It has long been the custom at St. John s Church for the congregation to be seated and listen to the Organ Postlude. Please do not feel compelled to do so; but if you prefer to leave immediately after the candles are extinguished, please depart quietly so those who wish to do so may listen prayerfully to the Postlude. ANNOUNCEMENTS Music in today s liturgy: Today is the Fourth Sunday in the great 50 days of Easter. It is sometimes called Good Shepherd Sunday for obvious reasons. As is our wont, all the music selected for this liturgy is intended to amplify and reflect the themes of the lessons and prayers for the day. The Choir sings Psalm 23 to an Anglican chant by Edward Bairstow ( ), a rather curmudgeonly English organist (York Minster) and composer in the Anglican Church tradition. The Anthem, The Lord Is my Shepherd, is a setting of the King James version of Psalm 23 by Thomas Matthews ( ), an American organist (He was organist at St. Martin-in-the-Field, Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia early in his career) and composer of many anthems and much organ music. This is his best known Anthem composition. The Communion Anthem, The Lord Is Now My Shepherd True, is yet another setting of Psalm 23. This one is a metrical setting from the Becker Psalter (1628) composed by Heinrich Schütz ( ), a German composer and organist, generally regarded as the most important German composer prior to Johann Sebastian Bach. The Organ Prelude is an expansive interpretation of Psalm 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death. It is by Herbert Howells ( ), an English composer, organist and teacher, known primarily for his Anglican Church music. The Organ Postlude is a two part voluntary (slow fast) for full organ by Maurice Greene ( ), an English organist (St. Paul s Cathedral, London), teacher (Cambridge University) and composer of much Anglican Church music. Thank you, St. John s Choir: has resumed regular rehearsals and liturgical leadership, and is now preparing for the Ascension Day Convocation-wide Confirmation liturgy with Bishop Stokes (May 14), as well as our own Ascension Sunday and Pentecost 7

8 festival services, Evensong on June 7, and the final Choral Eucharist of the season on St. John s Day (celebrated on June 21). Food Pantry: The Food Pantry distribution day is now only on Tuesday from noon to 2:00 p.m. This decision was made after some careful research which noted that there are a number of other pantry sites within Salem City which cover all the days of the week with the exception of Tuesday. There are copies of the distribution sites on the hall counter in the Parish House. Please note that we continue to need volunteers and contributions especially beginning the middle of the month when we were getting as many as 50 persons seeking food over the two-week period. There is a May sign-up sheet on the office door; and May 5, 12, and 26 are still open. Please lend a hand. No Kid Hungry St. John s Children are holding a fundraiser for No Kid Hungry. They are selling all kinds of yummy treats and some healthy baked goods during Healthy/Fruit Sunday Fellowship Hour [3 rd Sunday of each month]. Special orders don t upset us.there are order forms on the board in the Parish Hall and you can get these filled at any time.baked to order cakes, pies, 2 dozen cookies all $5 each. Yoga Classes are now on Monday and Thursday nights from 5-6 p.m, except on the third Monday when they are from 5:30 6:30 p.m. This Monday the class begins at 5:00 p.m. Special Teas and Coffee are on sale to support the Episcopal Relief and Development.
