12 Music Scheme Epiphany The season of Christmas moves on 6 January into its second stage, with the feast of Epiphany. This year the Cathedral will mark Epiphany on Sunday 7 January in the morning, with a Eucharist including the presentation at the altar of the gifts which Scripture tells us the Magi presented to the Holy Family. A week later we have the opportunity to reflect on the themes of Epiphany through Organ Vespers on the Saturday, and then on Sunday 14 January in the drama, music and movement of the third of our processional services of this season. Here we trace the story of Jesus from his birth through until his adulthood, remembering his first miracle and ending with the recommitment of our own Christian lives to the service of God's kingdom. Christmas ends on 2 February with the feast of Candlemas, before we turn our attention to the Cross as we prepare for Lent. Tom Clammer PRECENTOR Sermons at Evensong Beginning on Sunday 7 January there will be a brief homily at Evensong on Sundays. This short reflection, preached between the anthem and the prayers, will almost always be by one of the Cathedral clergy, and will give us an opportunity to reflect on the readings and the season. We will be keeping the feast of The Baptism of Christ at Evensong on 7 January, and the Precentor will preach on that theme. Organ Vespers On Saturday 13 January, instead of Choral Evensong at 1730, there is an opportunity to hear Messiaen s complete organ cycle La Nativité du Seigneur performed as part of evening worship. The nine movements of the work will be woven into the structure of Evening Prayer, enhanced by prayer and readings. La Nativité was completed in 1935, and is one of Messiaen s earlier and more accessible organ works. It draws upon a wide range of religious imagery in celebration of Christ s Nativity, and lovers of our fine Cathedral organ are strongly encouraged to immerse themselves in the kaleidoscopic colours, and to meditate upon these musical and theological offerings in the calm of the Cathedral. The organist is David Halls. There will be two further liturgical performances of Messiaen s organ cycles in On Friday 20 April at 1730, Les Corps Glorieux will be performed as a liturgical cycle for Easter, and on Wednesday 9 May at the later time of 2100, L Ascension will be performed as part of our worship on the Eve of Ascension. The organist for these two cycles is John Challenger. Lenten Compline Two services of Compline are scheduled as part of our worship for Lent this year. The Cathedral Chamber Choir will sing Choral Compline on Wednesday 21 February at (Trinity Chapel), and on Wednesday 21 March, John Challenger will play the organ in a special service of Compline which will feature chorale preludes by J.
