The New Testament 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and led astray to idols that could not speak. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says "Let Jesus be cursed!" and no one can say "Jesus is Lord" except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the 4

5 interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come." His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you." Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, "Fill the jars with water." And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, "Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward." So they took it. The beautiful flowers at the Altar are given by Kit Stout to the Glory of God and in loving memory of her mother, Kathleen Kay N. Stout, E. H. Dick Stout, and Ivy and Harry Stout. 7 Announcements Music in today s liturgy: Today is the Second Sunday after the Epiphany. As is the norm at St. John s Church, all the music is selected to coordinate with the themes of the prayers and lessons appointed for this day. The choir also sings an Introit appropriate for the Epiphany Season, a chorale harmonized by Johann Sebastian Bach ( ).The Choir s Offertory Anthem is a movement from Vesperae Solennes de Confessore, K.339, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ( ) a prolific and influential composer of the Classical era. The Soprano soloist is Kelly Freno, our paid soprano chorister. The Organ Prelude is an extended Chorale Prelude by Dietrich Buxtehude ( ). It is based on the Introit which the Choir sings today. Organ Postlude is by George Phillip Telemann ( ), a self-taught German composer and, organist (Kantor for the Lateineschule and Music Director for the 5 largest churches in Hamburg). This work, too, is based on the Choral Introit. Thank you, Choir: The Choir s Post-Christmas Party will be on Sunday afternoon, February 3, at the home of Bill & Mary Anne Clisham. Food Pantry: The Food Pantry distribution day is now only on Tuesday from noon to 2:00 p.m. This decision was made after some careful research which noted that there are a number of other pantry sites within Salem City which cover all the days of the week with the exception of Tuesday. There are copies of the distribution sites on the hall counter in the Parish House. Please note that we continue to need volunteers and contributions. We served 62 people this week. Volunteers for January are: 1/8 Laurie, 1/15 Bonnie & Rick, 1/22 Sue, 1/29 Aud & Karen. A Tercentenary Committee Meeting is scheduled for today after the second service. REMINDER: St. John s Annual Meeting is next Sunday, January 27, after the second service starting with lunch. Please use the sign up sheet in the Parish Hall to record the number coming and what side dish or dessert you will bring. Come share the fellowship, information, and plans for the future.
