2 IN OUR PARISH TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME O ne can always be amazed by the prophets and the wisdom books of the Old Testament. A hundred years or so before Christ, the Book of Wisdom points to the kind of teachings a just person such as Jesus would produce and the death that would result at the hands of the wicked. "Let us beset the just one, because he is obnoxious to us" and "Let us condemn him to a shameful death; for according to his own words, God will take care of him." When we are feeling set upon, we can cry out with Psalm 54, "O God, by your name save me, and by your might defend my cause." With Jesus, we often suffer from the contempt of others, and here we have assurance of God's help in our need. "Behold, God is my helper; the Lord sustains my life." When the situation in our country and the world seems difficult or even hopeless, we cry out to God for help and salvation for ourselves, for others in need, and for the Earth itself. QUESTION OF THE WEEK What proof is there in the world that people don t accept Jesus teaching on power and ambition? STEWARDSHIP BY THE BOOK Today s second reading warns that a heart consumed with avarice and envy leads to jealousy, strife, conflicts, and disputes. A giving heart, in contrast, can sing instead with the psalmist, Freely will I offer you sacrifice; I will praise your name, O Lord, for its goodness. READINGS FOR NEXT WEEK TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 1ST READING Numbers 11:25-29 PSALM Psalm 19 2ND READING James 5:1-6 GOSPEL Mark 9:38-43, 45, EUCHARISTIC ADORATION All are invited to contemplate, to adore, and to pray to Jesus Christ before the Blessed Sacrament every first Friday of the month. Hours of exposition are from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Please sign-up on-line. Adoration is a sign of devotion to and worship of Jesus Christ who is fully present to us in the consecrated host. WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY? St. James message of peace is as true now as it was two thousand years ago. Where else do wars and terrorism come from, than people holding on to wealth, power, or hatred? But the message James shares, and that of Jesus in the gospel, is a simple call to be different. Neither of them condemns anyone. They call us to look at what we really want and what truly brings happiness. Jesus' disciples argued about who was greatest. Instead of slapping them down for their selfish pride, he looks at what they could be and calls them to a different attitude. To be truly happy, they must let go of pride and arrogance; they must learn that serving others is the only way to experience love and joy. We are no different today. We have to learn that having the latest gadget, the most expensive cell-phone, or the latest-model car are at best temporary delights. And that being admired by acquaintances is never as lasting as loving someone for themselves. Jesus offers even more: the joy of being loved by God and helping others to know Him. Think about Jesus' words to the disciples: He is the Son of God, yet he wants to lead us not just to himself, but to the Father. Can we learn to be more excited about what God has done for us than what we did to improve our home? Can we share our faith in God's mercy instead of bragging about our golf or bowling scores? Are we more interested in impressing members of the opposite sex, or treating all people with respect? St. James ends our second reading with a challenging statement: He says we ask but don't receive because we ask wrongly. How often do we desire things that won't really make us happy? Do we pray for things we don't really need? Would we ask God to punish those who hurt us, or to help us forgive them? Let us ask God to show us his love and to help those around us to experience it too. PLEASE PRAY FOR... Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. Let us come to honor and pray with our Blessed Lady: for ourselves, for the Church; for the victims of abuse; and for reparation and our spiritual renewal in the Church that we may persevere through these times of testing. As many of you already know, Archbishop Cordileone has asked us the faithful of the archdiocese-- to come together for one day to make an act of faith and spiritual offering for the intentions herein mentioned. We know that we regularly do this at mass, and rightly so, but this devotion to our Lady in the Most Holy Rosary is a powerful spiritual tool in our arsenal. It is a devotion not exclusively on Mary but one that brings our focus on the contemplation of the mysteries of Christ in the Gospel. I strongly urge all parishioners, the leaders and members of the various ministries to participate in this very important event. Let me thank in advance Maria Spremich and our morning ladies who are organizing this one hour event. May God bless them and all of us for this offering. Please save the date, time and place: October 6, 2018, 2:00 p.m. at St. Bartholomew Church.
