We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified of God that he raised Christ--whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised. If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have died in Christ have perished. If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. 7 It has long been the custom at St. John s Church for the congregation to be seated and listen to the Organ Postlude. Please do not feel compelled to do so; but if you prefer to leave immediately after the candles are extinguished, please depart quietly so those who wish to do so may listen prayerfully to the Postlude. The Altar flowers today are given by the Buck Family to the glory of God and in loving remembrance of their Father, Father-in-Law, Grandfather, and Great-Grandfather, Charles Mowers, Sr. The Salem Ministerium Cycle of Prayer: Today we pray for the First Presbyterian Church of Salem. Announcements Music in today s liturgy: Today is the Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany. As is the norm at St. John s Church, all the music is selected to coordinate with the themes of the prayers and lessons appointed for this day. The Choir chants Psalm 1 in a setting by Gerre Hancock ( ), an American composer, improviser, organist and master of the choristers (St. Thomas Church, NYC) and teacher (University of Texas, Austin). The Choir s Offertory Anthem is an accompanied motet by Johannes Brahms ( ), one of the most important German Romantic Composers, and one of the three B s along with Bach and Beethoven. This setting of a text by Paul Flemming ( ), a German Physician and Poet, speaks the same musical and spiritual language as his famous German Requiem. It is not so much a reflection of the Gospel lesson as a response to it. The Communion Chorale is a chorale setting by Johann Sebastian Bach paired with a text translated from St. Thomas Aquinas ( ). The Organ Prelude consists of two introspective settings of O World, I Now Must Leave Thee, also by Johannes Brahms, from a set of eleven chorale preludes published posthumously. The Organ Postlude is the brief fughetta (little fugue) based on our final hymn. It is by American composer, Richard Wienhorst ( ), who spent most of his professional career as a Professor of Music at Valparaiso University. Food Pantry: The Food Pantry distribution day is now only on Tuesday from noon to 2:00 p.m. This decision was made after some careful research which noted that there are a number of other pantry sites within Salem City which cover all the days of the week with the exception of Tuesday. There are copies of the distribution sites on the hall counter in the Parish House. Please note that we continue to need volunteers and contributions. We served 66 people this week. Volunteers for February are: 2/5 Laurie Bailey, 2/12 Sue Harker, 2/19 Ron Magill, 2/26 Bonnie and Rick Holmstrom. Dear Friends of Music Around the County, Save the date Sunday, March 3, 2019, at 3:00 p.m. The wonderful Symphony in C will perform music of Mozart, Beethoven and Mendelssohn at Salem Community College s Davidow Theatre. This is a young, up and coming orchestra and this concert represents the first time a full symphonic orchestra has come to Salem County in many years. What a way to celebrate the 10 th 7

Owen for Music Around the County Mark your Calendars Hamilton: A Lenten Reflection, Friday, March 15, 7-9 p.m. This study, led by Courtenay Reece, features selections from Hamilton the Musical which are used with prayers and readings to spark discussion about Lenten themes of sin, reconciliation and forgiveness. Due to the adult themes, supervised activities will be planned for those under 18. Light refreshments will be served. Please use the signup sheet in the Parish Hall for planning purposes.
