2 IN OUR PARISH SPIRITUAL THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME S imon and Andrew, James and John were working when Jesus called them. They immediately put down their nets and followed Jesus. Can you imagine? The disciples walked away from their previous way of life and toward another, in which Jesus and his way take precedence. They put aside anything that would stand between themselves and the life of discipleship. Jonah acted similarly--he perceived the Lord's call and responded without question. He literally walked a different path, toward Nineveh. No doubt, Saint Paul's own dramatic conversion was in his mind as he wrote to the community in Corinth. The path of discipleship is about holy perspective. Do not let anything stand between you and Christ. QUESTION OF THE WEEK What part of your life is Jesus calling you to change right now? STEWARDSHIP BY THE BOOK There is a certain urgency in today s Gospel as Jesus calls His first disciples Andrew and Simon, James and John. Each one follows Jesus immediately, unhesitatingly abandoning nets and boats and father and fellowworkers. To what is Jesus calling me at this moment, in these circumstances? What will I need to abandon in order to follow Him? READINGS FOR NEXT WEEK FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 1ST READING Deuteronomy 18:15-20 PSALM Psalm 95 2ND READING 1 Corinthians 7:32-35 GOSPEL Mark 1:21-28 EUCHARISTIC ADORATION All are invited to contemplate, to adore, and to pray to Jesus Christ before the Blessed Sacrament every first Friday of the month. Hours of exposition are from to 8:00 p.m. Adoration is a sign of devotion to and worship of Jesus Christ who is fully present to us in the consecrated host. Please sign-up on-line. As the Lord said to Peter the night before his Crucifixion: Could you not watch with me one hour? (Matthew 26:40) A NEW WAY, A NEW WORLD When the people of Nineveh repented, they showed it by wearing sackcloth and fasting from food. Sometimes we might think that way: That repenting means punishing ourselves or feeling sorry. Jesus sees things differently. He preached repentance that was a change of heart, a new way of looking at things, a new way of acting. In the gospel today, we see an example. The first people he calls to be disciples were fisherman. They would have considered their family, their partners, and their boat as the most important things in their lives. You need all of them to be a successful fisherman. Yet the disciples don't even hesitate when called by Jesus. They leave behind their boats, their nets, even their father, to follow Jesus. They don't worry about what they will do, or look back at what they are leaving behind. Now they are fishers of men. Their "repentance" was more than just giving up sins. They were beginning a new life and a new way of looking at the world. Saint Paul refers to this as a new world. When he talks about not using the world fully, he means not fully engaged in the world, but looking to a better one, where God is more important than any passing pleasure or pain. Is your marriage an example of God's love for your friends and relatives? When you are rejoicing, do you give thanks to God? When you are shopping, do you buy what you really need, or what you think will make you happy? Jesus calls us all to this new way of living. With Jesus, we can make a new world. PLEASE PRAY FOR... Please go to weshareonline.org to or contact Mary Rock in the Parish Office at (650) , ext. 225 or for more information or if you need assistance. HOMEBOUND EUCHARISTIC MINISTRY Peace and Blessings for a fresh year to respond to the whisper of the Holy Spirit to open your heart to service. The Eucharistic Ministry to the Homebound welcomes your participation to visit the sick both short term and long term. We respond to requests for Communion service and give you a parishioner request closest to your residence. You set a mutually convenient time to bring Communion. The recipient would be most grateful for your service. Christ, the Divine Healer, is knocking on your door. If you have just returned from the hospital, if you have not been well, or if you have not been to church for a while, Jesus in the Eucharist, is just a phone call away. For more information on how to give Communion to our parishioners in need of the Eucharist at their homes, please contact our Homebound Eucharistic Ministry Coordinator, Theresa Chenlouie, at (415) DAYS FOR LIFE Please join 40 Days for Life a prayer vigil at Planned Parenthood during Lent, from Ash Wednesday to Palm Sunday. Call or Patrick Dewey at (415) or pdewey09@gmail.com for information. WINTER FLU SEASON ADVISORY To protect the health of our parish community, for the time being we will suspend offering the Blood of Christ from the communal chalice. If you are feeling ill or think you may have been exposed to a virus, you should refrain from offering your hand to others at the sign of peace. Likewise if you are not comfortable sharing the sign of peace, you should feel no pressure to do so. All of us must expect that some will refrain from the sign of peace out of care for our wellbeing and not out of unkindness or a lack of piety. Please be aware that the obligation to attend Sunday Mass does not apply to those who are ill, especially those who suffer from contagious disease. It is a sign of consideration for others that those with flu-like symptoms remain at home. For the convenience of those who are homebound, or unable to attend Mass because of illness or infirmity, Mass is broadcast each Sunday morning at 6:00 a.m. on Channels 8, 20 (Comcast), and KTSF 26.
