1 Guide for Preparing for Holy Mass For Presider, Deacons, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Altar Servers, and Other Ministers at the Service at the Altar Final: March 7, 2017 Saint Catherine of Siena Catholic Church Vallejo, California

2 Disposition and Movements 1. Serve with Humility, Obedience, and Charity. 2. Attention and reverence is towards the altar. 3. Genuflect or bow profoundly when passing before the altar and the tabernacle. 4. Genuflect or bow profoundly when the tabernacle is open. 5. Step forward and bow when approaching Presider or Deacon, and bow before stepping away from Presider or Deacon. 6. Only Presider, Deacon, and Altar Servers remain in Sanctuary during Mass. 7. Hold and carry with reverence all sacred vessels and books; cross, candles and lamps; vestments and cloths; and all objects used in the service of the altar. 8. Perform actions with reverence, in silence, with attention to detail, and slow and deliberate movement, avoiding attention. 9. Altar Servers move in unison in procession, when standing, sitting, or kneeling, and when performing actions. 10. Altar Servers and Sacristan minister to the Presider. 11. Sacristan remains in sacristy. 12. Fold hands in reverence. Perform gestures in common with assembly. Pray and sing in common with assembly. 13. Extraordinary Ministers avoid being seen standing or congregating at the Sanctuary. 14. Dress modestly when serving. 15. Know all sacred vessels and objects and books by name and purpose. 16. Pray before Mass for divine assistance in serving at the altar and after Mass in thanksgiving for having been called to serve. 1

3 Before Mass 1. Altar Servers. Lead Altar Server, Cross Bearer, and Candle Bearers vest with alb, and cincture according to season. 2. Sacristy and Altar. Sacristan unlocks and opens door to sacristy. Get key from Priest, Deacon, or designated staff. Get key from lock box. Sacristan prepares sacred vessels and objects and books. Sacristan removes and folds altar cover. Place altar cover in sacristy on counter. 3. Books and Stands. Word Minister checks that Book of Readings is on book stand on table in front of the ambo. Place Book of the Gospel on acrylic stand on altar. Sacristan places Missal on book stand on side ledge. Book Bearer checks that Missal is on book stand on side ledge. 4. Audio. Word Minister turns on audio, ambo microphone, and altar microphone. Sacristan places hand-held microphone on seat for Deacon, as needed. Handheld microphones kept in vestry. Check battery level and replace battery, as needed. 5. Music. Music Minister posts hymn numbers. Turn on computer and projectors. Deploy projection screens. 6. Lights and Window Shades. Hospitality Minister turns on nave, perimeter, choir, baptistery, altar, sanctuary, ambo, tower lights, and narthex lights. Deploy window shades in narthex, as needed. 2

4 7. Holy Water Fonts. Hospitality Minister checks Holy Water container and fonts. Refill fonts, as needed. 8. Credence Table. Sacristan prepares credence table. Place tray with cups and water cruet. Place water pitcher, wash bowl, and hand towel. Place ablution bowl for Presider. Place chalice with purificator, pall, and large corporal. Place tray with communion ciboria. 9. Side Credence Shelves. Sacristan sets one ablution bowl, one hand sanitizer, and five purificators for each of two side credence shelves by altar steps. One purificator to be used by Extraordinary Ministers of the ciborium after giving Communion. 10. Sacred Vessels. Sacristan sets out first tray. Place eight (8) cups; one chalice with purificator, pall, and large corporal; and water cruet on tray. Use pall according to season or celebration. Set tray on credence table. Set out second tray. Place five (5) small ciboria, without lids, on tray. Set tray on credence table. Set large offertory ciborium with cover on counter. Check consecrated Communion Hosts in tabernacle. Tabernacle key kept in crystal jar in cabinet for vessels. Leave tabernacle key in tabernacle lock. Place enough unconsecrated communion hosts in large offertory ciborium so that the large offertory ciborium and tabernacle ciborium total 750 to 800 hosts. Church capacity is 722. Prepare small ciboria with additional communion hosts, as needed. Place large communion host in large offertory ciborium and place cover. Set wine decanter with cover on counter. Fill wine decanter with one (1) bottle of wine. Place cover on decanter. 3

5 11. Gift Table. Sacristan brings wine decanter and large offertory ciborium to back of church and places on gift table. 12. Ablution and Wash Bowls. Sacristan prepares water pitcher, wash bowl with hand towel. Set on credence table. Sacristan prepares ablution bowl for Presider. Set in tray with ciboria on credence table. Candle Bearers check that water pitcher, wash bowl with hand towel, and ablution bowl for Presider are on credence table. 13. Processional Cross, Lamps, Candles, and Bells. Sacristan checks candle tapers; replace tapers, as needed. Sacristan checks that altar lamps are on stands on both sides of altar. Check lamp oil; refill lamp oil, as needed; wipe off excess lamp oil. Check lamp wick; adjust lamp wick, as needed. Sacristan checks that tabernacle lamps are on stands on both sides of tabernacle. Check lamp paraffin; refill lamp paraffin, as needed; wipe off excess lamp paraffin. Check lamp wick; adjust lamp wick, as needed. Only use special paraffin for tabernacle lamps. Sacristan checks that red tabernacle candle is on stand next to tabernacle. Replace candle, as needed. Sacristan checks that processional candles are on stands. Replace candles, as needed. Candle Bearer lights altar lamps, tabernacle lamps, and processional candles. Cross Bearer checks that processional cross is on stand. Bell Bearer places bells next to seat. 4

6 14. Pyx Tray. Sacristan prepares round metal tray for pyxes, glass container with communion hosts for the sick, tong, and hand sanitizer. Bring to back of church and set on gift table. Sacristan places communion hosts in pyxes. 15. Gospel Book Stand. Word Minister brings acrylic stand for Book of the Gospel to back of church. Place stand on side ledge. Word Minister brings Book of the Gospel from altar to back of church. Place on stand on side ledge. Gives Book of the Gospel to Deacon for processional. During Mass 16. At the Welcome. Cross Bearer takes processional cross to back of church. Carry cross reverently. Do not set on floor or lean against wall. Candle Bearers take processional candles to back of church. Carry candles centered and straight and level to avoid wax from spilling. Outside hand at top of knob. Walk side-by-side in unison. Second Reader gives the welcome. 17. At the Processional. Cross Bearer leads procession, followed by Candle Bearers, Lead Altar Server, Sacristan, First Reader, and Deacon. All precede Presider. Keep uniform distance between ministers. Walk slowly and reverently. 18. At the Altar. All stand at bottom of steps facing altar. Lector stands to left of Deacon. Sacristan stands to right of Presider. Cross Bearer places cross on stand. Candle Bearers place candles on stand. 5

7 Altar Servers stand by seat. All genuflect or bow profoundly with the Presider. All go to seats. Altar Servers take seats in unison. 19. At the Collect. At the Penitential Act or at the Gloria, Book Bearer takes Missal from side ledge. At the Collect, Book Bearer brings Missal to the Presider and bows, turns towards Deacon who opens Missal to proper page, and then turns back to the Presider. After the Collect, Book Bearer bows and returns Missal to book stand and returns to seat. Step forward and bow when approaching Presider or Deacon, and bow before stepping away from Presider or Deacon. 20. At the Liturgy of the Word. First and Second Readers and Cantor walk to the front altar pridella, bow to altar, then proceed to ambo. Reader proclaims first reading. Cantor leads Responsorial Psalm. Reader proclaims second reading. Second reader places Book of Readings on table stand. All return to seats. 21. At the Gospel. At the Acclamation, Deacon brings Book of the Gospel from altar to ambo. Candle Bearers go to their processional candle stands and take candles. Proceed side-by-side to ambo ahead of Deacon. Stand on each side of ambo facing ambo with candles centered and straight and level. After Gospel, return side-by-side to stands, place candles on stands, and return to seats. Move in unison. 22. At the Preparation of Altar. Lead Altar Server brings corporal to altar. Place corporal at center of altar. Remove acrylic stand from altar and bring to sacristy. Deacon prepares corporal. If there is no Deacon, Lead Altar Server prepares corporal. 6

8 Cross Bearer brings chalice with purificator and pall to altar. Place chalice on right side of altar. Return to seat. Book Bearer brings Missal to altar. Place Missal on left side of altar. Lead Altar Server brings tray with eight (8) cups and water cruet to right side of altar. Set cups neatly in two rows on corporal. Set water cruet. Return tray to credence table. Return to seat. Lead Altar Server and Cross Bearer take seats in unison Sacristan prepares ciborium with additional hosts, as needed. Lead Altar Server brings ciborium with additional hosts to altar and places on corporal left side. Sacristan remains in sacristy. Receive sacred vessels and objects and books. 23. At the Offertory Procession. Candle Bearers take processional candles and go to the back of the church. 24. At the Collection and Gifts. Hospitality Ministers take the collection. Place Candle Bearers and parishioners bringing gifts and Hospitality Ministers in line for offertory procession. Book of Petitions and Children s Book of the Gospel are not included in the offertory procession. 25. At the Receiving of Gifts. Deacon and Lead Altar Server precede Presider to front of altar to receive gifts. Deacon stands to right of Presider. Lead Altar Server stands to left of Presider. Candle Bearers each stand next to Deacon and Lead Altar Server. Presider blesses parishioners and Hospitality Ministers bringing gifts. Presider receives wine decanter and hands to the Deacon. Deacon brings wine decanter to altar. Presider receives the offertory ciborium and hands to Lead Altar Server. Lead Altar Server sets offertory ciborium on center of corporal, removes cover, brings cover to sacristy. 7

9 Presider receives the pyx tray and brings pyx tray to altar. If Book of Petitions and Children s Book of the Gospel are brought at the offertory procession, Cross Bearer receives Book of Petitions and Children s Book of the Gospel from Presider and brings to sacristy. 26. At the Preparation of the Wine. Deacon prepares wine for consecration. Prepare chalice and cups. Lead Altar Server removes wine decanter and water cruet. Place water cruet in tray on credence table. Bring wine decanter to sacristy. Return to seat. 27. At the Washing. Candle Bearers bring wash bowl and water pitcher and towel from credence table, and stand beside altar on right side. Step forward and bow to Presider before washing. After Presider washes hands, bow and step away. Return wash bowl and water pitcher and towel to sacristy. Return to seats. 28. At the Consecration. Bell Bearer rings bell at elevation of host. Bell Bearer rings bell at elevation of chalice. Ring bell slowly and distinctly, with three sets of three rings. 29. At the Sign of Peace. Book Bearer takes Missal from altar and sets on stand on side ledge. Lead Altar Serer brings tray with five (5) small ciboria to left side of altar, sets ciboria on altar left side of corporal, and returns tray to credence table. Deacon brings large ciborium from tabernacle to altar, and distributes consecrated Hosts into ciboria. Leave tabernacle ciborium cover on altar. Sacristan and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion sanitize hands completely and properly. Wiping excess sanitizer not necessary. Stand in row at bottom of side altar steps. 8

10 30. At the Lamb of God. Deacon kneels behind altar right side. Sacristan and Extraordinary Ministers stand in row at bottom of side altar steps. All bow profoundly. 31. After Presider Communicates. Sacristan and Extraordinary Ministers climb steps in unison and stand in row at both sides of altar to receive Communion. Altar Servers move together and stand behind altar to receive Communion. After receiving Communion, return to seats and kneel. Move in unison. Presider gives Communion to ministers and altar servers. Deacon distributes cups to ministers. 32. At the Distribution. Only Presider and Deacon take from altar and distribute ciboria and cups to ministers. On left side: Extraordinary Minister 1 with ciborium; 2, 3, 4, 5 with cups; 6 with ciborium. On right side: Extraordinary Minister 1 with ciborium; 2, 3, 4, 5 with cups; 6 with ciborium. On right Side: Sacristan with tabernacle ciborium. 33. At the Communion of the People. Presider and Deacon give Communion at center aisle. Sacristan with tabernacle ciborium and Extraordinary Minister 2 with cup give Communion to choir. On left side: Extraordinary Ministers 1 with ciborium and 2 and 3 with cups at side aisle; 6 with ciborium and 4 and 5 with cups at center aisle. On right side: Extraordinary Ministers 1 with ciborium and 2 and 3 with cups at side aisle; 6 with ciborium and 4 and 5 with cups at center aisle. 9

11 Cross Bearer brings ablution bowl for Presider to altar. Place on corporal on left side. Cross Bearer brings water cruet to altar. Place on corporal on right side. 34. Extraordinary Minister of the Ciborium. Extraordinary Minister holds ciborium in left hand. Use right thumb and forefinger to take Consecrated Host. Raise the Consecrated Host over the ciborium and show Consecrated Host to communicant and say, The Body of Christ. The communicant responds, Amen. Place Consecrated Host in palm of left hand of communicant. Communicant takes the Body of Christ and immediately consumes. If the communicant does not immediately consume the Body of Christ, direct the communicant to do so. Extraordinary Minister may bless those who are unable to receive the Body of Christ by raising their right hand over the parishioner and saying, May God bless you. 35. Extraordinary Minister of the Cup. Extraordinary Minister holds cup with the Blood of Christ in left hand and purificator in right hand. Unfold and open the purificator. Show the cup with the Blood of Christ to communicant and say, The Blood of Christ. The communicant responds, Amen. Place cup in hands of communicant. Communicant drinks from the cup with the Blood of Christ. Take the cup from the communicant and wipe the outside and inside of the lip of the cup with the purificator. Wipe the cup using the entire purificator, as needed. 36. Communion Stations. Sacristan directs Extraordinary Ministers to stations. Distribute additional consecrated hosts from tabernacle ciborium and advise when to break Hosts, as needed. Distribute additional Hosts at altar over corporal. Check with Hospitality Ministers for parishioners who need to receive Communion at their seats. Extraordinary Ministers reposition near stations with parishioners in line to receive Communion. 10

12 After all parishioners have received Communion, Extraordinary Ministers of the cup reverently consume remaining Blood of Christ at the bottom of altar stairs while facing the altar. 37. Ciboria and Wine Cups. Extraordinary Ministers return ciboria and cups to altar. Walk behind altar; do not cross in front of altar. Deacon (or Sacristan) receives ciboria from Extraordinary Ministers. Place remaining consecrated hosts in large tabernacle ciborium, and set empty ciborium on corporal on left side. Extraordinary Ministers of the Ciboria use ablution bowl and purificator after distributing Communion. Do not use hand sanitizer. Deacon (or Sacristan) receives cups from Extraordinary Ministers. Set cups and purificators on corporal on right side. Extraordinary Ministers of the Cup use neither ablution bowl nor hand sanitizer. Deacon returns large ciborium with cover to tabernacle. Sacristan and any Extraordinary Ministers turn towards tabernacle and bow profoundly. Altar Servers kneel. 38. Purification of Vessels. Deacon purifies ciboria and cups and chalice. 39. Trays. Cross Bearer brings tray for ciboria to altar left side, places ciboria and ablution bowl for Presider in tray, brings tray to credence table. Lead Altar Server brings tray for cups to altar right side, places cup, purificators, and water cruet in tray, brings tray to credence table. Cross Bearer brings chalice to credence table. 11

13 40. Distribution of Pyxes. Presider or Deacon distributes pyxes. Lead Altar Server receives and brings pyx tray to sacristy. Return to seat. 41. At Prayer after Communion. After Communion, Book Bearer takes Missal from side ledge. At the Prayer after Communion, Book Bearer brings Missal to the Presider and bows, turns towards Deacon who opens Missal to proper page, and then turns back to the Presider. After the Prayer after Communion, Book Bearer bows and returns Missal to book stand and returns to seat. Step forward and bow when approaching Presider or Deacon, and bow before stepping away from Presider or Deacon. 42. Announcements. First Reader reads announcements. Stand behind ambo. 43. After Dismissal. Cross Bearer takes processional cross and proceeds to bottom of altar pridella. Candle Bearers, without candles, and Lead Altar Server follow. Altar Servers face the altar. Lector and Sacristan proceed to bottom of altar pridella and face the altar. Lector stands on the left and Sacristan stands on the right. Presider and Deacon kiss the altar and proceed to bottom of the altar pridella and face altar. All lay ministers precede Presider. All genuflect or bow profoundly with the Presider. 44. At the Recessional. Altar Servers turn to their left together to face back of church. Move in unison. Cross Bearer leads procession, followed by Candle Bearers, Lead Altar Server, Sacristan, First Reader, and Deacon. All precede Presider. 12

14 Altar Servers remain at back of church. Presider and Deacon venerate cross. Parishioners venerate cross. After assembly leaves, Altar Servers return together to sanctuary. Move in unison. After Mass 45. Books and Stands. Word Minister returns Book of the Gospel to sacristy and places in cabinet for books. Return acrylic book stand to cabinet. Sacristan returns Missal and wooden book stand to sacristy. Place in cabinet for books. Sacristan returns Book of Petition to back of church on side ledge. Sacristan places Children s Book of the Gospel in cabinet for books. Sacristan places trays and stands in cabinet for trays, stands and bells. 46. Audio. Word Minister turns off altar microphone, ambo microphone, and audio. Sacristan returns hand-held microphone to vestry. 47. Lights and Window Shades. Hospitality Minister turns off nave, perimeter, choir, baptistery, altar, sanctuary, ambo, and tower lights. Reset window shades in the narthex, as needed. 48. Side Credence Shelves. Sacristan returns ablution bowls, purificators, and hand sanitizers from side credence shelves to sacristy. 13

15 49. Sacred Vessels. Only Deacon purifies ciboria, cups, and chalice. Sacristan cleans vessels, as needed, and empties water in right sink. Sacristan places chalice, ciboria with covers, and cups in cabinet for vessels. 50. Decanter, Pitcher, and Cruet. Sacristan empties and rinses wine decanter, water pitcher, and water cruet in left sink and place in sink rack to drain. Place in cabinet for decanter, pitcher, cruets and bowls. 51. Ablution and Wash Bowls. Sacristan empties ablution bowls in right sink and cleans. Empty wash bowl in left sink and rinse. Dry bowls with towel. Place in cabinet for decanter, pitcher, cruets and bowls. Place towel in plastic bin for proper washing. 52. Right Sink. Sacristan wipes right sink with towel. Place towel in plastic bin for proper washing. 53. Purificators and Towels. Sacristan places used purificators and towels in plastic bin for proper washing. 54. Sacrarium. Sacristan empties water used to purify and clean sacred vessels collected in basin underneath right sink directly into garden. Return basin to cabinet underneath right sink. 55. Processional Cross, Lamps, Candles, and Bells. Cross Bearer places processional cross on stand. Candle Bearers extinguish altar lamps, tabernacle lamps, and processional candles. Bell Bearer returns bells to cabinet. 14

16 56. Altar Servers. Return albs and cinctures to vesting room. Properly place albs and cinctures on hangers. Return crosses. Sign attendance sheet. Turn off vesting room light. 57. Pyx Tray. Sacristan returns glass container with communion hosts for the sick, tong, and hand sanitizer from gift table at back of church to sacristy. Sacristan places pyx tray in cabinet for trays, container and tong in cabinet for hosts, and hand sanitizer in cabinet next to sink. 58. Gospel Book Stand. Sacristan returns acrylic stand for Gospel Book from back of church to sacristy. Place on counter. 59. Tabernacle Key. Sacristan locks tabernacle and returns tabernacle key to sacristy. Place in crystal jar in cabinet for vessels. 60. Altar. Sacristan places altar cover on altar. 61. Close Sacristy. Sacristan turns off sacristy light. Close and lock sacristy door. Return key to lock box. 62. Collection. Hospitality Ministers places collection bag in safe in audio room. Close and lock audio room door. 63. Front, Altar, and Side Doors. Sacristan checks and closes doors leading from sanctuary to rear patio. Hospitality Ministers check and close front and side doors. 15

17 If the Precious Blood is Spilled. 64. If the Precious Blood is spilled: Eucharistic Minister guards location where Precious Blood was spilled. Sacristan places purificator on floor or carpet to absorb Precious Blood. Pour some water on floor and carpet, and then absorb with purificator. Repeat as needed. Place purificators in plastic bin for proper washing. If the Body of Christ is Dropped 65. If the Precious Blood is spilled: Eucharistic Minister picks up Consecrated Host from floor. Reverently consume the Consecrated Host. If a Community Link Minister requests Communion Host for the sick 66. If a Community Link Minister requests Communion Host for the sick Presider or Deacon distributes Communion to Community Link Minister. Place in proper pyx. Sacristan receives extraordinary permission or instruction to distribute Communion Host from tabernacle to Community Link Minister only. Place in proper pyx. 16
