THE FIRST SUNDAY AFTER CHRISTMAS DAY Christmas Festival of Lessons and Carols December 30, :00 am Trinity Episcopal Church Founded in 1746 Staunton, Virginia

VOLUNTARY Salutation Carol Medieval Carol; arr. Robert Powell (b. 1932) The people stand to sing the Processional Hymn, and remain standing through the Collect of the Day. PROCESSIONAL HYMN Angels we have heard on high Gloria Hymnal 96 BIDDING PRAYER Beloved in Christ, in this Christmastide, let it be our care and delight to hear again the message of the Angels, and in heart and mind to go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, and the Babe lying in a manger. Let us read and mark in Holy Scripture the tale of the loving purposes of God from the first days of our disobedience unto the glorious Redemption brought us by this holy Child; and let us make this place glad with our carols of praise. But first, let us pray for the needs of his whole world; for peace and goodwill over all the earth; for the mission and unity of the Church for which he died, and especially in this country and within this city. And because this of all things would rejoice his heart, let us at this time remember in his name the poor and the helpless, the hungry and the oppressed; the sick and those who mourn; the lonely and the unloved; the aged and the little children; and all those who know not the Lord Jesus, or who love him not, or who by sin have grieved his heart of love. Lastly, let us remember before God his pure and lowly Mother, and all those who rejoice with us, but upon another shore and in a greater light, that multitude which no one can number, whose hope was in the Word made flesh, and with whom, in this Lord Jesus, we for evermore are one. These prayers and praises let us humbly offer up to the throne of heaven, in the words which Christ himself hath taught us: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. THE Almighty God bless us with his grace; Christ give us the joys of everlasting life; and unto the fellowship of the citizens above may the King of Angels bring us all. Amen. 2

JESUS IS BORN AT BETHLEHEM AND IS WORSHIPED BY ANGELS AND SHEPHERDS FIFTH LESSON, Read by Richard Obenschain Luke 2:1-20 CAROL How far is it to Bethlehem English traditional melody; arr. David Willcocks How far is it to Bethlehem? Not very far. Shall we find the stableroom lit by a star? Can we see the little child, is he within? If we lift the wooden latch may we go in? May we stroke the creatures there: ox, ass or sheep? May we peep like them and see Jesus asleep? If we touch his tiny hand will he awake? Will he know we ve come so far just for his sake? Great kings have precious gifts, and we have naught, little smiles and little tears are all we brought. For all weary children Mary must weep. Here, on his bed of straw sleep, children, sleep. God in his mother s arms, babes in the byre, sleep, as they sleep who find their heart s desire. THE WISE MEN ARE LED BY THE STAR TO JESUS SIXTH LESSON, Read by Ellen Pentz Matthew 2:1-12 CAROL The Three kings Peter Cornelius ( ) arr. Ivor Atkns Jack Desbois, bass Three kings from Persian lands afar to Jordan follow the pointing star: And this the quest of the travellers three, where the newborn King of the Jews may be. Full royal gifts they bear for the King; gold, incense, myrrh are their offering. The star shines out with a steadfast ray; the kings to Bethlehem make their way, and there in worship they bend the knee, as Mary s child in her lap they see; their royal gifts they show to the King; gold, incense, myrrh are their offering. Thou child of man, lo, to Bethlehem the kings are traveling, travel with them! The star of mercy, the star of grace, shall lead thy heart to its resting place. Gold, incense, myrrh thou canst not bring; offer thy heart to the infant King, offer thy heart! How brightly shines the morning star! With grace and truth from heaven afar our Jesse tree now bloweth. Of Jacob s stem and David s line, for thee, my Bridegroom, King divine, my soul with love overfloweth. Thy word, Jesu, inly feeds us, rightly leads us, life bestowing. Praise, O praise such love overflowing. 4

THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH AND WE HAVE SEEN HIS GLORY SEVENTH LESSON, Read by The Rev. Ed Covert John 1:1-18 CAROL I saw three ships English traditional carol; arr. David Willcocks I saw three ships come sailing in, on Christmas Day in the morning. And what was in those ships all three? On Christmas Day in the morning. Our Savior Christ and his lady, on Christmas Day in the morning. Pray, whither sailed those ships all three? On Christmas Day in the morning. O, they sailed into Bethlehem, on Christmas Day in the morning. And all the bells on earth shall ring, on Christmas Day in the morning. And all the souls on earth shall sing, on Christmas Day in the morning. Then let us all rejoice amain! On Christmas Day in the morning. The people remain standing for the Collect of the Day, then sit for the Offertory Anthem. THE COLLECT OF THE DAY ALMIGHTY God, who hast poured upon us the new light of thine incarnate Word: Grant that the same light, enkindled in our hearts, may shine forth in our lives; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. THE OFFERTORY The people remain seated while the people s monetary gifts are received. The collection taken at this service is divided between the maintenance and mission of Trinity Episcopal Church and the charitable causes we support. We are grateful for your generous giving. OFFERTORY ANTHEM 5 In the bleak midwinter Harold Darke ( ) Jonathan Bolena, soprano In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan. Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone. Snow had fallen snow on snow, snow on snow, in the bleak midwinter long ago. Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him, nor earth sustain, heaven and earth shall flee away, when He comes to reign. In the bleak midwinter, a stable place sufficed the Lord God Almighty Jesus Christ. Enough for Him, whom cherubim, worship night and day, a breast full of milk, and a manger full of hay. Enough for Him, whom angels, fall down before, the ox and ass and camel, which adore. What can I give Him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring

a lamb. If I were a wise man, I would do my part. Yet what I can I give Him, give my heart, give my heart. The people stand to sing the Presentation Hymn. CAROL AT THE PRESENTATION Joy to the world! Antioch Hymnal 100, st. 1 INTERCESSIONS AND THANKSGIVINGS The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. The people kneel. O GOD, the creator and preserver of all mankind, we humbly beseech thee for all sorts and conditions of men; that thou wouldest be pleased to make thy ways known unto them, thy saving health unto all nations. More especially we pray for thy holy Church universal; that it may be so guided and governed by thy good Spirit, that all who profess and call themselves Christians may be led into the way of truth, and hold the faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life. Finally, we commend to thy fatherly goodness all those who are in any ways afflicted or distressed, in mind, body, or estate; especially Dorothy Quick, Erick Roderick, Pat Rollins, Tanner Rosebrook, Ralph Ruedy*, Lila San Angelo, John Shuster*, Bob Small* and Kathleen Tosco*, Dee Schumann*, Jackie Sprouse*, April Temple*, Donna Vazquez, Bobby Wilfong, Joan Wray*, Chip Wright; that it may please thee to comfort and relieve them according to their several necessities, giving them patience under their sufferings, and a happy issue out of all their afflictions. And this we beg for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen. ALMIGHTY God, we remember this day before thee thy faithful servants, Genevieve M. Benton, John W. and Mary E. Colgrove, Margery A. Kocher, Robert W. Townsend, Floyd L. and Minnie S. Brown, Elizabeth Jean Brown, Shannon Smith, Marv Belden, Roland Stetler, Larry Bond; and we pray that, having opened to them the gates of larger life, thou wilt receive them more and more into thy joyful service, that, with all who have faithfully served thee in the past, they may share in the eternal victory of Jesus Christ our Lord; who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. 6

O GOD, our times are in thy hand: Look with favor, we pray, on thy servants, Mandy Bobbitt, Betty Redden, Catharine Carty, Greg Moody, Ruth Ward, Shirley Owens, Tom Bell, Kathy Frazier, Noah Parades-Carpenter, Mary Blair Tankard, and Joie Tankard, as they begin another year. Grant that they may grow in wisdom and grace, and strengthen their trust in thy goodness all the days of their lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. ALMIGHTY God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all men. We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we show forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen. THE CHRISTMAS BLESSING MAY Christ, who by his Incarnation gathered into one things earthly and heavenly, fill you with his joy and peace; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be amongst you and remain with you always. Amen. The people stand to sing the Recessional Hymn. RECESSIONAL HYMN The First Nowell The First Nowell Hymnal 109 THE DISMISSAL The people are sent forth, and respond Thanks be to God.
