1 St. Rose of Lima Church 312 Ridgedale Avenue East Hanover, New Jersey Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 29, 2017 As I think of the car raffle I consider with great fondness our biggest car raffle champion, the late Mario Marrano. The car raffle was truly his baby and I m proud to say his legacy is continuing through his wife Anna and his daughter Jeanne. A big thank you to everyone who helped in any way with the car raffle - to Bruno Barillari who, with the Parish Council decided upon the car; to Jeanne Taylor and Anne Marie Gillespie who coordinated the ticket booth; to our staff who handled everything behind the scenes; to Jim Giordano and his team of counters who faithfully counted and reported on the ticket sales weekly; to the many volunteers who, with great devotion, sold tickets in the ticket booth; and the volunteers who folded all the ticket stubs. Thanks to Angelo of Esposito s who encouraged many of his faithful customers to participate in the car raffle sales and to Sorrento s who are so kind to our ticket sellers. Many thanks to the Leonardis family who, as always, covered the cost of printing the raffle tickets. Thank you to our parishioners and our guests who returned their sold tickets. As you are aware, the car cost $41, After expenses incurred - mailings, licensing, etc. I m thrilled to tell you we made a profit of $43, Congratulations to the winner of the car - Edward Castner. Our pilgrimage to the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C. was a day to be remembered. Our bus journey there and back was pleasurable, prayerful and fun. Our Mass at which Bishop Serratelli presided was holy and joyful. We prayed for all of our parishioners and we appreciate the graces and blessings we have received so generously from the Lord. Wednesday, November 1 st is the Feast of All Saints and a holyday of obligation. Masses will be celebrated at 7:00am, 9:00am, 12:10pm and 7:00pm. I will host a teaching session from 6:00pm 7:00pm for our 9 th grade parents and their children in the church on how the saints impact our lives. Anyone who is interested in learning about the saints, please feel welcome to join us. Thursday, November 2 nd is the Feast of All Souls. This is a day when all Catholics should remember our beloved dead. In fact, the month of November is set aside to remember the dead and to pray for the souls in purgatory. Mass will be celebrated at 9:00am and 7:00pm. At the 7:00pm Mass I will also remember all who have been buried from St. Rose this past year. All parishioners are welcome to join us. Congratulations to Sean and Nicole Onyeka who made First Holy Communion at the 12:15pm Mass last Sunday. A big thank you to Dot and Gerri who prepared them. I had a lovely visit with Fr. Hubert last Monday evening at his parish in West Milford. As you know, Fr. Hubert is a wonderful priest and is bringing the parish back to life. He got a little dog and her name is Mollie. The dog is bilingual! I m sure they will visit us in East Hanover soon. Father Owen

Brochures in parish office. My Spain & Fatima Pilgrimage Experience Gricel Comesanas I'd like to begin by saying that I always had a special connection and great love to our blessed Mother Mary and when Father Owen announced he was going to lead a pilgrimage to Lourdes in 2015, I was thrilled with anticipation. I always wanted to visit that Holy site where our Lady appeared to Bernadette. I've read of great miracles and healing through our Lady of Lourdes' intercession, and I wanted to take my daughter, Natalie, who has diabetes since the age of 8 years old, in addition to other auto immune disorders, there for healing. She came along, somehow reluctantly, because she was then 18 years old and our group of travelers were older. She ended up having a good time and though her physical illnesses remain, while at Lourdes, she received spiritual healing. While at Lourdes I prayed intensely for her health, not knowing that I already had Stage 3 colon cancer. I was diagnosed 2 months after returning to the U.S. After hearing the diagnosis, all I could think of and remember was when I went to Our Lady of Lourdes and bathing in those miraculous waters. I prayed to her trustingly and put all my worries and fears in her Immaculate Heart. She led me to the right doctors. She guided them to do the best for me. I started a course of chemotherapy and radiation to shrink the tumor prior to the surgery, along with great dosages of prayers from family and friends. When the treatment ended, the doctors allowed me to rest before the surgery. When they checked again to see how much the tumor had shrunk, the tumor was no longer there! I was cured before the surgery through Mary's intercession! I still was advised to have the surgery in order to resect the area where the cancerous tumor had been in order to decrease the rate of recurrence and to send it to pathology for staging. The surgeon was marveled about the way the procedure went and how well everything looked. The only thing left was a scar where the tumor used to be. She was very happy and surprised that the pathology report came back as "Stage 0" - no cancerous cells! The oncologist admitted that they weren't sure how to proceed in cases like mine, but he advised to complete treatment for the initial diagnosis of Stage 3b. Every time I received Chemo, I prayed to Mary and Jesus to bless the medicines going into my body and to bless those administering it. I'm now cancer free and very grateful to our Lady of Lourdes' intercession. I have an opportunity to enjoy my daughters, family and friends longer and more time to know, love and serve God. This year's Pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela and Fatima was my chance to thank our blessed Mother and God for all the graces and blessings granted. First visit was to Santiago where St. James is buried. I learned that the first Marian Apparition was to St. James while Mary was still alive living in Jerusalem and St. James was then Zaragoza, Spain evangelizing in the year 40. She appeared to him as Our Lady del Pilar. It was truly an amazing heavenly experience to be in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, his burial site, St. James' embrace, the beautiful mass at the cathedral and the Botafumeiro! We visited many churches and beautiful towns and villages on the way to Fatima. One of my favorite was the Church of Eucharistic Miracle in Santarem, Portugal. Father Owen celebrated Mass there and we were able to see the actual Bleeding Host. Fatima was the highlight. Our hotel was right across the street from the Basilica and Apparition Chapel. When we first went in, I saw the image of Our Lady of Fatima in a very simple place. I knelt down and I prayed and thanked her (not knowing yet that this was the actual site that Mary appeared to Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco, but I felt her presence. I felt an immense flow of peace, love and mercy embracing me. The spiritual experience in Fatima was amazing and not easy to describe. She touched my heart and soul in the most beautiful and profound way. I also liked the fact that the chapel is always opened so I was able to cross the street and visit Our Lady of Fatima even late at night when it was quiet. They also had Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration in the new basilica to visit, at any time, Jesus exposed in the Blessed Sacrament. The international rosary, the candlelight procession shared with thousands of people from so many different places, all united in the same faith and devotion to Mary, was something I will never forget. Congratulations to Sean & Nicole who made First Holy Communion on Sunday, October 22nd. My connection and love for Mary continues to grow more with each pilgrimage as I get to know her better. Since I visited Lourdes, I was consecrated to Mary. I pray the rosary every day. She brought me closer to her son, Jesus, in Eucharistic Adoration. I know that Mary, in her mother's love, wants the best for me. I put myself entirely and trusting in her hands; knowing that I may not get exactly what I pray for, but I'm sure to obtain what's best for me and the graces that I need through her intercession.

5 EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER Miss Lorie s Class focused on spiders. These eight legged arachnids were so much fun to learn about. We learned what spiders eat, where they live, how they catch their food, and which ones to stay away from! The children all easel painted their own spider and we made a class booklet that resembles The Very Busy Spider, by Eric Carle. On Friday, we were able to go on our field trip and the children had a blast! Miss Evelyn s Class had Pumpkin time!! This week we learned all about pumpkins. We talked about the lifecycle of a pumpkin and then observed and explored the external parts of a pumpkin (shell, stem). We hypothesized what the inside of our pumpkin would look like and how many seeds it would have and then we cut into it and discovered what was inside - gooey, slimy, yucky, sticky pulp, flesh and 681 seeds! The highlight of our week was our trip to Brook Hollow Farm where we fed farm animals, went on a hayride and got to pick our very own pumpkins!! What an exciting end to a great week!! We are now accepting applications for our 2017/2018 school year. If you are interested in applying, or for a tour of our facility, please call You can also cfreeman@stroseacad.org. If you are interested in our newest toddler program (12 months to 21/2 years old), please call for more information and speak with our Director, Lorie Agrifolio for more details! If anyone is interested in working in our after-care program please Lorie Agrifolio at lagrifolio@stroseacad.org. The hours would be approximately from 2-6 pm. Great for a college student looking to gain experience working with children! Miss Casey's class finished learning about pumpkins. On Monday, we took a trip to the pumpkin patch; we took a hay ride, walked through a corn maze. picked pumpkins, and climbed on hay bale. We opened up the top of a pumpkin to see what was inside; we got to touch the pulp and seeds. We learned the "5 Little Pumpkin" song and played a pumpkin memory game. After we were done, Miss Casey helped us carve a face to make a jack-o-lantern. With Halloween coming soon, the students learned a poem about little witches and made finger puppets to act out the poem. We also made haunted houses to share with our families but made sure not to make them too scary! All of these exciting activities were summed up in our religion lesson: God Made the World. We know that God made everything big and small for all of us! In Miss Donna s class, we had our class trip to the pumpkin farm. The children not only picked a pumpkin, they walked through a corn maze and a spider web. They ran through an obstacle course and had a wonderful story time. It was the first class trip on a bus ride for most of the children. The children had fun times with magnetic blocks, play dough and building blocks. After listening to the story Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, we focused on the first letter of each child's name. Some of the children started a collage in the shape of their first letter.
