Submissions are subject to approval and space limitations. INFANT BAPTISM: To schedule a Baptism, please contact the Parish Office. Parents are expected to attend a Pre-Baptismal session. The celebration and registration for the Sacrament of Baptism will still be at the individual parishes. MARRIAGE: Dates for Marriages are scheduled only through the priest and only after an initial meeting with the couple. Church law requires a minimum of six months notice before a wedding can be celebrated. In light of the many arrangements for a wedding, the couple should contact the priest as soon as possible after the engagement is announced. INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC: Those wishing to share in the sacramental life of the Catholic Church are invited to contact the Parish Office. This specifically applies to those wishing to be baptized, who have not previously shared in the Eucharist, who have not sought to share the sacrament of Confirmation, or those raised in another faith but now choosing to share our Catholic faith. HOSPITALIZED OR HOMEBOUND: If a parishioner is in the hospital or sick at home, please call the Social Ministry Office to arrange for a pastoral visit. Each hospital has a chaplain for emergencies. PRAYERS FOR THE SICK: Please call the Main Office or Social Ministry Office to request your loved one to be on the Prayer List. Due to HIPPA Regulations, only an immediate family member can make this request. SPONSOR LETTERS: Only active and registered members will be issued a Sponsor Letter. 2 Pastor s Perspective Fr. John R. Rushofsky Pastor jrushofsky@saintsebastianparish.org HOW S IT GOING? Our Grouping 103 is off to a good start, but it was a busy one. The first week we had eight funerals in six days. By my calculations, if we continue at this rate, by the year 2065 we will have buried everyone in our grouping. And if I m not one of them, I will be 114. But seriously, there has been a remarkable spirit of cooperation, although it must be noted that this is being written (10/17) before our first weekend, so we will have to see what that brings. We priests and deacons have been doing a lot of traveling from church to church, but it has been fun meeting new people and learning who does what at each place. Meanwhile, since we have already had so many funerals we are qualified to say that the funeral and bereavement ministry in our grouping offers a wonderful comfort to those who have lost a loved one, and the huge Resurrection Choir is quite spectacular. It is pleasing to see how many people are stepping forward to serve in their own parish or even in another parish in the grouping. So if your unhappiness or anxiety over On Mission has caused you to step aside from a ministry or organization you ve participated in, please reconsider. And as we priests, deacons, and musicians serve in our four parishes, please be patient with us as we try to learn many new names and faces. IN OTHER NEWS: While we are all getting used to different churches, please follow all traffic and parking directions carefully: parking spaces, no-parking spaces, one-way, do not enter, etc. These are meant for your convenience but especially for your safety.speaking of parking, the south wall below St. Sebastian Church (facing the school) is being repaired. God rescues the most vulnerable: the blind the lame mothers those with child. All are brought to safety in the Lord. God smooths their path and quenches their thirst. God guides them and consoles them. Rejoice! As we look around at all four of our beautiful churches today, let us rejoice that God has brought all of us together. WELCOME MRS. GINNY AMBROSE We warmly welcome Mrs. Ginny Ambrose who comes on board this week as our new Assistant Director of Music Ministries for our parish grouping. Ginny comes to us from St. Maria Goretti Parish in Bloomfield, where she has served as Music Director (twice) for a combined total of thirty years. Not only is Ginny a gifted musician and composer, but she excels in choral programming of all styles, particularly in choral programs for young children and youth, which is a very difficult quality to find in a good candidate. Ginny will direct the Contemporary Choir and the Cherub Choir (Grades 1-5), and assist with various liturgies on a rotation around the schedule. We re so glad she s here. Welcome, Ginny! THE HOPE AND PROMISE OF REDEMPTION The prophet Jeremiah prophesies the end of the Babylonian exile. He describes how the weak and sorrowful people now return with joy. These are the scattered people of God: the blind and the lame, the mothers and pregnant women. They shall be led along an easy road so that no one will stumble. The Lord s kindness and mercy are on all these weak and broken people. Here and in Psalm 126 we find the most lovely poetic images of God s love and care for us. Those that sow in tears shall reap rejoicing. Although they go forth weeping, carrying the seed to be sown, they shall come back rejoicing, carrying their sheaves (Psalm 126:5-6). Although God had to punish Israel for their many sins, God never forgot them, scattered as they were, and brings them all back to the land of their ancestors, there to flourish and be joyful again. The LORD has done great things for us; we are glad indeed. - Psalm 126:3 Associates of Sisters of St. Joseph host founder of Hekima Place Kate Fletcher, whose life of service led to the founding of Hekima Place, will speak about Beatitudes on Saturday, November 3, at the annual Memorial Day of Reflection sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph Associates. The program runs from 9:00 AM - 3:00 in the Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse in Baden. Hekima Place in Kenya is a refuge and resource for girls, many of whom have been orphaned due to the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS. A former teacher, lab technician, and nursing home administrator, Kate is a former Sister of the Divine Redeemer. She and her late husband together volunteered extensively to help an impoverished Appalachian community in West Virginia. Shortly after becoming a widow, Kate moved to Nairobi and eventually founded Hekima Place. Cost is $35, which includes lunch. Scholarships are available. Vocations Essay & Poster Contest National Vocations Awareness Week is November 5-9, 2018 and the Vocations Office is sponsoring a poster and essay contest to celebrate. Participants can enter it by drawing or writing about a time that a priest or religious impacted their faith lives. Students in grades 4-8 are invited to draw a poster, either digitally or by hand, on 11x17 poster board or paper. Mail posters to: Vocations Office, St. Paul Seminary, 2900 Noblestown Road, High School students in grades 9-12 are invited to write an essay. The essays should be words, typed, double spaced, and ed in a Microsoft Word document to tsullivan@diopitt.org. All poster and essay submissions are due by November 2. The first, second, and third place winners in each category will receive Amazon gift cards and have their entry printed in The Pittsburgh Catholic Newspaper. 28th Annual Love Walk for the Poor All are invited to participate in Catholic Charities 28th Annual Love Walk for the Poor on Sunday, November 4, New Location - This year s event will begin at St. Peter s Catholic Church on Pittsburgh s North Shore, with Mass at 2:00 with Fr. Michael Ackerman, followed by a one-mile walk to the streets of downtown Pittsburgh, arriving at Catholic Charities in the Cultural District. While the event focuses on youth, all ages are encouraged to attend.
