1 St. Rose of Lima Church 312 Ridgedale Avenue East Hanover, New Jersey First Sunday of Advent December 3, 2017 This weekend we begin the new liturgical year. The Season of Advent as you know comprises of four Sundays. For the first two Sundays we prepare our hearts and minds for the second coming of Christ. For the last two Sundays of Advent we prepare our heart to celebrate the birthday of Christ at Christmas. To truly prepare our hearts we need to find time to peacefully reflect upon the miracle we encounter in Bethlehem and reflect upon our role as living disciples who proclaim God s love in our world. In today s Gospel Jesus reminds us To be watchful, be alert, you do not know when the time will come. I would hope and pray that I would always live in a state of grace and that through frequent confession if I were to die suddenly I would present myself to Jesus my judge with a pure and holy soul. As I mentioned in last week s bulletin, most of us aren t particularly sinful but we are human therefore we are not perfect. This coming Wednesday, December 6 th Fr. Matthew and I will have two priests to help us hear confessions. As always, we will be available from 7:00pm 9:00pm. We have made our Advent/Christmas confession time early in December so that it won t impact the shopping, wrapping and cooking tasks. Do remember our celebration of Christmas will be less profound if our hearts are not cleansed through confession and ready to joyfully celebrate the birth of our risen Savior. So this early Advent season give yourself the gift of true peace; the peace and the courage that comes from Jesus in the Sacrament of Confession. Every year we celebrate Mary s birthday on September 8 th. It is a day to remember Mary s birth through the grace of St. Anne and St. Joachim, her parents, walking with God in loving trust. Going back nine months earlier, we consider that through the grace of God, she was conceived without the stain of sin of Adam. We believe that God decreed that Mary whose womb would be the first tabernacle of Jesus should not have the sin of Adam on her soul. Therefore, unlike every other human being, Mary was born without sin. She was however, totally human, not divine. This coming Thursday, December 7 th I will celebrate the Vigil Mass of the Immaculate Conception at 7:00pm. I have invited and encouraged our 9 th and 10 th graders and their parents to attend this Mass. During the homily I will explain the teachings of the Church with regard to the proclamation of Mary of the Immaculate Conception. On December 8 th, a holy day of obligation, our Masses will be celebrated at 7:00am, 9:00am, 12:10pm and 7:00pm. The Knights of Columbus hosted a wonderful dinner called Pride in Priests on Monday, November 20 th. I was proud to sit with eleven members of our Knights and celebrate the role of the priest in our parishes and the wonderful work our Brothers do. Approximately 460 people attended the dinner. Thanks to all who organized this event. Congratulations to our new altar servers Mario Marrano, Johnny Kinney, Daniela Kozlow, Nicole and Sean Ogwu. A big thanks to Debbie, Jeanne and Sarah who trained them. I encourage families to light the Advent candles on the Advent wreath for the next three weekends of Advent. Please sign up in the Advent book which is placed on the little table on the left as you walk into the church. 5 EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER November 22nd was our Thanksgiving Feast! The children dressed in Native American Indian and Pilgrim attire for this event! Father Matthew came to give the blessing and enjoy some of the delicious goodies that we feasted on. The chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese, apple slices, carrots and an assortment of mini muffins. After the children enjoyed the feast, our music teacher, Mr. Dave joined us and we all sang some Christmas songs. Sacrament of the Sick / Hospital Visits At St. Rose we are strongly committed to the spiritual care of the sick. Because of privacy laws, hospitals and nursing homes are not allowed to release the patient s religious affiliation. Therefore, we must depend on families of our sick parishioners to inform us of their whereabouts and condition. Please notify the parish office of any need for a home or hospital visit. RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a program for people who seek full initiation in the Catholic Church through the reception of the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation, which are received at Easter Vigil.
