3 A Message from: September December 16, 2018 Sister Mary Alyce Your kindness should be known to all (Phil.4:5) The reflection that follows was written by Fr. James McKarns, a retired priest of the Diocese of Youngstown. He is the pastor emeritus of Saint Paul Church in North Canton. Fr. McKarns has written several books on spirituality and has had his words published in many national publications. Fr. McKarns writes: There is no substitute for kindness. When we offer kind acts and words to others, we may forget about doing these good actions after a while. However, when someone does a kindhearted deed for us, we may remember that for a lifetime. Kindness is an attractive and precious virtue that is recognized as a sacred value in many cultures and religions. In our society today, there is an urgent need for cordial kindness to be reawakened in our conduct so that this vital quality will enable people to bond together with cooperative understanding. I recently read that many colleges are now emphasizing kindness on applications for admission. On this third Sunday of Advent the liturgy calls us to rejoice in the upcoming annual celebration of when Jesus was born to be our Savior. His love and undiminished kindness to us will be remembered for an earthly lifetime, and beyond. This is my reflection on Fr. McKarns writing: We often ask the question, What needs to happen in order to change the world? Sometimes this a rhetorical question but in reality each of us has the power to bring about change to make the Kingdom of God a reality in today s world. The ecological, social, economic, moral, spiritual and other faces of society need to be touched by human kindness. The gospel of Matthew (25: 35-40) shares very practical ways of gauging our response to the needs of today:...when I was hungry, you gave me to eat; when I was thirsty you gave me to drink, naked and you clothed me; sick, lonely or in prison (drugs, addiction, depression, homelessness, etc.) and you visited. Whenever you did it for one of the least, you did it for me. The response to our parish Giving Tree is evidence that many of us have taken this challenge to heart. In the name of all who will receive your gifts, thank you for your kindness and response to the needs of our brothers and sisters, especially the children, in our local community. A special thank you to Sonny Cascarelli for transporting the gifts to Saint Edward s for distribution. Last Saturday evening and this weekend after the 4:30 Mass the gift of music was shared by the Youngstown Community Concert Band, The Power of Praise musicians and the Saint Luke Parish choir. For about an hour each evening, the cares and concerns of the world were placed on hold while our hearts were lifted in the spirit of Christmas, a spirit of the love and kindness of the Kingdom. Thank you to these groups for their gifts of time and talent. Please note that Mass on Wednesday, December 19 is at Father Chidi will be available for confessions following the mass. Father Coulter will be available after the 4:30 pm. mass on Dec. 22 for individual confessions. There is a Communal Penance Service at Saint Charles Church at 3:00 p.m. today, Dec.16. 5 Advent at Saint Luke WEDNESDAY EVENING MASSES: Father Chidi will be celebrating Mass with us on this Wednesday evening at 6pm in the Chapel. Father will be available following Masses to hear private confessions in the reconciliation room. COMMUNAL PENANCE SERVICE: St. Luke Parish will not have a Communal Penance Service here. However, there will be a Communal Service at Immaculate Heart of Mary on Sunday, December16th at 2pm. There will also be a Communal Penance Service at St. Charles Borromeo on Sunday, December 16th at 3pm. THE GIVING TREE, sponsored by Catholic Charities and the Saint Luke Social Concerns Committee, has been placed in the church. Today is your last day to return your wrapped presents with the tags attached. If you are purchasing a gift card as a present for the giving tree please do not leave it in the narthex. CHARLES BORROMEO PARISH: Inspire your Advent, attend Morning Breakfast Speaker Series on Wednesday Mornings at 7:40am in the St. Matthew/Mark Room. The Ursuline Band and Choir will host a Christmas Concert on December 19th beginning at 7pm in the Deibel Morley Arts Center. A reception will immediately follow.
