Beloved wife of Bob Smith, also a chapel volunteer and retired Chief of the Chicago Fire Department, and loving mother of Maureen Smith and SSGT Marty Smith, U.S.A.F, Maryann will be remembered for her kind and cheerful disposition and her dedication to her family. Friends spoke of her great sense of humor, compassion, acceptance, her kind heart and her loyal friendship. She was born August 6, 1950, the dear sister of James K. (Judith) Gorman and the late John P. (Diane) Gorman; beloved daughter of the late John J. Gorman, Jr. and the late Ann nee Fielding; daughter-in-law of Charles (Pamela) Smith; sister in law of David (Donna) Smith, Kim (Ed) Malesh, DeeDee (Joe) Huebner, Chuck Smith and Bill Smith; aunt of Jill (Roger) Gates, Brian (Alison) Gorman, Margaret (Nate) Greaney and Amy (Brian) Zale; great aunt of six. In 2012, Mary Ann, who served as a lector, and Bob, who has served as sacristan, lector, usher, and Eucharistic Minister at O Hare Airport Chapel, were recipients of the Archdiocese of Chicago Christifideles Award for their service to the Chicago Airports Catholic Chaplaincy. Bob retired from the Chicago Fire Department as Deputy District Chief at O Hare in Mary Anne taught at various Chicago Archdiocesan Catholic Schools. The funeral Mass was celebrated May 3 by Fr. Michael Zaniolo at St. Peter Catholic Church in Skokie, where the Smiths were married. We extend our sincere condolences to Bob, Maureen and Marty, and ask you to pray for the repose of the soul of Maryann. The Smiths with Lynn Busiedlik and Fr. Zaniolo at Holy Name Cathedral, 2012

2 Fourth Sunday of Easter May 11, 2014 He himself bore our sins in his body upon the cross, so that, free from sin, we might live for righteousness. 1 Peter 2:24a FOLLOWING THE GOOD SHEPHERD The joyful tone of the past three Sundays of Easter is a little darker today. All three readings remind us of suffering, death, and sin. We, like Peter s audience in the first reading, can ask, What are we to do? And the answer will be the same: we must reform. Or, as Peter says in his first Letter, we have strayed like sheep and must return to the shepherd. Jesus describes himself as a shepherd in today s Gospel, and we know it was one of the earliest images of Christ in the apostolic church. Today s passage continues the darker theme of the first two readings. Danger lurks and the sheep need protection. They might follow a false leader; they might be stolen or destroyed. Only in Jesus Christ will we be safe. Only in him will we have eternal life. While the lack of confirmation is not an obstacle for marriage, it is for godparenting. Many are surprised that the Church seems to be looking for a kind of sacramental seal on one s baptism before the door opens fully to this ministry. Yet if you think about it, would you want someone to guide you to a place that he or she had not yet been? A godparent has to be someone who has been there and knows the way. Although signet rings and wax seals have passed from use, our society depends on seals of approval ranging from certificates of quality to the familiar safety seals on medicines and foods. While Eucharist is the seal of the sacrament of baptism, there is a sense in which one s Christian initiation is also incomplete without confirmation. Have you been confirmed? MAJOLUS (Maieul, Mayeul, Mayeule) (c. 906 May 11, 994), friend of emperors and popes who several times refused the papacy, was a Benedictine and fourth Abbot of Cluny. He was responsible for the Cluniac monastic reform which spread throughout Europe. Majolus is still remembered as "one of the most attractive figures of his age and the warmest of all the abbots of Cluny, striking everywhere an authentic note of holiness. He is considered to have been the most contemplative of all the abbots," in the words of historian Noreen Hunt. [For more about Cluny read Cluny in Search of God s Lost Empire by Edwin Mullins. Here is a description of the book: One thousand years ago, the French abbey of Cluny was the hub of one of the most powerful empires of the Middle Ages and the spiritual heart of Europe. Cluny was a Benedictine monastery in Burgundy, its church a breathtaking structure of towers, roofs, walls, and windows almost 600 feet long and 100 feet high a true wonder of the world. Reconstructing the lives, beliefs, and ambitions of Cluny's countless monks and legendary abbots, such as Hugh the Great and Peter the Venerable, this book discusses the abbey and its network of 1,500 dependent monasteries in the context of medieval European history. Exploring a monastery like no other, this historical account investigates Cluny's enduring legacy through the great cultural innovations that the abbey sponsored, from the famous medieval pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela to some of the most magnificent churches in all of France and England. Cluny, founded near Mâcon in Burgundy just about the time Majolus was born, was a center of monastic reform during the 10th and 11th centuries, known for its concentration on communal prayer and the expansion and elaboration of the liturgy. The monks sang the whole Psalter every week [a liturgical book containing the psalms and biblical canticles used in divine services] and read the whole Bible every year. By the mid-12th century, there were more than one thousand Cluniac monasteries. St. Majolus had much to do with promoting the Cluniac reforms. Born in Avignon in the city which became the seat of the papacy 400 years later [ , a period known as the "Babylonian Captivity" of the papacy] - Majolus went to live with relatives in Mâcon when his family's large estates in Avignon, to which he was heir, were overrun by Saracen invaders. He studied philosophy at Lyon under a famous master, Antony, and became archdeacon at Mâcon. While still young, he was pressured to become a bishop, but he refused and became a monk at Cluny. As librarian and bursar, both the copying and collecting of books and day-today expenses where his responsibility. His wisdom and prudence became widely known as he journeyed on behalf of the monastery. The chroniclers tells us Majolus was a handsome man with a fine presence who inspired both respect and affection. With his aristocratic background, he could handle dealings with rulers of both Church and State. Eventually, when the abbot Aymard died, Majolus succeeded him in 965. Though the emperor Otto II wished him to be pope, Majolus felt the Romans would not be able to agree to this, and besides he was convinced that Cluny was his most important mission. The Arabs of Fraxinet in Provence captured Majolus in 972 as he crossed the Saint Bernard Pass. Majolus was ransomed by the monks of Cluny for a thousand pounds of silver. This outrage upon the greatest monk in the Christian West was followed by the extermination of Fraxinet by the lords of Provence in 975. (Wikipedia) During his abbacy the replacement abbey church of Cluny (Cluny II) was consecrated in 981. Shortly before his death, he made Saint Odilo his coadjutor. Majolus died while on his way to Saint-Denis. In 1793 his relics, together with those of Odilo, were burned by the revolutionaries. (B,E,L) ST. FRANCIS DI GIROLAMO ( ), a native of southeastern Italy, became a priest in 1666, joined the Jesuits in 1670, and hoped to become a missionary to Japan or India. For 40 years he desired this. But he was told that Naples - close to his home turf - would have to be considered his India or Japan. "Men and women flocked to his confessional; it was said that 400 hardened sinners were reconciled by him each year. He would go to the most neglected and dangerous parts of town, where sometimes he was physically attacked." Francis died in Naples at 74, and was buried in the Jesuit Church of Gesu Nuovo, where his tomb can still be visited, though after WWII his relics were transferred to the Jesuit church in Grottaglie. (L) In 1816, the American Bible Society was formed. In 1825, the American Tract Society was organized. Monday, May 12, 2014 We Remember: SS. NEREUS AND ACHILLEUS, ST. PANCRATIUS: The persecution of Diocletian aimed at eliminating Christianity first from the Roman army. Nereus and Achilleus were recently baptized soldiers. In 304 they died courageously for Christ. Pancras (or Pancratius) underwent martyrdom during the same persecution of Diocletian, perhaps on the same day and year (304) as Neurus and Achilleus. Pancras, only a lad of 14 years, courageously sacrificed his young life for Jesus Christ. (V) Tuesday, May 13, 2014 We Remember: ST. SERVATIUS (d. 384), Bishop of Tongres in Belgium. An Armenian by birth, he defended St. Athanasius and provided him a place of refuge. BL. JULIAN OF NORWICH, (c c. 1420), long venerated for the depths of spiritual insight displayed in her Book of Showings (also known as Revelations of Divine Love). An English mystic, she lived a life of solitude as an anchoress; at age 30, seemingly near death due to illness, she received sixteen mystical visions on the Passion of Christ and the Trinity, described in the book mentioned above. "Through the development of images of the Creator as father and mother, of Jesus as brother, savior, and mother, and of the Spirit as spouse, Julian faced the reality of sin, the struggle between good and evil, and the mercy of God, particularly experienced in the Church's sacramental celebrations. Julian created a unique language combining special words and images to develop her mystical doctrines. At the time of her death her reputation for sanctity was already widespread. Visitors from all over Europe were attracted to her monastic cell. Although she is popularly called Blessed, there has never been any formal ecclesiastical confirmation of this title. However, those devoted to her memory and example observe May 13 as her feast day." (E) In 1981, ST. POPE JOHN PAUL II was shot twice at close range while riding in an open automobile in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican. Two other persons also were wounded. An escaped terrorist, Mehmet Ali Agca, was arrested and convicted July 22, After convalescence, Pope John Paul II was pronounced recovered by his doctors Aug. 14, He forgave Mehmet, meeting with him in jail. Wednesday, May 14, 2014 We Remember: ST. MATTHIAS (1 st Century) took the place of Judas Iscariot (Acts 1:15-26). He was chosen by lot by the remaining Eleven. This feast is placed in the period between the Ascension of the Lord and the feast of Pentecost because it was during that time, according to the Acts of the Apostles, that Matthias was chosen. He evangelized Cappadocia and the area around the Caspian Sea. We know nothing about the details of his martyrdom; legend says he was either crucified or beheaded. (S) ST. MARY MAZZARELLO ( ), like many women religious, was like a mother to many. Born near Genoa, the eldest daughter of a hard working farm family. She attended Mass often and at 18, joined a Marian sodality (an association of the faithful for the promotion of piety, charity and public worship), started by the parish priest - who was in turn inspired by the work of ST. JOHN BOSCO, then working in Turin. In 1860, the Sodalists were asked to nurse the victims of a typhoid outbreak, and in doing so Mary caught the fever and almost died. Weakened by this illness, Mary took up dressmaking and started a business which hired local girls. This was the beginning of the Salesian Sisters, who aimed at combining piety with work and education in a very natural and joyful way, as St. John Bosco had done for boys. Mary was chosen superior and in 1872, eleven sisters took their vows. In spite of a limited education, she was very successful governing the congregation, which rapidly spread in Italy, France, and South America. Only 44 when she died, her body reposes next to St. John Bosco in Turin. Today, her Congregation has 1,400 houses in 54 countries. She was canonized in (L) Thursday, May 15, 2014 We Remember: ST. ISIDORE ( ) spent his whole life working as a farm laborer on an estate outside of Madrid. He married a girl as poor and holy as himself, ST. MARIE DE LA CABEZA. After their only son died in infancy, they lived the rest of their married life in perfect chastity. Isidore was a man of intense prayer and his life was marked by numerous miracles and supernatural interventions. His wife survived him for several years and they are both venerated as saints in Spain. Canonized in 1622, he is the patron saint of Madrid. St. Isidore is celebrated in the U.S. as the patron of the National Catholic Rural Life Conference. He is, however, not only a patron for farmers, but

4 serves as a model of the spirituality of the laity. He shows how persons living and occupied in the world, and especially those doing manual labor, can be united with God in prayer even as they perform their daily duties. His charity toward the poor and needy and his respect for God's creation are of special significance to those living in our modern consumer society. He is also a reminder to all lay persons in the Church that they are called by God to sanctify the temporal order in this world. (S,B) In 1948, the death of FR. EDWARD J. FLANAGAN, founder of Boys Town in Nebraska. He died in Berlin, Germany, while advising European governments on operating similar programs. (W) In 1961, MATER ET MAGISTRA, the great encyclical by Pope John XXIII on the Church's relevance to international economics and the social order, was published. (W) Friday, May 16, 2014 We Remember: ST. BRENDAN OF CLONFERT (c ) was a monk, later abbot, and his principal area of activity was western Ireland, and among the main abbeys he founded was Clonfert. We sometimes hear of Brendan referred to as "the Navigator," both for his many journeys founding abbeys in Ireland, Scotland and Wales, and because of a romance written in ninth-century Germany by an exiled Irish monk, which tells of the sea voyage with a group of monks to an island of promise in the Atlantic Ocean. There are scholars who believe the accounts of Brendan s voyages, which Christopher Columbus studied, were based on actual events, and that he did reach North America. (L) ST. SIMON STOCK ( ) was among the first English people to join the Carmelites and eventually (1247) became the sixth general of the order. He was instrumental in establishing houses at the principal university cities of Europe: Cambridge (1248), Oxford (1253), Paris (1260), Bologna (1260), and in modifying the rule so that the Carmelites became an order of mendicant friars rather than of hermits. The Carmelite Scapular, which signifies shouldering the "yoke" of Jesus Christ, has been most popular in the Church. The Carmelite Orders of men and women are devoted to contemplation. ST. THERESA OF AVILA and ST. JOHN OF THE CROSS are champions of their spirit. (B,D) ST. JOHN NEPOMUCEN, patron of Bohemia, was a priest who served as vicar general of his diocese and was martyred in 1393 for helping to preserve the goods of a monastery from the devious actions of the king. On the night he was killed by being thrown from a bridge, legend says that seven stars hovered over the water. In 1164, the death of HELOISE, Abbess of the Convent of the Paraclete. The story of Heloise and Abelard is one of the most famous of the Middle Ages. In 1209, ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI ( ) founded the Order of Friars Minor (O.F.M.), which came to be called the Franciscans. Preaching, missionary, educational, parochial, and charitable work characterizes their apostolate. (W) Saturday, May 17, 2014 We Remember: ST. PASCHAL BAYLON ( ) started his life as a shepherd. Later he became a Franciscan lay-brother and spent his life mainly as doorkeeper in different friaries of Spain. All his life, he was animated with an intense love of the Holy Eucharist. In 1897, he was declared patron of all Eucharistic confraternities and congresses. (B) In 1992, the first native of the Sudan was canonized, SISTER JO- SEPHINE BAKHITA ( ). She had been kidnapped and sold into slavery, suffering brutality in many forms, until in 1883 she was sold to an Italian family who treated her kindly and made her a nursemaid and governess. Only when she sought to join the Daughters of Charity in Venice (while accompanying one of her charges at a boarding school), and the family objected, did she discover that slavery was illegal in Italy. (The superior of the religious Order and the Cardinal of Venice had intervened in her defense). She was baptized in 1890 and devoted her life to simple tasks such as sewing, cooking, serving as sacristan and doorkeeper, taking her vows in In her holy simplicity she was an inspiration to all. In her last years she became ill and could not leave her wheelchair. When a visiting bishop asked her what she did all day in her wheelchair, she replied, What do I do? Exactly what you are doing - the will of God. Dates in 2014 are now available. Requesting a Mass intention is a traditional and meaningful way to honor a deceased loved one, or to offer a thoughtful message of sympathy to the bereaved. Special intentions for the living may be requested for one who is ill, as well as to observe special occasions, such as anniversaries and birthdays, or simply in thanksgiving. Mass Intention Offering slips are available on the vestibule table, or call the chapel office weekdays at The Archdiocese of Chicago suggests a donation of $10.
