1 Blue Ridge Trinity Lutheran Church 5757 Blue Ridge Blvd., Raytown, MO (816) Fax (816) Trinity Tidings From the Pastor s Desk Dear Saints, Greetings in the name of our crucified, risen and ascended Lord and coming Savior Jesus Christ! Soon we will be observing Lent. On Ash Wednesday, February 14, which is also Valentine s Day (ponder that for a moment), we will begin our Lenten journey to Easter. For the next forty days, we will meditate, pray, and intentionally observe penitential practices as we have done in the past. This transition or addition to our daily life is more than tradition. It allows us to enter the Easter story, not to observe it as bystanders. For it to be spiritually beneficial, I invite you to become deeply absorbed in the Word and grasp its meaning for your life, that of our faith community and the world. This year, our theme will be: A Passion for the Prodigals. You will find it helpful to read again and again chapter 15 of Luke s Gospel. Consider making it a part of your daily devotion. Dwell in it. You can read all of it or a part of it as a daily prayer. You could commit it to memory and then recite it to a friend, an acquaintance or neighbor. Be creative and allow the Spirit to guide you in the Word. Also, consider where are you in the story? Who do you readily identify with? What makes an individual a Prodigal? Who are the Prodigals in your life? Who are the Prodigals in our world? Are Prodigals redeemable? If redeemable, what would it take to redeem a Prodigal? For Holy Week and Easter Day, we will transition to the theme: Sense-ational Savior. As we gather for worship on the four days Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter, each of you will be invited to use your five senses to encounter the reality of God s incarnation the humanity of Christ. Hopefully, this experience will help make the historical event of Jesus Passion and Resurrection personal. Everyone treats Colin as an invalid who will become a hunchback like his father, and Colin in turn has become selfish and demanding. He and Mary strike up an unlikely friendship that sets them both, unexpectedly, on a path to life and health through the springtime restoration of a secret garden. Perhaps, this book will make you want to turn the soil and sing the Doxology as winter gives up its hold on creation. Los Angeles Times book review called it a lusty, bawdy, teeming, festooning, dancing marvel of a book, which alone should make you want to pick it up by stealth or boldly for Brendan wrestles daily with the visceral reality of the Apostle Paul s confession, For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do this I keep on doing (Rom. 7:19). You will love Brendan fiercely as you sense God loves you. Twice-told Tales by Nathaniel Hawthorne Hawthorne is often referred to as America s first great Christian writer. In this early collection of short stories, we encounter an 18thcentury writer who seeks to locate the power of evil in the human heart, in opposition to an age that wanted either to deny evil or locate it only within human institutions. Appropriate for our own age as well as Lent. For instance, the Reverend Hooper in The Minister s Black Veil, unnerves his congregation by wearing a dark veil over his face, without explanation, till the day he dies. Like the veil like the gray cross on some of our foreheads on Ash Wednesday Lent both proclaims the sinfulness of our hearts and forces us to reckon with it before God, alone. Thank you elves for removing the decorations so we can set up for this part of the year. I am working with all scouting programs. They seem to be going strong although the girls scouts are still a small group. January 13th, I helped with the MLM breakfast at the Kansas location. It was well attended by our church, so well, that I was able to visit with clients. One of them helped me to get the most from combining the syrup bottles. It is true, I can learn; often I just do not want to. The church is working on updating the birthday list. I have the current list, so please see me if you have not seen your name listed. This month is Heart month. Once again you will see Go Red for Women, etc. March is Poison Prevention Month. It also will be coming up on Daylight Savings time, so please check those smoke detectors. During the times we had to cancel service, I attended St. Bernadettes' with a friend. Their priest is also doing double duty with Our Lady of Lourdes. Lent is a time of repentance, fasting, and preparation for the coming of Easter. It is a time of self - examination and reflection. What to do or give up for Lent? Here are some ideas: Use a Lenten Devotional Booklet for daily reflection Don t buy anything you don t need 40 Days of decluttering- donate items you don t need Speak well of others Give up soda, alcohol, sweets, smoking etc. NO fast foods for 40 days Practice 40 acts of kindness Replace 30 minutes of TV time with 30 minutes of prayer or Bible reading
