1 St. Rose of Lima Church 312 Ridgedale Avenue East Hanover, New Jersey Sixth Sunday of Easter May 21, 2017 What a beautiful honor it was for me to consecrate our parish to Mary of the Immaculate Conception. As we celebrated the 100 th Anniversary of our Blessed Mother s Apparition to the three children in Fatima we call to mind the need to stay close to God especially by frequent confession, weekly Holy Communion, and praying the Rosary. As we look to the world today we see a possible crisis in North Korea which would affect that whole region and possibly even the United States. We must pray constantly that world leaders will dialogue and that through prayer and mutual understanding humankind can live in peace and harmony. The Holy Father s visit to Fatima was indeed memorable. How blessed are we to be under the protective loving care of our Blessed Mother. Congratulations to the Portuguese who last weekend won the European song contest. They, like other European nations, have been participating in this contest for almost fifty years and are thrilled to be the winners. How proud I am of Deacon Kamil. A big thank you to the many parishioners who came to support him by attending his ordination last Saturday. We surround him and the other nine deacons as they prepare for their ultimate goal Ordination to Priesthood in May It was a joy to see Deacon Kamil assist as deacon for the first time last weekend and what a great homily he gave. He worked so hard at the English language and spends a lot of time working at public speaking. It s been a joy having him here on the weekends at St. Rose since last September. Bishop Serratelli met with all the newly ordained deacons Monday to give them their new parish assignments. I m thrilled to tell you that bishop has appointed Deacon Kamil to serve at St. Rose for the next year. Deacon Kamil attends Rutgers Monday through Thursday to perfect his English. He is very happy to be appointed here. I think it s going to be a very good fit. Congratulations to Doris and Giulio who celebrated their 50 th Wedding Anniversary last Saturday evening and renewed their vows during the Mass. Congratulations to Joann and John who also celebrated their 50 th Wedding Anniversary and renewed their vows at the 12:00noon Mass. This coming Thursday, May 25 th, we celebrate the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ into Heaven. On that day He bid us farewell until He would return until the end of time. He commissioned the Apostles, the Disciples and all the faithful to bring the Good News to all. He then ascended to the heavens. We know that Jesus will return in glory at the end of time. We know too that should we die before then, we will meet Him in judgement. Let us try to ensure that our hearts are on fire with the Good News and that we, like many who have gone before us, will live our faith with enthusiasm and joy. This enthusiastic way of living certainly invites others to join us on this wonderful pilgrim journey. Ascension Thursday is of course a holy day of obligation. Masses will be celebrated at 7:00am, 9:00am, 12:10pm and 7:00pm. Father Owen

5 EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER On Wednesday, May 10 th, the children of St. Rose of Lima Early Childhood Center enjoyed Field Day at Lurker Park. Each class participated in several activities planned throughout the morning. Our Traveling Tumblers teacher involved the children in exercises, relay races, and a parachute game. Jack s Petting Zoo was also on hand for pony rides and everyone enjoyed feeding the animals! There was time for each class to enjoy the playground at Lurker Park and an Italian Ice treat. What a Fabulous Day! NEWS FROM ROME If Holy Thursday night into Good Friday was a time of quiet and peaceful prayer within the Holy Sepulcher, Good Friday evening was anything but. However, there was a special and unique liturgy that took place, the funeral procession of Jesus Christ. This ancient liturgy takes place within the Sepulcher, but it happens when the Church is packed full with people and the commotion of all of the people there. What is beautiful though is that we remember what happened in that place 2000 years ago, processing with a crucifix. We began in the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, where we heard the first part of the Passion, and then a short homily about it, we continued making a couple of stops along the way, each time with a blessing, a gospel, and a homily, always in a different language. We then finally made it to Calvary, the real spot where Christ was crucified. And there, the truly unique part happened, Jesus is taken off of the cross. This process is done slowly and reverently, first the corpus, the body, is wrapped with a cloth, so he won t fall right off. And then, one by one the spikes are hammered and pulled out using pliers, as well as the crown of thorns, each one being presented to the people as the tools used for Christ s passion. Further, the arms of the corpus are articulated, so they each fall to the side when the spike is removed. To witness this in front of you, reminds you of the sacrifice God made for us out of love; your heart cannot help but be moved with sorrow. The body is then gently removed from the cross, and wrapped in the same cloth to be brought to the anointing stone, where Mary and the others would have anointed our Lord. Here at the stone, the Bishop anoints the corpus, with all of the oils, the myrrh, and the frankincense, just as His body would have been treated. What is incredible is that since the stone is on the ground, everyone is pushing to see, and while those of us right around the body pray silently, the Sepulcher is still filled with the constant rumbling of thousands of people. There are so many people, that unless you are in the procession, it is impossible to really move from one spot to another, but everyone s faith pushes them to get as close to the stone as possible. After the body is anointed though, we go to the last place, the tomb. It is finally at the tomb that we lay Christ s body, but we don t wait. We say the prayers and hear from the Gospel, but we continue to move, since although Christ had to suffer for us, and did so willingly out of love, we are a resurrection people. We live this resurrection even now as we continue throughout Easter season. I pray that all of you continue to feel the blessings of our Risen Lord in your life. Parents are welcome to have the Baptism celebrated either at a week-end Mass or at the Liturgy of Baptism at 1:15. To make arrangements for Baptism please call Father Owen or Fr. Matthew. Godparents must be confirmed and be active members of the church and attend Mass regularly. Sacrament of Reconciliation Every Saturday at 8:15 8:45 and 4:45 5:15 (or by appointment with Fr. Any Catholic couple needs approximately a year to prepare for the Sacrament of Marriage, which includes sessions with the Priest celebrating the marriage and attendance at Pre-Cana conferences. Sacrament of the Sick / Hospital Visits At St. Rose we are strongly committed to the spiritual care of the sick. Because of privacy laws, hospitals and nursing homes are not allowed to release the patient s religious affiliation. Therefore, we must depend on families of our sick parishioners to inform us of their whereabouts and condition. Please notify the parish office of any need for a home or hospital visit. RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a program for people who seek full initiation in the Catholic Church through the reception of the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation, which are received at Easter Vigil.
