Holy Eucharist Rite I April 14, :00 am Welcome! We are glad you chose to worship with us today and invite you to participate fully in our service. In the Parish House Children are always welcome in the church for all or part of the service, but should you want to use it, nursery care is available in the Parish House building, around the left side of the church. Restrooms are also in the Parish House. A Children s Corner is available in the back of the church. Visitor s Card Please fill out a visitor s card (found on the hook in your pew) so we can get to know you better. You may hand it to an usher or put it in the offering plate. Flow of Worship We begin our service with the WORD including a SERMON, continue with PRAYERS, and follow with COMMUNION. Words in italics provide directions about when it is customary to stand, sit or kneel. If any of this is physically difficult for you, please remain seated. Bold type indicates words we will speak together. Music not printed in the bulletin is in the blue hymnal. Communion Baptized Christians are welcome to receive communion and ALL are welcome to come forward for a blessing. To receive the bread, hold your hands out together. To receive the wine, help the server by guiding the chalice. If you prefer, you may dip (intinct) the bread in the wine chalice. If you wish to receive a blessing, or only bread, simply place your hands across your chest when the priest or server comes to you. Children are welcome to receive communion at the discretion of their parents. Wherever you are in your faith journey, we welcome you at Trinity. God s grace sustains us as we strive to know, love and serve others in our daily lives. Thank you for worshiping with us.

2 VOLUNTARY March Henry Purcell ( ) THE ENTRANCE RITEI The people stand to sing the Processional Hymn. PROCESSIONAL HYMN All glory, laud, and honor Valet will ich dir geben Hymnal 154 THE COLLECT OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Almighty and ever living God, who, of thy tender love towards mankind, hast sent thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon him our flesh, and to suffer death upon the cross, that all mankind should follow the example of his great humility: Mercifully grant that we may both follow the example of his patience, and also be make partakers of his resurrection; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. THE WORD OF GODI The people are seated for the First Lesson, Psalm, and Second Lesson. THE FIRST LESSON The servant of the Lord submits to suffering Isaiah 50:4-9a The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens--wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backward. I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. The Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. It is the Lord GOD who helps me; who will declare me guilty? The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 2

3 THE GRADUAL PSALM In te, Domine, speravi Psalm 31:9-16 The congregation repeats the Refrain after the choir or cantor and again after each group of verses as indicated. 9 Have mercy on me, O LORD, for I am in trouble; * my eye is consumed with sorrow, and also my throat and my belly. 10 For my life is wasted with grief, and my years with sighing; * my strength fails me because of affliction, and my bones are consumed. REFRAIN 11 I have become a reproach to all my enemies and even to my neighbors, a dismay to those of my acquaintance; * when they see me in the street they avoid me. 12 I am forgotten like a dead man, out of mind; * I am as useless as a broken pot. REFRAIN 13 For I have heard the whispering of the crowd; fear is all around; * they put their heads together against me; they plot to take my life. 14 But as for me, I have trusted in you, O LORD. * I have said, You are my God. REFRAIN 15 My times are in your hand; * rescue me from the hand of my enemies, and from those who persecute me. 16 Make your face to shine upon your servant, * and in your loving-kindness save me. REFRAIN THE SECOND LESSON Humbled to the point of death on a cross Philippians 2:5-11 Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death--even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 3
