2 IN OUR PARISH SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME I magine waking up one day to find a sore or scab and knowing that your life could be forever changed! From the time of Moses, those who were found with persistent skin diseases (known at the time as leprosy) were separated from the community, isolated from family and friends, judged by others and kept apart. What faith the man in today's Gospel must have had to approach Jesus! He not only put his physical life in Jesus' hands, he trusted that the Lord would look at him with mercy rather than judgment, that Jesus would see him rather than his disease. Jesus looks on us with mercy as well, and waits for us to cry out, "If you wish, you can make me clean." The man is a model of faith, and of the witness of one who cannot help but declare the power of God. He acted as Saint Paul urged the community in Corinth to do, giving glory to God through his actions. QUESTION OF THE WEEK Would you have the courage to tell others to do as you do in order to be Christian? STEWARDSHIP BY THE BOOK In today s second reading, St. Paul urges the Corinthians to do all for the glory of God. If we follow that advice in everything we do, we cannot help but be good stewards! READINGS FOR NEXT WEEK FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT 1ST READING Genesis 9:8-15 PSALM Psalm 25 2ND READING 1 Peter 3:18-22 GOSPEL Mark 1:12-15 EUCHARISTIC ADORATION All are invited to contemplate, to adore, and to pray to Jesus Christ before the Blessed Sacrament every first Friday of the month. Hours of exposition are from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Adoration is a sign of devotion to and worship of Jesus Christ who is fully present to us in the consecrated host. Please sign -up on-line. As the Lord said to Peter the night before his Crucifixion: Could you not watch with me one hour? (Matthew 26:40) PAUL THE PEOPLE PLEASER? Last week we heard St. Paul saying that he was all things to all people. This week, we hear that he tried to please everyone. To modern ears, that sounds more like a used car salesman, who has just the right deal for any buyer. But that wasn't what Paul meant. The key to Paul's way of life is the last line of the second reading: "Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ." (1 Cor 11:1) Remember when Paul was still Saul, the Jew who persecuted Christians? When he was struck by lightning he heard, not thunder, but the voice of Jesus, who asked why Saul was persecuting him. Paul later began to understand that all Christians make up the body of Christ. As members of that body, we can show others what Jesus is like, by our example. That seems to be a two part process. First, to show Christ, we have to know Christ. We can do that by reading the scriptures and praying with them. We can receive the sacraments regularly, especially Reconciliation, where we experience his forgiveness and love, and the Eucharist, where Jesus unites himself with us, so that we can become more like him. The second part is acting like Jesus. If we want people to see Christ in us, we don't dress like him, or grow a beard. We have to do things as Jesus would: Forgive people who hurt us, care for the sick, the dying, the poor. Don't be afraid to tell people what God has done for you; encourage others to be grateful for what God has done for them. Pray with people who have difficulty talking to God. Paul obviously didn't please everyone, or he wouldn't have ended his life in prison. He was more interested in pleasing God by spreading the Good News of Jesus' resurrection. If we can imitate Paul in that way, we can't go wrong. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. PLEASE PRAY FOR... WINTER FLU SEASON ADVISORY To protect the health of our parish community, for the time being we will suspend offering the Blood of Christ from the communal chalice. If you are feeling ill or think you may have been exposed to a virus, you should refrain from offering your hand to others at the sign of peace. Likewise if you are not comfortable sharing the sign of peace, you should feel no pressure to do so. All of us must expect that some will refrain from the sign of peace out of care for our wellbeing and not out of unkindness or a lack of piety. Please be aware that the obligation to attend Sunday Mass does not apply to those who are ill, especially those who suffer from contagious disease. It is a sign of consideration for others that those with flu-like symptoms remain at home. For the convenience of those who are homebound, or unable to attend Mass because of illness or infirmity, Mass is broadcast each Sunday morning at 6:00 a.m. on Channels 8, 20 (Comcast), and KTSF 26. ST. BARTS GRIEF SUPPORT The next Grief Support meeting will be in the Spiritual Center on February 22 at 6:30 p.m. SOCIAL MEDIA CHANNELS Did you know that St. Barts has presence on social media?
