1 St. Rose of Lima Church 312 Ridgedale Avenue East Hanover, New Jersey Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 22, 2017 This is our big car raffle weekend. At 1:15pm I will be calling the lucky winner of the car. A big thank you to everyone who has worked so hard on this major fundraiser. To the many people who sold tickets in the car booth and to the many parishioners who sold extra tickets to friends, family and work colleagues thank you. I m looking forward to announcing the winner and to affirming the many hands that worked together to make this fundraiser a success. As you are aware, St. Rose has joined our diocese for the pilgrimage to DC on this Saturday, October 21 st. We have a full bus of pilgrims. I look forward to writing about this in next week s bulletin. I m excited to begin the Rite of Catholic Initiation of Adults (RCIA) sessions Sunday, November 5 th at 3:00pm in the parish offices. During that session the candidates and I will together look at a schedule that suits the group so that people who have busy lives will be able to participate and grow in our faith. I look forward to giving instruction to adults who seek Baptism, Holy Communion, and/or Confirmation. If you know anyone who is not Baptized, a Protestant who would like to become Catholic, a Catholic who has never made Holy Communion, or a Catholic who has never made Confirmation, please have them contact me directly and I will be glad to have them join our group. We began our Bereavement Ministry on October 2 nd. We have the largest group ever This is a very sacred time where we, under the guidance of God, process feelings of loss, sadness, anger and sometimes the inability to move forward. Death is the most normal part of our lives but for those of us left behind, the most painful. Our group, under the direction of Stephanie, Debbie, Anabela and me, help to bring to those who are bereaved, the sense of hope, purpose and joy that we as Catholics receive from Jesus who reminds us of the Lord s plan for humankind. We certainly understand that we are not born to live eternally on earth but while living here we use our gifts with generosity, celebrate our love for God and hope to attain the Kingdom of Heaven for all eternity upon death. Please keep our Bereavement Group in prayer during these days. On Tuesday, October 10 th I celebrated the Funeral Mass for our beloved parishioner, Andy Blue. Andy was a strong Catholic man of faith, an usher and a Knight of Columbus. These past many years have been difficult as his health and memory faded. Our prayers surround his wonderful wife Winnie who with great devotion assisted him throughout their wonderful marriage and particularly during his time of failing health. Winnie is a devoted Rosarian and I know that the Blessed Mother, to whom she has great devotion, will walk with her during these early difficult days. Father Owen

Brochures in parish office. MY PILGRIMAGE TO FATIMA By Anabela Rossi I had the privilege of joining the pilgrims of St. Rose in Fatima, Portugal, which was my first pilgrimage with Fr. Owen. I am Portuguese and had been to Fatima many times as a child when I would visit my grandmother in the summers, but I knew this time would be different. I still remember the same images as my childhood visits there, the people walking on their knees in sacrifice, the magnificent Sanctuary of the basilica and the capelinha where Our Lady appeared to the three shepherd children. There the rosary is prayed in five different languages every night followed by a beautiful candlelight procession. What was different, however, was experiencing all of these things with Fr. Owen, Seminarian Alex and the people of my community. From the moment the bus pulled up to the hotel, I was greeted so warmly by one and all. There was an immediate spirit of love and connection between all of the pilgrims, despite our age differences and in my case not knowing most of them. This should not have come as a surprise as we were all there to learn about and experience the message of Fatima, but to witness it, was extraordinary. The days were balanced with time for prayer, time for sightseeing and time for the sharing of faith and fellowship which usually included a lot of laughter! One of the things that stood out most for me was Fr. Owen celebrating Mass daily in the different churches on our itinerary. There was truly something special to be in these historical churches celebrating the gift of the Mass together. Another highlight was when Alex led us in the Stations of the Cross in front of the sanctuary. It was so moving and emotional because he made it so relatable to our own daily lives. Alex truly has a gift and I iknow he will make an amazing priest. This pilgrimage was unforgettable and I feel like I gained not only spiritual graces, but also a new group of friends. Thank you to Fr. Owen and Alex for the blessing of their spiritual leadership. Thank you also to Stephanie for her time and dedication in planning and executing these spiritual journeys, which are amazing opportunities to share ou Catholic faith. 5 EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER Miss Lorie s Class began their unit on the pumpkin life cycle. We discussed the similarities and differences between how apples grow and how a pumpkin grows. We carved our pumpkin and pulled out the insides. We easel painted our own pumpkin for our pumpkin patch! Although our trip was postponed, we were busy investigating our pumpkins and in our STEM Journals, we estimated the number of seeds in our pumpkin and created a graph for our math lesson. We also did an experiment to see if our mini pumpkin would sink or float. In the next few weeks, we will be learning about bats and spiders! What a fun month to be in school! This week in Miss Evelyn s Pre-K class, we finished up our unit on fire safety. We reviewed all of the safety rules we learned last week and we made fire helmets and donned them while we sang "I'm A Little Fire Fighter". Although we were disappointed that the fire chief could not visit us, we said a prayer for him and we look forward to seeing him another time. We had our first music class with Mr. Dave this week! We sang lots of songs about fall and Halloween and danced with autumn leaves! In religion, we read The Rainbow Fish which taught us about kindness. We created rainbow fish for our religion bulletin board, each with it's own shiny scale, to remind us of the value of friendship and sharing. We began a new unit on pumpkins this week. Because our visit to the farm was postponed until (10/20), we created our own patch of pumpkins using different shades of orange paint that we each mixed for ourselves! Next week we will continue learning about pumpkins and the pumpkin life cycle! Miss Casey's class finished learning about pumpkins this week. They practiced identifying all of the parts of a pumpkin and talked about how they grow. Next week, we will carve a pumpkin to see what is inside; we will even get to touch it. Keeping with the fall theme, students decorated trees with fall leaves that spelled out their names. We are practicing recognizing the letters in our names. We also celebrated Fire Safety Week. We learned about how to stay safe when there is a fire and what number to call if we need help. Students learned about what firefighters do and what they use to stay safe. We even got to pretend to be firefighters! In Miss Donna s Pre School class, we created colorful crosses this week. We are learning to pray before we eat our snack each day. Our music teacher Mr. Dave sang with us and played the guitar. He taught us a beautiful song about the falling leaves. We all love pretend play in our learning centers! We are now accepting applications for our 2017/2018 school year. If you are interested in applying, or for a tour of our facility, please call You can also cfreeman@stroseacad.org. If you are interested in our newest toddler program (12 months to 21/2 years old), please call for more information and speak with our Director, Lorie Agrifolio for more details! If anyone is interested in working in our after-care program please Lorie Agrifolio at lagrifolio@stroseacad.org. The hours would be approximately from 2-6 pm.
