5 Hebrews 5:5-10 Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, "You are my Son, today I have begotten you"; as he says also in another place, "You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek." In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. We will use as a Procession for the today the Kyrie Pantokrator set to a Simplified Anglican Chant. Please see the insert for this processional setting. As has been mentioned previously, during the season of lent we will not sing or say the word Alleluia, nor will we sing the Gloria in Excelsis. We will use familiar settings of the Kyrie, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei by Franz Schubert. Today s Organ Prelude is a transcription for organ of an orchestral piece by English composer, H. Walford Davies ( ). Most of Davies' compositions were religious in flavor, and include the oratorio Everyman, works for orchestra, choir and soloists, and a large number of services and anthems. He also wrote a setting of the Christmas carol "O Little Town of Bethlehem", a well-known choral arrangement of "The Holly and the Ivy" and the Solemn Melody. The Offering Anthem is by Richard Farrant (d.1580), organist of St. George s Chapel, Windsor. He wrote several short anthems, including Hide not Thou Thy face, which are among the most beautiful examples of their kind in the entire range of English church music. The Communion Anthem, Ave Verum Corpus, K. 618, was composed by Mozart while in the middle of writing his opera Die Zauberflöte, and while visiting his wife Constanze, who was pregnant with their sixth child and staying in a spa near Baden. [2] It was less than six months before Mozart's death. The motet foreshadows "aspects of the Requiem such as declamatory gesture, textures, and integration of forward- and backward-looking stylistic elements." The Organ Postlude is a fairly large Chorale Prelude marked pro organo pleano (for full organ) by Johann Ludwig Krebs ( ) with well developed fugal figurations on the manual over the chorale melody played on the pedals. Krebs, was a student of J. S. Bach and was considered the finest organist of his time next to Bach himself. 7

8 FRIENDS OF MUSIC: In an effort to bring the church s budget back to non-deficit condition, a number of 2012 budget line items were reduced drastically. One of these items in the music budget was the line item which covers special guest musicians for special services. But the Vestry has given the go-ahead for a special music fund to cover sush disbursements. If you are one of those who appreciates a brass quartet for the Easter liturgy and/or a string trio for a special Missa Brevis in June, and if you are able, you are invited to contribute to a special, non-budgeted fund to support those ventures. A trumpet player s (or French Horn or Trombone) fee for a rehearsal and Easter service is $200. So is a violinist (or cellist) for a June Missa. Please speak to Bill Clisham for details about how you can assist. These contributions should be made ASAP and ear-marked Music Fund, so that funds are available in time for Easter Day. PALM SUNDAY: Next Sunday, April 1, will be Palm Sunday. Weather permitting, we will gather in the parish House for the Blessing of the Palms, and then will process, waving palms, accompanied by bagpipe (Thank you in advance to David Willis) to the main church, where we will first pray and then enter the church singing heartily, All Glory Laud and Honor! JUNIOR CHORISTERS: The Junior choristers will not rehearse after today s liturgy, nor will we rehearse next Sunday (Palm Sunday) or the following Sunday (Easter Day). Rehearsals will resume the Second Sunday of Easter, April 15. SPECIAL CHOIR REHEARSAL: following today s liturgy, the choir will have a special rehearsal to prepare music for Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Saturday Great Vigil, and Easter Day. If you would like your child to receive communion instruction, we have some instructional materials for family use. First Communion will be on Easter Sunday. It is traditional to hold classes to prepare both adults and teens for confirmation and to provide a forum for persons interested in what the Episcopal Church believes and teaches. If you are questioning, seeking, interested in joining, or ready to make an affirmation of faith. Classes will begin in May. Rosie is recovering and enjoying her sister Cheryl s cooking. There will be visits from the Home Health Nurse and Physical Therapy person not to mention doctors appointments over the next few weeks. Thank you for your prayers, cards, and concern with God s help she ll be out and about after Easter Altar Flowers Thank you to everyone who is currently participating in St. John s tradition of requesting flowers in memory of loved ones or in thanksgiving for a special occasion. There are still several Sundays open in

All donations are needed and much appreciated. On Easter Sunday, after the Easter Egg Hunt, there will be a Holy Communion Pot Luck. Laurie Bailey and Celeste Willis will provide the main dishes. Potluck dishes from the congregation are much appreciated and there is a sign-up sheet in the Parish Hall. Everyone is asked to come and share in the food and fellowship.
