2 The Armenian Church celebrates the holy birth (Sourp Dznount) of Jesus Christ on January 6. In Armenian tradition, this feast day commemorates not only the birth of Christ, but also His baptism by John the Baptist. The latter is remembered through the "Blessing of Water" ceremony, which follows the Divine Liturgy on January 6. On the eve of the Feast of the Nativity and Theophany of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Jrakalouyts Divine Liturgy (the lighting of the lamps service) is celebrated in honor of the manifestation of Jesus as the Son of God (theophany). It is custom for the faithful to hold lit candles during this special service. On the following day, the mystery of our Lord's baptism in the River Jordan is remembered in the ceremony of the Jurorhnek, or the "Blessing of Water." In ancient times, this ceremony was celebrated by the riverside or sea shore, but, for various reasons, it was later confined to the interior of the churches. During the ceremony, the cross is dipped in water, recalling Christ's immersion in the Jordan River. Blessed oil, or Holy Chrism (Muron), is poured into the water from a dove-shaped container, symbolizing the appearance at the baptism of the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove and the voice of the Father proclaiming to all that Jesus is His Son. At the end of the ceremony, members of the congregation are given the blessed water to drink, thereby sharing in the life giving act of Christ. As water is essential to the life of the body, drinking the blessed water is a reminder that participation in the acts of Christ is essential for eternal life.

Во время Крещения Господа явилось свидетельство от Бога Отца: «Сей есть Сын Мой Возлюбленный, в Котором Мое благоволение» (Мат. 3:17, Марк. 1:11, Лук. 3:22) и Дух Святой в виде голубя снизошёл на Христа. Так происходит второе Богоявление. Таким образом, двойное откровение Богоявления через Рождество и Крещение Христа церковь празднует воедино 6-го января и под общим названием «Откровение» или «Богоявление». Праздник начинается с вечера 5-го января и простирается за полночь. 5-го января празднуется Сочельник Богоявления и служится Св. Литургия. Утром 6-го января также служится Св. Литургия, после чего совершается обряд освящения воды в память Крещения Иисуса (в народе говорят: «Крест в воду падает»). Своим Крещением Иисус освятил воду. Служитель Литургии добавляет в воду св. Миро и благословляет её молитвой. Согласно традиции, верующие люди несут в свои дома немного этой воды, как целебное средство для больных, так как вода, освященная в этот день, именуется крещенской и обладает особенными благодатными свойствами. Крещенскую воду следует благоговейно хранить и относиться к ней, как к великой святыне. Благую весть рождения Христа передают и священники, посещая верующих и освящая их дома.

4 One of the holy traditions of the Armenian Church is the Home Blessing Service, which according to St. Gregory of Datev was established by Our Savior Jesus Christ, when after His Resurrection He entered the upper room and blessed the disciples. When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." (John 20:19). During the apostolic times, the twelve apostles of Jesus visited the homes of the faithful to bless them and to spread the good news of Christ s birth and His Resurrection. Likewise their followers - priests and bishops, entered the homes of the faithful on the occasions of Theophany and Easter (Holy Resurrection) to tell the good news of our Lord s Nativity and to bless them and their homes through a special Service. Through the Home Blessing Service, the house of the faithful becomes a small church. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. (Philippians 1:2). During the Service the priest prays to God and asks Him to keep the home, its inhabitants, and the children in good health, so that they live a devout life, glorify the name of Almighty God and heighten the Holy Church. Love and peace are established in the sanctified home. Therefore, it is desirable that the faithful devoutly keep the graces from heaven, which filled their homes. But if sinful behavior dominates in the house it can never become a church inhabited by the Holy Trinity, saints and angels. According to the sacred traditions of the Armenian Church, God's blessing is asked for homes on different occasions, like on the Nativity and the Resurrection of Christ, as well as on the joyous occasion of moving into a new home. Holiday season is the time when homes are blessed by the Pastor. All parishioners who wish to have their homes blessed on the occasion of the Feast of the Theophany and Nativity of Christ should call Der Voskan (914) to make arrangements. Have a piece of bread, dish of salt and glass of water available for the blessing.

Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel which means, God with us. When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
