1 THE FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY The Holy Eucharist Rite II February 3, :00 am Welcome! We are glad you chose to worship with us today and invite you to participate fully in our service. In the Parish House Children are always welcome in the church for all or part of the service, but should you want to use it, nursery care is available in the Parish House building, around the left side of the church. Restrooms are also in the Parish House. A Children s Corner is available in the back of the church. Visitor s Card Please fill out a visitor s card (found on the hook in your pew) so we can get to know you better. You may hand it to an usher or put it in the offering plate. Flow of Worship We begin our service with the WORD including a SERMON, continue with PRAYERS, and follow with COMMUNION. Words in italics provide directions about when it is customary to stand, sit or kneel. If any of this is physically difficult for you, please remain seated. Bold type indicates words we will speak together. Music not printed in the bulletin is in the blue hymnal. Communion Baptized Christians are welcome to receive communion and ALL are welcome to come forward for a blessing. To receive the bread, hold your hands out together. To receive the wine, help the server by guiding the chalice. If you prefer, you may dip (intinct) the bread in the wine chalice. If you wish to receive a blessing, or only bread, simply place your hands across your chest when the priest or server comes to you. Children are welcome to receive communion at the discretion of their parents. Wherever you are in your faith journey, we welcome you at Trinity. God s grace sustains us as we strive to know, love and serve others in our daily lives. Thank you for worshiping with us.

2 ORGAN VOLUNTARY WELCOME Offertory Florence Price ( ) THE ENTRANCE RITEI The people stand to sing the Processional Hymn, and remain standing through the Collect of the Day. PROCESSIONAL HYMN God the omnipotent! King, who ordainest Russia Hymnal 569 OPENING ACCLAMATION Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. COLLECT FOR PURITY ALMIGHTY God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. SONG OF PRAISE Sung by all The Third Song of Isaiah (Surge, Illuminare) Tone 5 BCP p. 87 2

3 THE COLLECT OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, you govern all things both in heaven and on earth: Mercifully hear the supplications of your people, and in our time grant us your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. THE WORD OF GODI The people are seated for the First Lesson, Psalm, and Second Lesson. THE FIRST LESSON I appointed you a prophet to the nations Jeremiah 1:4-10 The word of the LORD came to me saying, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations." Then I said, "Ah, Lord GOD! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy." But the LORD said to me, "Do not say, 'I am only a boy'; for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the LORD." Then the LORD put out his hand and touched my mouth; and the LORD said to me, "Now I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I appoint you over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant." 3

4 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE GRADUAL PSALM Sung by the choir In te, Domine, speravi Psalm 71:1-6 Setting: John Goss 1 In you, O LORD, have I taken refuge; * let me never be ashamed. 2 In your righteousness, deliver me and set me free; * incline your ear to me and save me. 3 Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe; * you are my crag and my stronghold. 4 Deliver me, my God, from the hand of the wicked, * from the clutches of the evildoer and the oppressor. 5 For you are my hope, O Lord GOD, * my confidence since I was young. 6 I have been sustained by you ever since I was born; from my mother's womb you have been my strength; * my praise shall be always of you. THE SECOND LESSON If I speak without love, I am a noisy gong 1 Corinthians 13:1-13 If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrong doing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The people stand to sing the Sequence Hymn and remain standing for the Gospel. SEQUENCE HYMN Where charity and love prevail Cheshire Hymnal 581 4

5 THE GOSPEL Jesus says a prophet is not accepted in his hometown Luke 4:21-30 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ. In the synagogue at Nazareth, Jesus read from the book of the prophet Isaiah, and began to say, "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, "Is not this Joseph's son?" He said to them, "Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, 'Doctor, cure yourself!' And you will say, 'Do here also in your hometown the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum.'" And he said, "Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet's hometown. But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the land; yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian." When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The people are seated for the Sermon. THE SERMON The people stand for the Nicene Creed and the Prayers of the People. The Rev. Shirley Ruedy THE NICENE CREED Said by all We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 5

The people kneel for the Confession. CONFESSION OF SIN AND ABSOLUTION Confession said by all MOST merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. ALMIGHTY God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The presider offers Absolution, and the people respond Amen. THE PEACE The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. The people greet one another with a sign of God s peace and then are seated. 6

If you take care of yourself both inside and out, this will have a positive impact on how we relate to others in our family, work, and community. Self-care is never a selfish act it is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have, the gift I was put on earth to offer to others. ~Parker Palmer.
