THE EIGHTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST: The Holy Eucharist Rite II July 15, :00 am Welcome! We are glad you chose to worship with us today and invite you to participate fully in our service. In the Parish House Children are always welcome in the church for all or part of the service, but should you want to use it, nursery care is available in the Parish House building, around the left side of the church. Restrooms are also in the Parish House. A Children s Corner is available in the back of the church. Visitor s Card Please fill out a visitor s card (found on the hook in your pew) so we can get to know you better. You may hand it to an usher or put it in the offering plate. Flow of Worship We begin our service with the WORD including a SERMON, continue with PRAYERS, and follow with COMMUNION. Words in italics provide directions about when it is customary to stand, sit or kneel. If any of this is physically difficult for you, please remain seated. Bold type indicates words we will speak together. Music not printed in the bulletin is in the blue hymnal. Communion Baptized Christians are welcome to receive communion and ALL are welcome to come forward for a blessing. To receive the bread, hold your hands out together. To receive the wine, help the server by guiding the chalice. If you prefer, you may dip (intinct) the bread in the wine chalice. If you wish to receive a blessing, or only bread, simply place your hands across your chest when the priest or server comes to you. Children are welcome to receive communion at the discretion of their parents. Wherever you are in your faith journey, we welcome you at Trinity. God s grace sustains us as we strive to know, love and serve others in our daily lives. Thank you for worshiping with us.

VOLUNTARY Three variations on Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele Jeanne Schaffer ( ) WELCOME THE ENTRANCE RITEI The people stand to sing the Processional Hymn, and remain standing through the Collect of the Day. PROCESSIONAL HYMN Praise to the living God Leoni Hymnal 372 OPENING ACCLAMATION Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. THE COLLECT FOR PURITY ALMIGHTY God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. GLORIA IN EXCELSIS Sung by all Robert Powell Hymnal S 280 2

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. O Lord, mercifully receive the prayers of your people who call upon you, and grant that they may know and understand what things they ought to do, and also may have grace and power faithfully to accomplish them; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. THE WORD OF GODI The people are seated for the First Lesson, Psalm, and Second Lesson. THE FIRST LESSON The sign of the plumb line: God s judgment on Israel Amos 7:7-15 This is what the Lord God showed me: the Lord was standing beside a wall built with a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand. And the LORD said to me, "Amos, what do you see?" And I said, "A plumb line." Then the Lord said, "See, I am setting a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel; I will never again pass them by; the high places of Isaac shall be made desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste, and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword." Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent to King Jeroboam of Israel, saying, "Amos has conspired against you in the very center of the house of Israel; the land is not able to bear all his words. For thus Amos has said, `Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel must go 3

into exile away from his land.'" And Amaziah said to Amos, "O seer, go, flee away to the land of Judah, earn your bread there, and prophesy there; but never again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the king's sanctuary, and it is a temple of the kingdom." Then Amos answered Amaziah, "I am no prophet, nor a prophet's son; but I am a herdsman, and a dresser of sycamore trees, and the LORD took me from following the flock, and the LORD said to me, `Go, prophesy to my people Israel.'" The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE GRADUAL PSALM Sung by all Benedixisti, Domine Psalm 85:8-13 One measure of music is sung for each half verse, changing pitch on the underlined syllable. Chant S , Robert Knox Kennedy 8 I will listen to what the Lord God is saying, * for he is speaking peace to his faithful people and to those who turn their hearts to him. 9 Truly, his salvation is very near to those who fear him, * that his glory may dwell in our land. 10 Mercy and truth have met to / gether; * righteousness and peace have kissed each other. 11 Truth shall spring up from the earth, * and righteousness shall look down from heaven. 12 The Lord will indeed grant pros / perity, * and our land will yield its increase. 13 Righteousness shall go be / fore him, * and peace shall be a pathway for his feet. THE SECOND LESSON Chosen in Christ to live to the praise of God s glory Ephesians 1:3-14 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of 4

the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God's own people, to the praise of his glory. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The people stand to sing the Sequence Hymn and remain standing for the Gospel. SEQUENCE HYMN Come thou fount of every blessing Nettleton Hymnal 686 THE GOSPEL The death of John the Baptist Mark 6:14-29 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, Lord Christ. King Herod heard of the demons cast out and the many who were anointed and cured, for Jesus' name had become known. Some were saying, "John the baptizer has been raised from the dead; and for this reason these powers are at work in him." But others said, "It is Elijah." And others said, "It is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old." But when Herod heard of it, he said, "John, whom I beheaded, has been raised." For Herod himself had sent men who arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, because Herod had married her. For John had been telling Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife." And Herodias had a grudge against him, and wanted to kill him. But she could not, for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he protected him. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed; and yet he liked to listen to him. But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and for the leaders of Galilee. When his daughter Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl, "Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it." And he solemnly swore to her, "Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my kingdom." She went out and said to her mother, "What should I ask for?" She replied, "The head of John the baptizer." Immediately she rushed back to the king and requested, "I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter." The king was deeply grieved; yet out of regard for his oaths and for the guests, he did not want to refuse her. Immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard with orders to bring John's head. He went and beheaded him in the prison, brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl. Then the girl gave it to 5

her mother. When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body, and laid it in a tomb. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The people are seated for the Sermon. THE SERMON The people stand for the Nicene Creed and the Prayers of the People. The Rev. Paul Nancarrow THE NICENE CREED Said by all WE believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE After each intercession: God, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. In the petition for the sick, the people join in naming those with special needs. Preston Mayson*, Dana McClanahan, Amanda McCray and Family, Peter Meyers, Joe Mills, Rosemary Mitchell, Ashley Morgan, Easten*, Nelson*, Rachael*, and Sandra Morgan*, Toni Nelson*, Britten Olinger, Cruz Patino, Kate and Lucy Penny, Clifton W. 7 Final intercession Lifting our voices with all creation, with the Blessed Virgin Mary, and all the saints, let us offer ourselves and one another to the living God through Christ. To you, O Lord. Concluding Collect Almighty and eternal God, ruler of all things in heaven and earth: Mercifully accept the prayers of your people, and strengthen us to do your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The people kneel for the Confession. CONFESSION OF SIN AND ABSOLUTION Confession said by all MOST merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. ALMIGHTY God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. THE PEACE All stand The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. The people greet one another with a sign of God s peace and then are seated. THE HOLY COMMUNIONI THE OFFERTORY The people remain seated while their offerings of bread and wine are brought forward. Offering plates are located at the steps to the chancel, and offerings may be placed there as you come forward to communion. The collection taken at this liturgy is divided between the maintenance and mission of Trinity Episcopal Church and the charitable causes we support. We are grateful for your generous giving. OFFERTORY ANTHEM 7 O Jesus, I have promised Jacques Arcadelt (circa ) arr. Craig Klampe O Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end; be thou forever near me, my Master and my Friend: I shall not fear the battle if thou art by my side nor wander from the pathway if thou wilt be my guide. My foes are ever near me, around me and within. O Jesus, draw thou nearer, my heart and soul to win. O Jesus, thou hast promised to all who follow thee that where thou art in glory there shall thy servant be, Be near me now in suffering within me to extol thy bounty and thy mercy, thou guardian of my soul. O Jesus I have promised to serve thee to the end; Give me the grace to follow, my Master and my Friend.
