2 THE COLLECT OF THE DAY Merciful God, who sent thy messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. THE FIRST LESSON The return of scattered Israel Baruch 5:1-9 Take off the garment of your sorrow and affliction, O Jerusalem, and put on forever the beauty of the glory from God. Put on the robe of the righteousness that comes from God; put on your head the diadem of the glory of the Everlasting; for God will show your splendor everywhere under heaven. For God will give you evermore the name, "Righteous Peace, Godly Glory." Arise, O Jerusalem, stand upon the height; look toward the east, and see your children gathered from west and east at the word of the Holy One, rejoicing that God has remembered them. For they went out from you on foot, led away by their enemies; but God will bring them back to you, carried in glory, as on a royal throne. For God has ordered that every high mountain and the everlasting hills be made low and the valleys filled up, to make level ground, so that Israel may walk safely in the glory of God. The woods and every fragrant tree have shaded Israel at God's command. For God will lead Israel with joy, in the light of his glory, with the mercy and righteousness that come from him. THE PSALM The Song of Zechariah Luke 1: Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; * he has come to his people and set them free. 69 He has raised up for us a mighty savior, * born of the house of his servant David. 70 Through his holy prophets he promised of old, 76 You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, * for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, 77 To give his people knowledge of salvation * 71 that he would save us from our enemies, * from the hands of all who hate us. by the forgiveness of their sins. 78 In the tender compassion of our God * 72 He promised to show mercy to our fathers * and to remember his holy covenant. the dawn from on high shall break upon us, 79 To shine on those who dwell in darkness and 73 This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham, * the shadow of death, * and to guide our feet into the way of peace. 74 to set us free from the hands of our enemies, Free to worship him without fear, * 75 holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. 2

3 THE SECOND LESSON A harvest of righteousness on the day of Jesus Christ Philippians 1:3-11 I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ. It is right for me to think this way about all of you, because you hold me in your heart, for all of you share in God's grace with me, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the compassion of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you to determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God. THE GOSPEL Prepare the way of the Lord Luke 3:1-6 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip ruler of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruler of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, "The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.'" THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE We pray for those among us who are sick or have other needs. Alex, Ben*, Betsy*, Carol*, Diana, Hugh, Katherine, Kendall, Kevin, Lynn*, Michael, Waverly, Robert Ambler, Lash Barksdale, Marv and Peg Belden*, Kenneth Bond, Betsy Brown, Martin Brown*, Wendy Brown, Libbey Buckley*, Patti Burtner, Davison Chapman, Pat Clark* SENDING FORTH OF THE EUCHARISTIC VISITORS At the conclusion of communion, the Eucharistic Visitors go to the altar rail. We send you out to share Communion this day. May you carry the prayers of all of us as you take this sacrament of Christ s presence. May those who receive it from you be strengthened and encouraged in that community we have together in our Lord Jesus Christ. This year, fifty percent of donations made will be given to Episcopal Migration Ministries (EMM), a refugee resettlement program of The Episcopal Church that welcomes and supports refugees and immigrants, educates communities, and equips advocates. The other fifty percent will be given to Episcopal Relief & Development (ERD), a non-profit organization committed to alleviate hunger, create economic opportunities, respond to disasters, promote health, and strengthen communities. Please consider faithfully how you might support this effort. Checks may be made payable to the Diocese of SWVA and either use the envelopes in your pew or mail directly to the Diocese, 1002 First St., Roanoke, VA or by donate online at It is a charitable love for the neighbor that is honored in St. Nicholas, and this annual appeal allows us to share with others in this season of giving. Many hands make the task lighter For many of our guests this is the only Christmas Celebration they will have. PLEASE NOTE: we will be doing ONE seating at 1:30 p.m. rather than two. Foster Family List for December 16, 2018: Please excuse the delay in getting this information to the children, youth and parents of Trinity. I just received the list and I am relieved to pass it on to you. For several years each Sunday School class has sponsored a Foster child for Christmas in our Staunton area. Below is the list for each class. The thought is that each person will purchase a gift so a child can have gifts to open Christmas Day. (Several families can go in on an item if desired.) Please bring your gifts to your classroom or Muffie Newell s Office in the Parish House by Sunday December 16. That day we will together wrap the gifts and get them ready for distribution! Questions formation@trinitystaunton.org. Godly Play Class: A two year old male: Any toys, books, puzzles, that you think he would enjoy. Please make checks out to Trinity Episcopal Church with "Giving Tree" on the memo line. All funds must be received by Monday, December 10. On December 16, MIRA, an early music ensemble will present their Christmas concert, Behold, Glad Tidings, at 5pm. The concert will include a number of medieval carols, as well as motets by Hassler, Parminger and Gibbons, specifically the verse anthem, Behold, I Bring you Glad Tidings, a gorgeous yet rarely performed Christmas anthem. MIRA will also offer this concert in Charlottesville on Friday, December 14 at 7:30 in the Holy Comforter Catholic Church, and in that performance the Ceremony of Carols will be included. Both concerts will request donations to cover the costs. For more information, please call Other Many thanks to all who donated food, time and talent to making the reception following the Advent Lessons and Carols service such a lovely and enjoyable event. That particular service and reception mean so much not only to our congregation but to our community as well. What a wonderful way to begin this Advent season and to share the love of God. -- Hospitality Committee Vestry Announces Change in Size: At its regular meeting on November 19, the Vestry of Trinity Church approved a policy to set Vestry membership at twelve members elected to three-year terms and one member selected at random for a one-year term. This will reduce the Vestry from its current size of eighteen elected members and one randomly selected member. This policy will take effect with the next Vestry election. To read the full article please see the link on the drop down menu under About Us on our website or request a printed copy in the office. Calling All Altar Guild Members: We will be decorating the Church for Christmas immediately following the 11:00 service on Dec. 23. Please join us (and bring a friend)! End of the year gifts: Please remember that Trinity operates on a cash basis and contributions can only be considered as being given in 2018 if they are received in our office by December 31. For stock transactions, the shares must have been transferred to our brokerage account by the end of the year. We encourage you to take care of your end-of-year giving before the last day of the year! 6
