SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION 5:15 p.m. Saturdays at the Liberty site and upon request. Survey of Parish Life Thank you so very much for your overwhelming response to our survey of Parish Life. Your input is immensely helpful for our Parish! Using information gathered from the survey, along with other data being collected about our Parish and community, the Pastoral Council is better able to craft a new Pastoral Plan for our Saint Mark Parish. This is an exciting time for us all, and we look forward to sharing the results with you in the New Year. So you know, once we tabulate and study the results and other data, we plan to host Parish Assemblies in the springtime for us to listen and learn more from one another so we can plan accordingly and work together for a more vibrant, healthy and sustainable future for our Saint Mark Parish family. A Thanksgiving Offering for Our Food Bank In next week s bulletin, there will be an envelope for a donation for our charitable works during the holiday season. Appeal for Toys Saint Mark Food Bank is collecting new toys only for children from infants to 10 years old for Christmas. Please deposit new toys in Food Bank boxes at either worship site. The deadline for returning your Mass form for the 2013 Masses is Wednesday, October 31. Roman Missal, Preface of Christian Death I Feast of All Souls Mass of Remembrance Friday, November 2, 2012 at 7pm, Port Vue site This special liturgy is offered to remember the members of our parish family who have passed away over the last year. During the liturgy, as the name of the deceased is called, a member of the family or a friend brings a candle to the Altar where it remains lighted in memory of their loved one. Saint Mark Parish provides the candles. Our Ladies of Charity carry the candles for any family who cannot be present. Please join us at this liturgy in memory of our beloved dead. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. CCM & Ladies Guild News Join us November 5, 2012 Plan Your Funeral Before you need it! Rosary, 7:15pm LB; Meeting, 7:30pm, Father Rowan Hall; Program starts at 7:45pm given by Sue Striffler Galaski, of Striffler s Funeral Homes. Sue will discuss advance funeral service planning. She will share how planning ahead puts you in control by allowing you to make informed choices and ensures your wishes to be known. ALL parishioners are welcome. Children s Christmas Choir Calling all boys and girls to join our Children s Christmas Choir! This group is open to all children, Kindergarten through sixth grade. The choir will sing for the 6:00pm Christmas Eve Children s liturgy at the Liberty site. Rehearsals begin on Sunday, November 18th from 12:15pm to 1:15pm at the Port Vue site. Oplatki Christmas Wafers Oplatki Christmas Wafers will be on sale after all Masses starting, November 10th and 11th. There are four wafers in one package for just $2.50. You may purchase them in the Sacristy at the Port Vue site or in the Vestibule at the Liberty site. Wafers also are available at the Administration Center. Recognition of Lay Ministers Next weekend we, the Church of Pittsburgh, recognize and celebrate all lay ministers, and offer our gratitude for the service they offer to our parish in many and diverse ways such as teachers, servers at the altar, readers, extraordinary ministers, ushers, cantors, choir members, pastoral and finance council, food bankers, project team members, van drivers, etc. Please take a moment to thank those who bring Christ Jesus to each of us, and please pray for them. VIRTUS Protecting God's Children Workshop If you have not attended the Virtus Protecting God's Children Workshop and you are active in parish ministry, please know that SAINT MARK PARISH is hosting a Virtus Workshop on Tuesday, 13 November, 6:30pm-9:30pm at Father Rowan Hall, 3210 Liberty Way, McKeesport. Attending a Virtus Workshop is a requirement of our Diocese of Pittsburgh Safe Environment Policy which has been effective since Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. Holiday Bingo Saint Mark Parish Youth Group will be hosting its annual Holiday Bingo on Friday, November 16 th. Doors will open at 5:30 pm, early bird games will begin at 6:30 pm and the regular bingo games will follow the early bird games. As always, this promises to be a fun evening with great food, Chinese Auction Baskets, Instant Bingo Tickets and 50/50. Tickets are $20.00 and can be purchased either: from a Youth Group Member/Advisor, from an Advisor after Mass or by calling Lori DiMarco at for reserved tickets. 5 SAINT MARK PARISH MCKEESPORT, PA To live our Faith, we need to know our Faith! Year of Faith: 11 October 2012 to 24 November 2013 " They called the Church together and reported what GOD had done with them and how He had opened the door of faith..." (Acts of the Apostles 14:27). Laying a Firm Foundation: Understanding the Four Pillars of Our Faith When someone makes an argument that has little of no substance to it, we say that the person doesn t have a leg to stand on. As Catholics, we actually have four legs to stand on! The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us that our faith is grounded in the firm foundation of the following four principles: 1. The Creed (holding onto faith) 2. The Sacraments (expressing faith) 3. The Moral Life ( living faith) 4. Prayer (praying faith) The Creed From New Testament times, Christians have expressed their beliefs in formulas called professions of faith or creeds from the Latin, credo, I believe (C ). Professions of faith are first made when we are baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Creeds are accordingly divided into three parts: The Father and creation, The Son and redemption, the Holy Spirit and the sanctification. (C ). There are two creeds of special importance; the Apostles Creed and the Nicene Creed. The Apostles Creed is a summary of the apostles faith; it is the Creed of the Roman Church. The Nicene Creed comes from the first two ecumenical councils of the Church. The Catechism follows the Apostles Creed in its presentation of the faith, supplementing it with references to the Nicene Creed. Ancient tradition lists twelve major articles of the Creed. The Catechism uses these articles to help explain and define the Creed. Can you identify these twelve articles? Five Essential Qualities of Parish Life as per THE CHURCH ALIVE! ( Eucharist: How the parish comes together to express its life in Christ the way we recognize and celebrate God in the Mass and in the celebration of the Sacraments. Evangelization: How the parish continues to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ so to bring God to others (and others to God). Catechesis: How all parishioners are educated in the Scriptures and Tradition of the Church to live our Faith, we need to know our Faith. Formation: How the parish promotes a lived faith which is bold, courageous and effective our lives express and reveal our relationship with Jesus Christ. Stewardship: How the parish offers thanksgiving for the many gifts of God and shares those gifts through acts of service we give of ourselves in loving self-sacrifice for the greater glory of God, the betterment of one another (now and future generations) and for our own salvation.
