3 A Message from: Sister Mary Alyce September MARCH 17, 16, Ten days of Lent are behind us already. Have you tried to change your heart in any way during this past week and a half? For some reason, I was so moved by the liturgies on the weekend of March 2 and 3 that I can t get them off my mind. I saw people in church who had been away during the cold winter months. Attendance seemed fuller than the previous weeks and the music, prayer responses and singing sounded so animated and jubilant that I actually stopped singing at one point to take it all in. I know, you say, each mass is supposed to be that way and I know that in my mind but in reality it isn t. So I ask, what made those two weekend masses so moving, for me at least? Maybe it was the Mardi Gras anticipation on Saturday and the Mardi Gras after celebration on Sunday. Maybe it was my personal reflection on how far Saint Luke Parish has come in the past 18 months that I have been here as the Parish Leader. Maybe it was the fact that we have many liturgical ministers who take their roles seriously and who minister from the heart whether they are greeting people at the door, collecting offering baskets, approaching the altar so reverently to distribute the Eucharist, singing in the choir or serving mass so attentively (added to the fact that we have a number of new altar servers to carry on this important role at liturgy). I heard and saw children and grown-ups singing and listening and standing and sitting at appropriate times. Today s gospel of the Transfiguration of Jesus (Luke 9: 28-36) speaks directly to this point. Why were the apostles able to see a radiant Jesus even though they had been with him for three years? Because they saw with new eyes, too. They were touched by the divine in a way that made the human signs and symbols and person of Jesus take on a transcendent meaning. They couldn t fully understand it but they knew it when they saw it. I don t know why those two liturgies were so moving for me but I knew it when I saw and heard it. That s what the time of Lent can do for us. For the next three Sundays at 10:00 a.m. mass, Dawn Marie Estrate and Julianna Bresko, our catechumens, will participate in the ritual of the Three Scrutinies in preparation for their Baptism at the Easter Vigil. Historically, the scrutinies took place as the catechumens conduct was scrutinized by the priest to determine if their conduct was becoming of a soon-to-be-baptized individual. In effect, this has already been done by their sponsors in the Rite of Election on March 10. The ritual has been revised over the years to reflect not only the scrutinies but also the exorcism of spirits that might deter the catechumens from following Jesus, followed by a period of silent prayer and litany for the catechumens as a sign of the congregation s willingness to support the newly baptized and finally by the laying on of hands. We who are baptized have already been clothed with Christ; the catechumens have not yet been reborn as new creations. That is why those who have already been baptized are able to pray for the Elect with such fervor. Fr. Keehner had surgery on Friday, March 15. He will be recuperating for a few weeks. Please keep him in your prayers. Until next time..sister Mary Alyce A Note from Fr. Keehner: Brothers and Sisters in Christ: By the time you read this note, I will have undergone surgery and will hopefully be on the road to a full recovery from the illness which sidelined me in November and December. Please pray for me that I am able to return to my duties at both St. Christine and St. Luke parishes in a timely manner. I ask that you not try to visit me or call me in the hospital or during the first week or two of my recovery at home. Know that I will be in the care of my brother and sister and my dog Arwen, and that they will take very good care of me as they did after I was released from the hospital in December. My hope is that at the very latest, I will be back at the altar, celebrating Mass in time for Holy Week. Know that I am truly grateful for your prayers and support. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. John Keehner Please pray for our Christian Initiation Catechumens, Julianna Bresko and Dawn Estrate as they continue their Catholic faith formation sessions that will end at the Easter Vigil on Saturday, April 20th.

4 STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT: I am the Lord who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land as a possession. (Genesis 15:7) St. Luke Parish has been asked to join together with parishes throughout the Diocese of Youngstown in offering our support to the 2019 Annual Bishop s Appeal. Our financial need is $4.2 million. The Saint Luke Parish goal this year is $65, There are many ways in which you can participate. Please PRAY for the success of the Annual Bishop s Appeal. Your prayers are meaningful and critical to our success as a Church family. DONATE to the Appeal. VOLUNTEER your time and talents to any of the ministries of the Church. Use the response card you received in the mail OR use an envelope found in the narthex to respond. Please submit a response card or envelope even if you are unable to make a gift of any dollar amount. Your response will count towards our parish participation goal. We ask every family to prayerfully participate in the Annual Appeal. If you use WeShare for your donation, Saint Luke will send a list of WeShare contributors to the Bishop's Appeal office at the diocese. You do not need to complete a card or an envelope. Thank you in advance for your reflection and generous response. COLLECTION REPORTS FOR March 10, 2019 Sunday amount needed to meet budget... $12, Sunday Collection... $7, WeShare Sunday Collection... $ Loose Money... $ Children s Envelopes... $5.00 Red Envelope (including WeShare)... $ Total... $8, VISION Just as the Lord gave Abraham, Moses and the Israelites a land to possess, He has also given each of us a home. Whether your home is grand or humble, it is a gift from God. Abraham prepared a great sacrifice to the Lord in gratitude for the home God gave him. How do you show your gratitude to God for the home He has given you? Do you make a sacrifice of any kind? Do you return any of your finances to God, investing equally in your eternal home just as you invest in your earthly home? VOCATIONS: This is my chosen Son, listen to him. Is our Lord asking you to follow him in tending His flock as a priest, deacon, sister or brother? If this call is in your heart, contact Fr. Christopher Luoni at (330) or by cluoni@youngstowndiocese.org. That our priests, who bring us to the mountain of Christ at every Mass and feed us with His transforming love in the Holy Eucharist, will be strengthened in their life and vocation, we pray to the Lord. A Family Perspective by Bud Ozar Jesus went up to the mountain to pray and he was changed. Prayer has the power to change us. This lent set aside a few minutes each day to pray for members of your family. Pray before each meal and if you are married, spend five minutes in prayer together. Something to think about this week Do things for others not because of who they are or what they do in return, but because of who you are. -Mother Teresa SAINT LUKE BOCCE LEAGUE will meet on Tuesday, March 19th at 6pm at the Fireplace. On Wednesdays of Lent, we will have our Soup Suppers in the Martha and Mary Room, beginning at 6:00 p.m. Why not volunteer to bring a pot of soup or a loaf of bread to share. Bring the family, your place settings, and put the money saved on dinner in your Rice Bowl. CRS RICE BOWL: Encounter Annet: In Uganda, we encounter Annet and her family, children forced to flee violence, searching for stability. How are we called to welcome the stranger in our midst? SAINT ANTHONY NOVENA: A Novena in Roman Catholic practice is a period of time specifically put aside to pray for particular needs, asking God s direction and help in those needs. The first Novena is rooted in sacred scripture, in the Acts of the Apostles, as the Apostles and Mary the Mother of Jesus waited and prayed together in the upper room after Christ s ascension into heaven until the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. The Latin word Novena means nine and refers to that prayerful waiting of nine days for the outpouring of God s spirit. Saint Anthony of Padua, the Franciscan priest who served the poor, challenged the corrupt, preached the Gospel with power and by God s grace worked miracles of conversion and healing, passed into eternal life on Tuesday, June 13th, 1231A.D. and so instead of nine days, a novena in honor of Saint Anthony is held for thirteen Tuesdays. Our Saint Anthony Novena this year begins on Tuesday, March 19th. Bring a specific intention and focus on it in prayer with Saint Anthony for thirteen Tuesdays and trust that God will answer in God s mysterious but perfect way! The Novena will be held in Saint Luke Church in the morning after the 8am Mass and in Saint Charles Church in the evening after the 6pm Mass. Pease come!

Born in Baptism and sustained by the celebration of the Eucharist, we embrace our life in Christ through prayer and sacrament, service and outreach, proclamation of the Word and formation in faith. Guided by the Holy Spirit and motivated by our love of God and of all people, we are both sign and an instrument of the Kingdom of Promise. Our unique blessing and gift is that we are a parish family which creates a warm and welcoming worship environment and participates fully in the planning and celebration of the Liturgy.
