Bethlehem Lutheran Church Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer ELCA April, 2019 Greetings in Christ, We are now blessed with spring and the beautiful month of April hopefully without snowstorms. This April we have the Holy Week beginning with Palm Sunday and culminating with the Pascha or Easter Sunday. The date of Easter is closely related to Jewish holy day of Passover. Just for fun information, Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox. The earliest Easter date is March 22 and the latest April 25 on the western or Gregorian calendar. Both Passover and Easter are times of God s deliverance of his people. With Passover, God delivered the Israelite people from slavery under the Pharaoh in Egypt. God never deserted, never forgot, his people and responded to their cries for help and deliverance from their misery. With Easter, God sent his only son to save his beloved people from sin and death. By God s beloved son Jesus giving his life, he conquered that sin and death and claimed all his children as his own. Thus our Savior through his ministry, suffering, death and resurrection brings deliverance to all of us, unworthy and too often unfaithful people. Hope is our key word. We have that hope based upon our Savior s death and resurrection; based upon the trustworthiness of our Lord God; based upon divine love. For God so loved the world, (John 3:16) God loves the entire world, no exceptions, no God-forsaken places or people. For God is love!! (1 John 4:8-9) Blessings, Pastor Jeanne Pastor Jeanne Larsen (703) Bethlehem Lutheran Church (970) lutheranchurchbrush@yahoo.com 9:00 a.m. Mondays: 8:00am-10:00am 12:30pm-3:30pm Wednesday: 8:00am-12:00pm Phone Sunday Worship Times Office Hours Administrative Assistant: Terresa Lauck Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer (970) lcor-morgan@msn.com 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays: 8:00am-12:00pm Thursdays: 8:00am-12:00pm

The Call Committee recently invited a pastor candidate and his wife to come to Morgan County for a site visit. While here, they were provided with a tour of both churches, the parsonage, and the communities of Brush and Ft. Morgan. Next the pastor candidate met with the Call Committee. The Call Committee unanimously voted to recommend this candidate to both church councils for hire. After enjoying a wonderful potluck, the candidate also met with both church councils for discussions. Later this week the councils from both churches will meet to decide if they will formally call this candidate. Once the call is made and accepted by the candidate, both congregations will vote to approve the call at a formal meeting of the congregations. The congregation approval will also include the financial package. The Call Committee worked very diligently to select a good candidate for our congregations. A special thanks to everyone who has participated in the process, for their time, commitment, and dedication. Hopefully soon, we will have a new pastor to be the spiritual leader for everyone. Bethlehem Lutheran Church Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer Sunday, April 14th 10:00 a.m. (following worship) We will be voting on: * Calling a new pastor * Pastor finance package Sunday, April 14th 11:30 a.m. (following worship) Please pray for the following who have been submitted to our prayer list: Brian Ernst, Evelyn Cleary, Dick Mai, Lon Dahl, and Annie Jo Green. Please remember that names are kept on our prayer list for three weeks, and then removed. If you would like for someone to be kept on our ongoing list, please let Terresa know. 2

To all Bethlehem ladies who prepared food for the Lenten Luncheon on March 13 th that was cancelled. To everyone who parceled out the food that was at the church and shared it with Bethlehem family and friends. To the Bethlehem members and friends who attended the Lenten Luncheon on March 29 th and at that time volunteered to provide desserts to assist Eben Ezer when it hosts the luncheon on April 3 rd. To everyone who continues to place containers and plastic out in the Fellowship Hall to catch the drips from the ceiling. We are having some roofers look at the situation and hope to take care of it shortly. BLC & LCOR Members, Thank you to my church family. I wish to say I appreciate your support and concerns during the past 11 months. I had many appointments in Denver. Many kind people asked how I was doing. Thanks for your prayers and concerns while I was healing from my nose. Marvin Rosten Thank you so much for being a coffee shop for our neighbors! We appreciate Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer opening their doors to us. We only took two neighbors, but they really enjoyed getting donuts and then having coffee at the church. It was very nice!! Eben Ezer Lutheran Care Center Pines Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! Many thanks to Betty Dahl for making the beautiful purple cloth that has been hanging on our cross in the sanctuary during Lent and also for making the white cloth that will be put up for Easter. 3

Global Church Missions By confirmation students Jack Barron & Myer Wickham Around the world there are about 240 Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) missionaries. These missionaries are found in all corners of the world. They include 60 young adults spreading the Word of God. The ELCA is generous enough to award over 40 scholarships every year to these young people. The ministries build new congregations, train leaders, assist existing churches and help to share the Good News around the world. Across the globe these churches and missionaries help people from all aspects of life learn about Christ and his mission. These young adults help fight hunger, poverty, malaria, HIV, and AIDS. Also, the people of the ELCA help build churches and safe places for those in need and in danger. By doing this they strengthen these long-term mutual relationships the Lutheran community has as a whole, the more than 80 companion churches. Our Rocky Mountain Synod has as its companion the four synods and the seminary of Madagascar. We share our gifts and talents with each other. From Jack - The Denmark ELCA plays a large role in Europe as a whole. Although the country is quite small they have hearts the size all Lutheran churches across the world. Denmark works with the Church of Copenhagen and together they welcome strangers, expatriates, immigrants and a growing refugee community. In 2015 Denmark received about 18,000 Immigrants. These immigrants are given housing and health care. Children ages 7 to 16 are allowed to go to school free of charge. This church provides support to the International Congress of Copenhagen and a vital link for the churches across Europe and the states of the former Soviet Union. From Myer I think ELCA is a great program that is helping a lot of people find faith and become closer with God. The ELCA Missions take place worldwide and this organization has people go to certain places to help out in that community. In some places, the ELCA Missionaries have helped build churches and provide a reliable way for people to get food and water. One program involves young adults who serve for a year in different countries. The places I find interesting are Brazil, Australia, Peru, and Sweden. These places along with all of the other ELCA missions all do projects, community service, and have a weekly church service to help bring everybody closer together. A universal goal for all missionaries around the world is to help people find Christ and teach them to worship and pray. When it comes to this organization, there are many ways you can help out. You can do something as simple as donating money, or you could get involved with the program and volunteer your time to help make your community, along with other communities around the world, a better place. 4

I. The Chair is Pastor James Campbell s spiritual odyssey that leads us through the night of emptiness and then emerges into the light of compassion, intervention, and redemption. Sometimes, one needs a special mentor to find life and its wonder. Sometimes that mentor is a chair. The Chair is a metaphor, at first puzzling, then intriguing and then a reference to life and how we can help others. So keep on reading, it s enjoyable and enlightening! II. Nearing Home by Billy Graham is about life, faith, and finishing well. Explore not only the realities of life as we grow older but also the hope and fulfillment and even joy that can be ours once we learn to look at these years from God s point of view and discover His strength to sustain us every day. When we look back over our experiences along life s journey, we may have regrets about the choices we made, but remember, that was then this is now. Encourage one another and build each other up. (I Thessalonians 5:II) Worship. Praise. Play. Don t miss Skillet (June 8th) and Crowder (July 27th) rock the Elitch Arena! Please plan to join us on Saturday, April 20th at 9:30 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church to beautify the cross with Easter lilies in preparation for Sunday s Easter worship. Deadline to order discount tickets ($25.99 for concert & park admission) is May 19th. Let Terresa in the church office know if you re interested in attending. 12
