1 October 2016 Volume XXX I No. 10 Good Tidings St. Timothy s Episcopal Church On the beautiful South Coast of Oregon Dear St. Timothy s Church Family and Friends We have been experiencing a bountiful harvest of lettuce from our community garden the last few weeks. We owe a great deal of thanks to our gardeners, Steve and Richard. These two men have been regulars at our community kitchen lunches since we started serving meals. They view working in the garden as a way for them to contribute to the feeding ministries at St. Timothy s. Paige & Rev. Bernie Lindley Steve started clearing and planting the garden this spring. Discovering that the job was a bit overwhelming, he recruited our friend Richard for help. Between the two of them, they have opened up a lot more of our land, clearing out a large amount of brush and berry bushes. For the first time, we can walk all the way over to our far property line on the western side that is farthest away from the church. We have had several salads served at our Tuesday and Saturday soup kitchens that included lettuce from our community garden. On a recent What s Inside? It was Brenda s turn to prepare the Saturday noontime meal. Brenda and Marlene alternate Saturdays. I heard Steve say that he would bring some lettuce into the kitchen the next day (Thursday) for Brenda s Saturday lunch. Brenda said that she would rather the lettuce was harvested Saturday morning so that it would be extra crisp. OK, I heard Steve reply, Then I ll get Richard to do that for you Saturday. I asked Richard the next day how he felt about Steve passing the buck to him.

2 I m glad, Richard told me smiling, that way I ll know for sure that there won t be any slugs left on the leaves because I ll be the one that washed the lettuce. I encourage everyone to walk up the little path at the bottom of the side parking lot and take a peak at what is happening in the garden. There is a little bench over there just past the greenhouse. I sit there sometimes and admire the garden. That might be where I am when you can t find me during my office hours. --bernie+ Prayer of Thanksgiving We praise you, O God, with gladness and humility for all the joys of life, for health and strength, for the love of friends, for work to do and play to recreate us. We thank you for the adventure of life. Above all, we thank you for your gift of Jesus Christ our Lord, for the blessings that have come to us through his body the church. Help us to show our thankfulness, not only with our lips, but in our lives, always endeavoring to do what shall please you. Amen. From: Prayers for All Occasions St. Elizabeth s Guild Community Christmas Bazaar - Saturday, Nov. 12, 9 am to 5 pm. It's getting close once again to shortbread cookie time. The ladies (men are welcome also) will be baking our famous Scottish Shortbread Cookies on October 29, 9 am. We could use all the help we can get. We will be needing donations of our ingredients, so keep an eye on the sign up sheets in the narthex. Our shortbread cookies have become a great Bazaar tradition that buyers look for, as well as baked goods and divinity. Other handmade items for sale would be greatly appreciated. 2

3 Greeters/Ushers, Oblation Bearers, and Lectors What is your gift? Are you looking to enhance your church experience? St. Timothy s has several positions available within the church. Please contact the office or Rev. Bernie if you are interested in more information. Training is available. Greeters/Ushers - Face of the church, friendly, hospitable, cordial person to greet people with a smile and a handshake while handing out bulletins and answering questions. Making people feel welcome and important. Also pass the collection plate. Lectors - Proclaim the Word with thoughtful reflection as it takes meaning in our contemporary lives. Oblation Bearers - Present the gifts of bread and wine for the sacrament of communion. Lay Reader - Trained & licensed to lead worship in a pastoral context. Administers the wine with sub-deacon at the communion rail. Sub-Deacon - Carry book for the Gospel, prepares the gifts of bread and wine at the altar, rings the bells at the appropriate times & administers wine at the communion rail. Altar Guild - Prepare the Sanctuary for worship, maintaining and caring for the sacred vessels, altar linens, and vestments during the liturgical year. Thank you for all the hard work during the St. Elizabeth s Rummage Sale on Sept Over $1600 was raised. Well done! 3

4 St. Timothy s Choir rehearsal Every 11 am. If you are interested in joining the Choir please contact John Arrijuria - our organist/choir Director. St. Elizabeth's Guild Meeting on Sunday, October 11:30 in the Old Parish Hall. Help yourselves to coffee and snacks at coffee hour and bring them into the meeting. All women of the church are invited. Blessing of the Animals - Tuesday, October 4, 11:00 am, in the St. Francis Garden. Bring your family pets, or stuffed animals, to be blessed by Rev. Bernie. All animals must be on a leash or in an animal carrier. There will be a gathering of UTO Boxes on Sundays, October 2 & 9. If you haven t picked up a box yet, you will find them in the rack by the front door. St. Timothy s Vestry Meeting, Monday, October 17, 5 pm in Bernie s Office. The Vestry is the governing board of St. Timothy s. If you have something you would like addressed please contact one of the board members as listed on page 6 of this newsletter. Don t forget to bring food for the food bank collection the 3rd Sunday of the month. We are always in need of Men s socks. We could also use Men s pants/jeans, T-shirts, underwear/men & Women, sweatshirts, jackets etc. Please bring clean items to the church office. Or call

It is a vital part of St. Timothy s. Please help us to continue our ministries.. Immediate Needs: Flour, shelf stable milk, Canned proteins (chili, soup, canned meats) Always needed: Cereal, Canned fruits/vegetables/meat products including fish, Sugar, Jam/ Jelly, Pastas Any food donation will be accepted. St. Timothy s will begin collecting food on each third Sunday of the month. Please bring to the church so we can bless the food before it is taken to the food bank.
