Saint Mark Parish 50/50 In your offertory packet, there is a tan colored envelope marked 50/50 Drawing--Donation $5.00. At the end of each month, all envelopes are placed in a drum and one lucky winner is drawn to win half of the take. Our September winner is Jane Manning. Natural Family Planning Promotion Day Sunday, 13 October 2013, is the Diocese of Pittsburgh Second Annual Natural Family Planning (NFP) Promotion Day. All parishes are asked to raise awareness of this effective, healthy and holy alternative for family planning. NFP works in full cooperation with God s design of human physiology and consistently has shown to be beneficial for the covenant of marriage. Convocation of Diocesan Priests The triennial Convocation of Priests of the Diocese of Pittsburgh begins Monday, 21 October 2013 and concludes Thursday, 24 October 2013, and is held at the Oglebay Conference Center. This is an opportunity for our Priests to join with Bishop Zubik for spiritual renewal, pastoral and professional development, and priestly fraternity. Your prayers for the success of this gathering are very important. Please pray for Bishop Zubik, Father Daniel and all of our diocesan Priests in anticipation and during the Convocation. Thank you. Clergy Appreciation Month is a special time congregations set aside each year to honor their pastors for the hard work, sacrificial dedication and multiple blessings provided by these special people. The nature of the service provided by pastors and their families is unique. God has entrusted to them one of the most precious of assignments the spiritual well-being of His flock. God has instructed us to recognize His servants. The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. (1 Timothy 5:17) Do something special for our pastor this month. Pray for his spiritual strength and purity, and that he will seek earnestly to serve God above all else. Put Saint Mark Parish in your Will or ask for donations to our parish in lieu of flowers at your funeral. Thank you! And God bless you! Please help support our liturgical celebration with a donation. Your kind generosity is greatly appreciated! OCTOBER COUNT Very Important! Each weekend in October, a count is made of the attendance at all Masses. These figures are forwarded to the Diocese to help determine future decisions in the organization of the parishes and alignment of clergy. It is important to the parish that we all attend Mass here and not elsewhere during October. Thank you! Youth Group Harvest Party On Sunday, 20 October, our Saint Mark Parish Youth Group is hosting their annual Harvest Party for the residents of Womansplace in McKeesport. Youth Group Outdoor Mass The Youth Group is hosting its annual Outdoor Mass on Tuesday, 15 October, at 7:00pm at the Youth House (indoors if weather does not permit). ALL ARE WELCOME to come and share the experience of a beautiful Mass with the youth of our parish. Flu Shot Clinic Flu shots will be given Saturday, 19 October, after the 6:00pm Mass. Saint Mark Parish BIBLE STUDY Saint Mark Parish is hosting a Seven Week BIBLE STUDY starting Wednesday, 9 October November 2013, at 7:00pm at our Port Vue Meeting Room (former library). Join us every Wednesday as we start learning how to read the Bible the way our Catholic Church has always read it. Gain a greater understanding of Genesis, and God s original intent in creating woman and man. Come to a greater appreciation for the key figures and themes in the Old Testament, from Abraham to Melchizedek, circumcision, the sacrifice of Isaac and much more as they are understood in the Church s tradition. Plan to read the books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy, and gain a better understanding of the history of Israel and the crucial importance of God s everlasting Covenant with David, along with the mission of Jesus and the Church as it is presented in the New Testament. Year of Faith: 11 October 2012 to 24 November 2013 " They called the Church together and reported what GOD had done with them and how He had opened the door of faith..." (Acts of the Apostles 14:27). Natural Family Planning Promotion Day (13 October 2013) As stated by Bishop Zubik, "How important it is that ALL Catholics understand the holy teaching of the Church about the meaning and responsibilities of marriage, and the gift of human sexuality as well as the role of Natural Family Planning." As a unified effort, the Diocese of Pittsburgh is promoting Natural Family Planning (NFP) Promotion Day to celebrate the dignity of marriage and family life and to highlight the Respect for Life Month celebration. Facts about Natural Family Planning (NFP) "Married love is powerfully embodied in the spouses' sexual relationship, when they most fully express what it means to become 'one body' (Genesis 2:24) or 'one flesh' (Mark 10:8, Matthew 19:6). The Church teaches that the sexual union of husband and wife is meant to express the full meaning of love, its power to bind a couple together and its openness to new life. (Married Love and the Gift of Life, USCCB) Purpose of Marriage: The Catholic Church teaches that married love and its expression through sexual intercourse has two fundamental purposes. It is, at one and the same time: LIFE-GIVING - resulting in the procreation and faith formation of children, who are part of the totality of marriage. LOVE-GIVING - resulting in unity of the spouses in a permanent community of life and love. These dual purposes are so intrinsic to marriage and the mutual exchange of life and love by a married couple that to block either the unitive or the procreative aspects is to misuse this great gift from God; therefore, to do so is always a serious moral wrongdoing. Natural Family Planning: NFP is a proven, scientific and highly effective way for a couple to respect both the unitive and procreative nature of marriage and sexual intercourse and, at the same time, to practice responsible parenthood. NFP preserves true and integrally honest love. If defends the dignity of man and woman as each gives and receives the unconditional and total love of the other.
