THE SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT The Holy Eucharist Rite II March 17, :45 am Welcome! We are glad you chose to worship with us today and invite you to participate fully in our service. In the Parish House Children are always welcome in the church for all or part of the service, but should you want to use it, nursery care is available in the Parish House building, around the left side of the church. Restrooms are also in the Parish House. A Children s Corner is available in the back of the church. Visitor s Card Please fill out a visitor s card (found on the hook in your pew) so we can get to know you better. You may hand it to an usher or put it in the offering plate. Flow of Worship We begin our service with the WORD including a SERMON, continue with PRAYERS, and follow with COMMUNION. Words in italics provide directions about when it is customary to stand, sit or kneel. If any of this is physically difficult for you, please remain seated. Bold type indicates words we will speak together. Music not printed in the bulletin is in the blue hymnal. Communion Baptized Christians are welcome to receive communion and ALL are welcome to come forward for a blessing. To receive the bread, hold your hands out together. To receive the wine, help the server by guiding the chalice. If you prefer, you may dip (intinct) the bread in the wine chalice. If you wish to receive a blessing, or only bread, simply place your hands across your chest when the priest or server comes to you. Children are welcome to receive communion at the discretion of their parents. Wherever you are in your faith journey, we welcome you at Trinity. God s grace sustains us as we strive to know, love and serve others in our daily lives. Thank you for worshiping with us.

2 THE ENTRANCE RITEI The people stand and remain standing through the Collect of the Day. THE PENITENTIAL ORDER Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins. His mercy endures forever. The Presider may read one of the following: Jesus said, The first commandments is this: Hear, O Israel: The Lord your God is the only Lord. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these. Mark 12:29-31 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8,9 Since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:14,16 CONFESSION Recited by all. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The presider offers absolution Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy: Be gracious to all who have gone astray from your ways, and bring them again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of your Word, Jesus Christ your Son; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The people are seated for the First Lesson, Psalm, and Second Lesson. 3 THE WORD OF GODI THE FIRST LESSON The covenant with Abram and his descendants Genesis 15:1-12, The word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, "Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great." But Abram said, "O Lord GOD, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?" And Abram said, "You have given me no offspring, and so a slave born in my house is to be my heir." But the word of the LORD came to him, "This man shall not be your heir; no one but your very own issue shall be your heir." He brought him outside and said, "Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your descendants be." And he believed the LORD; and the LORD reckoned it to him as righteousness. Then he said to him, "I am the LORD who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess." But he said, "O Lord GOD, how am I to know that I shall possess it?" He said to him, "Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon." He brought him all these and cut them in two, laying each half over against the other; but he did not cut the birds in two. And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away. As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a deep and terrifying darkness descended upon him. When the sun had gone down and it was dark, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, "To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates." The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE PSALM Dominus illuminatio Psalm 27 1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom then shall I fear? * the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom then shall I be afraid? 2 When evildoers came upon me to eat up my flesh, *

4 it was they, my foes and my adversaries, who stumbled and fell. 3 Though an army should encamp against me, * yet my heart shall not be afraid; 4 And though war should rise up against me, * yet will I put my trust in him. 5 One thing have I asked of the LORD; one thing I seek; * that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life; 6 To behold the fair beauty of the LORD * and to seek him in his temple. 7 For in the day of trouble he shall keep me safe in his shelter; * he shall hide me in the secrecy of his dwelling and set me high upon a rock. 8 Even now he lifts up my head * above my enemies round about me. 9 Therefore I will offer in his dwelling an oblation with sounds of great gladness; * I will sing and make music to the LORD. 10 Hearken to my voice, O LORD, when I call; * have mercy on me and answer me. 11 You speak in my heart and say, "Seek my face." * Your face, LORD, will I seek. 12 Hide not your face from me, * nor turn away your servant in displeasure. 13 You have been my helper; cast me not away; * do not forsake me, O God of my salvation. 14 Though my father and my mother forsake me, * the LORD will sustain me. 15 Show me your way, O LORD; * lead me on a level path, because of my enemies. 16 Deliver me not into the hand of my adversaries, * for false witnesses have risen up against me, and also those who speak malice. 17 What if I had not believed that I should see the goodness of the LORD * in the land of the living! 18 O tarry and await the LORD'S pleasure; be strong, and he shall comfort your heart; * wait patiently for the LORD.

5 THE SECOND LESSON Our citizenship is in heaven from where we expect a Savior Philippians 3:17-4:1 Brothers and sisters, join in imitating me, and observe those who live according to the example you have in us. For many live as enemies of the cross of Christ; I have often told you of them, and now I tell you even with tears. Their end is destruction; their god is the belly; and their glory is in their shame; their minds are set on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. He will transform the body of our humiliation that it may be conformed to the body of his glory, by the power that also enables him to make all things subject to himself. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The people stand to sing the Sequence Hymn, and remain standing for the Gospel. SEQUENCE HYMN What wondrous love is this Wondrous Love Hymnal 439 THE GOSPEL I have desired to gather Jerusalem as a hen gathers her brood Luke 13:31-35 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ. Some Pharisees came and said to Jesus, "Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you." He said to them, "Go and tell that fox for me, 'Listen, I am casting out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I finish my work. Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way, because it is impossible for a prophet to be killed outside of Jerusalem.' Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! See, your house is left to you. And I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, 'Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.'" The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. THE GOSPEL REFLECTION The people stand for the Nicene Creed and the Prayers of the People. The Rev. Paul Nancarrow and the people THE NICENE CREED Said by all We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,

6 and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE After each intercession: Lord of salvation, Have mercy on us. In the petition for the sick, the people join in naming those with special needs. Pat Clark*, Champe Davis, Butch Debord, Ann Charles Dodd, Kathy Rae Dollins, Robert Dunn*, Susie Finlay, Sean Flanders*, Mike Gordon, Mike and Elizabeth Hanna, Jasmine Kovacks, Seth Long, Preston Mayson*, Leslie McMacken, Peter Meyers, Jimbo Moore, Easton Morgan*, Toni Nelson* Final intercession Remembering the blessed Virgin Mary, Blessed Joseph, and all the saints, let us offer ourselves and one another to the living God through Christ. To you, O Lord our God. Concluding Collect Blessed are you, God of our ancestors, who sent your Son to die for our sins. Receive the prayers we offer this day and prepare us to take up our citizenship in the heavenly Jerusalem; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE PEACE The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. The people greet one another with a sign of God s peace and then are seated. THE HOLY COMMUNIONI THE OFFERTORY The people gather in the chancel while singing the Offertory Hymn. All are welcome forward. There is a place here for you! Offering plates are located at the steps to the chancel, and offerings may be placed there as you come forward. The collection taken at this liturgy is divided between the maintenance and mission of Trinity Episcopal Church and the charitable causes we support. We are grateful for your generous giving.

7 OFFERTORY HYMN Sung by all. Take my life, and let it be Hollingside Hymnal 707 THE GREAT THANKSGIVING EUCHARISTIC PRAYER 2 The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. We praise you and we bless you, holy and gracious God, source of life abundant. From before time you made ready the creation. Your Spirit moved over the deep and brought all things into being: sun, moon, and stars; earth, winds, and waters; and every living thing. You made us in your image, and taught us to walk in your ways. But we rebelled against you, and wandered far away; and yet, as a mother cares for her children, you would not forget us. Time and again you called us to live in the fullness of your love. And so this day we join with Saints and Angels in the chorus of praise that rings through eternity, lifting our voices to magnify you as we sing: Sung by all. LAND OF RESTt Glory and honor and praise to you, holy and living God. To deliver us from the power of sin and death and to reveal the riches of your grace, you looked with favor upon Mary, your willing servant, that she might conceive and bear a son, Jesus the holy child of God. Living among us, Jesus loved us.

8 He broke bread with outcasts and sinners, healed the sick, and proclaimed good news to the poor. He yearned to draw all the world to himself. Yet we were heedless of his call to walk in love. Then, the time came for him to complete upon the cross the sacrifice of his life, and to be glorified by you. On the night before he died for us, Jesus was at table with his friends. He took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to them, and said: Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine. Again, he gave thanks to you, gave it to them, and said: Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Now gathered at your table, O God of all creation, and remembering Christ, crucified and risen, who was and is and is to come, we offer to you our gifts of bread and wine, and ourselves, a living sacrifice. Pour out your Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Body and Blood of Christ. Breathe your Spirit over the whole earth and make us your new creation, the Body of Christ given for the world you have made. In the fullness of time bring us, with all your saints, from every tribe and language and people and nation, to feast at the banquet prepared from the foundation of the world. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN. As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray. THE LORD S PRAYER Sung by all.

9 THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. The Gifts of God for the People of God. MINISTRATION OF COMMUNION All baptized Christians are welcome to receive Communion. Those not yet baptized may receive a blessing. COMMUNION HYMN Sung by all. For the bread which you have broken Beng-Li Hymnal 340 THE POSTCOMMUNION PRAYER Recited by all. Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. RECESSIONAL HYMN Sung by all. 13 Bread for World s 2019 Letter Writing Campaign On March 17, 24, and 31 from after the 7:45 service until 15 minutes after the end of the 11:00 service Trinity will host a letter writing table in McCracken Hall to urge our government to continue to support programs that address the issues of hunger and poverty, both in the United States and throughout the world. We ask that you support this effort by taking time to send a personal letter to each of our area s congressional representatives urging their support of US and global nutrition programs. A letter writing table will be set up in McCracken Hall with all the essentials. We know we are called to love and serve our neighbor, whether next door or across the world. We know personal letters from constituents are influential with elected officials. We know that current programs have reduced hunger and poverty, but there are still many millions of people who are at risk. So, we invite you to take this small individual action that becomes powerful when we join with others. 13
