(Luke 22:26) Bishop: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid, cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Our Lord s Summary of the Law Bishop: Our Lord Jesus Christ said: The Lord our God is the only Lord, and you shall love the Lord your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first commandment. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. This is a new commandment I give you: love one another, as I have loved you. People: Lord have mercy upon us, and write all these your laws on our hearts we pray. (Short silence.) Heavenly Father, we confess that we have sinned against thee and our neighbor. We have walked in darkness rather than light; we have named the name of Christ, but have not followed him. Have mercy upon us, we beseech thee; for the sake of Jesus Christ forgive us all our sins; bring us to true repentance; cleanse our hearts and consciences by thy Holy Spirit: that we may receive power to forgive others and to serve thee in newness of life, to the glory of thy holy name. Amen.

Bishop: Almighty God have mercy upon you, forgive you all your sins, and bring you to eternal life. (The Bishop and people sit.) Presenters: Right Reverend Father in God, we present Rebecca Konshak and Bert Copeland to be admitted to the Sacred Order of Deacons. Bishop: Have they been selected in accordance with the Canons of this Church? And do you believe their manner of life to be suitable to the exercise of this ministry? Presenters: We certify to you that they have satisfied the requirements of the Constitution and Canons of Lweru and Norms of the Confraternity and we believe them to be qualified for this order. Bishop: The Canons require that no one may be ordained a Deacon in the Church until such person has subscribed without reservation to the Oath of Conformity. It is also required that each Ordinand subscribe without reservation to the Oath of Canonical Obedience. In the presence of this congregation, I now charge you to make your solemn declaration of these oaths. Each Ordinand: I do believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be the Word of God and to contain all things necessary to salvation; and therefore I hold myself bound to conform my life and ministry thereto, and do solemnly engage to conform to the Doctrine, Discipline and Worship of Christ as this Church has received them. I, [Ordinand s Name], do swear by almighty God that I will pay true and canonical obedience in all things lawful and honest to the Bishop of Lweru and his successors: So help me God. (The Ordinand then signs the Oath of Conformity and the Oath of Canonical Obedience in the sight of all present.) (All stand.) The Bishop: Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, you know the importance of this ministry, and the weight of your responsibility in presenting Rebecca Konshak and Bert Copeland for ordination to the Sacred Order of Deacons. Therefore, if any of you know of any impediment or crime because of which we should not proceed, come forward now, and make it known. (If no objection is made, the Bishop continues.) Bishop: Is it your will that Rebecca be ordained a Deacon? People: It is. Bishop: Will you uphold her in her ministry? People: We will. Bishop: Is it your will that Bert be ordained a Deacon? People: It is. Bishop: Will you uphold him in his ministry? People: We will. Bishop: In peace let us pray to the Lord. The Litany for Ordinations (Please remain standing. The Bishop shall, with the clergy and people present, say the Litany for Ordinations. The Ordinands shall either kneel or lie prostrate during the Litany.) Bishop: God the Father People: Have Mercy on us. Bishop: God the Son People: Have Mercy on us. Bishop: God the Holy Spirit People: Have Mercy on us. Bishop: Holy Trinity, one God People: Have Mercy on us. Bishop: We pray to you, Lord Christ. People: Lord hear our prayer. Bishop: For the Holy Church of God, that it may be filled with truth

Bishop: For Godfrey, Cyril, Peter, Michael Vitahlis, Kevin and Gerald, bishops given to our care, and for all bishops, priests, and deacons, that they may be filled with your love, may hunger for truth, and may thirst after righteousness, we pray to you, O Lord. Bishop: For Rebecca and Bert, chosen Deacons in your Church, we pray to you, O Lord, Bishop: That they may faithfully fulfill the duties of their ministries, build up your Church, and glorify your Name, we pray to you, O Lord. Bishop: For the mission of the Church, that in faithful witness it may preach the Gospel to the ends of the earth, we pray to you, O Lord. Bishop: For those who do not yet believe, and for those who have lost their faith, that they may receive the light of the Gospel, we pray to you, O Lord. Bishop: For the peace of the world, that a spirit of respect and forbearance may grow among nations and peoples, we pray to you, O Lord. Bishop: For those in positions of public trust especially for our President and all who hold elected office, that they may serve justice and promote the dignity and freedom of every person, we pray to you, O Lord. Bishop: For a blessing upon all human labor, and for the right use of the riches of creation, that the world may be freed from poverty, famine, and disaster, we pray to you, O Lord. Bishop: For the poor, the persecuted, the sick, and all who suffer; for refugees, prisoners, and all who are in danger; that they may be relieved and protected, we pray to you, O Lord. Bishop: For ourselves; for the forgiveness of our sins, and for the

grace of the Holy Spirit to amend our lives, we pray to you, O Lord. Bishop: For all who have died in the communion of your Church, and those whose faith is known to you alone, that, with all the saints, they may have rest in that place where there is no pain or grief, but life eternal, we pray to you, O Lord. Bishop: Rejoicing in the fellowship of, and all the saints, let us commend ourselves and one another and all our life to Christ our God. People: To you, O Lord our God. Receiving the Word of God Bishop: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you, Bishop. Bishop: Let us pray. O God of unchangeable power and eternal light: Look favorably on your whole Church, that wonderful and sacred mystery; by the effectual working of your providence, carry out in tranquillity the plan of salvation; let the whole world see and know that things which were being cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new, and that all things are being brought to their perfection by him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Lector: Hear the word of God as it is written in Jeremiah 1:4-9. This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Lector: Hear the word of God as it is written in Psalm 119: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Psalm 119:33-40 BCP, p Teach me, O LORD, the way of your statutes, * and I will observe it to the end. 34 Give me understanding, that I may keep your law * and observe it with my whole heart. 35 Lead me in the path of your commandments, * for I delight in it. 36 Turn my heart to your decrees, * and not to selfish gain. 37 Turn my eyes from looking at vanities; * give me life in your ways. 38 Confirm to your servant your promise, * which is for those who fear you. 39 Turn away the disgrace that I dread, * for your ordinances are good. 40 See, I have longed for your precepts; * in your righteousness give me life. Lector: Hear the word of God as it is written in 2 Corinthians 4:1-6. This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. (All stand.) Lector: Hear the holy Gospel, as it is written in Luke 22:24-27.

People: Glory be to you, O Lord. Lector: This is the Gospel of Christ. People: Praise be to you, O Christ, for your holy Gospel. Sermon Rev. Chris Bollegar The Examination of the Candidate (All are seated except the Ordinands, who stand before the Bishop.) Bishop: Deacons are called to work with the Bishop and the Deacons with whom they serve as heralds of Christ's kingdom. They are to proclaim the gospel in word and deed, as agents of God's purposes of love. They are to serve the community in which they are set, bringing to the Church the needs and hopes of all the people. They are to work with their fellow members in searching out the poor and weak, the sick and lonely and those who are oppressed and powerless, reaching into the forgotten corners of the world, that the love of God may be made visible. Deacons share in the pastoral ministry of the Church and in leading God's people in worship. They preach the word and bring the needs of the world before the Church in intercession. They accompany those searching for faith and bring them to baptism. They assist in administering the sacraments; they distribute communion and minister to the sick and housebound. Deacons are to seek nourishment from the Scriptures; they are to study them with God's people, that the whole Church may be equipped to live out the gospel in the world. They are to be faithful in prayer, expectant and watchful for the signs of God's presence, as he reveals his kingdom among us. (The Bishop addresses the Ordinands directly.) Bishop: We trust that you are fully determined, by the grace of God, to give yourself wholly to his service, that you may draw his people into that new life which God has prepared for those who love him. And now, in order that we may know your mind and purpose, you must make the declarations we put to you. Do you accept the Holy Scriptures as revealing all things necessary for eternal salvation through faith in Jesus Christ? Ordinands: I do so accept them. Bishop: Will you be diligent in prayer, in reading Holy Scripture, and in all studies that will deepen your faith and fit you to bear witness to the truth of the gospel? Bishop: Do you believe the doctrine of the Christian faith as the Anglican Church of Tanzania and this Confraternity has received it, and in your ministry will you expound and teach it? Ordinands: I believe it and will so do. Bishop: Will you strive to make the love of Christ known through word and example, and have a particular care for those in need? Bishop: Will you be a faithful servant in the household of God, after the example of Christ, who came not to be served but to serve? Bishop: Will you endeavor to fashion your own life and that of your household according to the way of Christ, that you may be a pattern and example to Christ's people? Bishop: Will you work with your fellow servants in the gospel for the sake of the kingdom of God? Bishop: Will you accept the discipline of this Church and give due respect to those in authority? Bishop: Will you then, in the strength of the Holy Spirit, continually stir up the gift of God that is in you, to grow in holiness and grace?

(The congregation stands and the Ordinands turn and face them.) Bishop: Brothers and sisters, you have heard how great is the charge that these Ordinands are ready to undertake, and you have heard their declarations. Is it now your will that they should be ordained? People: It is. Bishop: Will you continually pray for them? People: We will. Bishop: Will you uphold and encourage them in their ministry? People: We will. (The Ordinands turn back to face the bishop, who continues, addressing them) Bishop: In the name of our Lord, we bid you remember the greatness of the trust in which you are now to share: the ministry of Christ himself, who for our sake took the form of a servant. Remember always with thanksgiving that the people among whom you will minister are made in God's image and likeness. In serving them you are serving Christ himself, before whom you will be called to account. You cannot bear the weight of this calling in your own strength, but only by the grace and power of God. Pray therefore that your heart may daily be enlarged and your understanding of the Scriptures enlightened. Pray earnestly for the gift of the Holy Spirit. (The Ordinands then kneel or stand. The congregation shall pray silently for the fulfillment of these purposes.) Bishop: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who has given you a good will to do all these things, grant you also the strength and power to perform the same; that, he, accomplishing in you the good work which he has begun, you may be found perfect and without reproach on the last day; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (The Ordinands kneel facing the Bishop.) Holy Spirit Hymn --- Fall Afresh (Jeremy Riddle) To hunger to seek to thirst Awaken first love come awake And do as You did at first Awaken my soul come awake To worship with all your strength Chorus Spirit of the living God come fall afresh on me Come wake me from my sleep Blow through the caverns of my soul Pour in me to overflow, to overflow Bridge Come and fill this place Let Your glory now invade (2x, then Chorus) The Ordination of a Deacon (All now stand as witnesses, except the Ordinands, who kneel facing the Bishop.) Bishop: We praise and glorify you, almighty Father, because in your infinite love you have formed throughout the world a holy people for your own possession, a royal Priesthood, a universal Church. We praise and glorify you because you sent your only Son Jesus Christ to take the form of a slave; he humbled himself for our sake, and in obedience accepted death, even death on a cross. We praise and glorify you because in every age you send your Spirit to fill those whom you have chosen, to equip your holy people for the work of ministry, for the building up of the body of Christ. And now we give you thanks that you have called these your servants, whom we ordain in your name, to share as deacons in the ministry of the gospel of Christ, who came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. Therefore, Father, through Christ our Lord we pray:

(Here the Bishop lays his hands on the heads of the Ordinands) Bishop: Send down the Holy Spirit on your servants Rebecca and Bert for the office and work of Deacon in your Church. Through your Spirit, heavenly Father, give these your servants grace and power to fulfill their ministry. Make them faithful to serve and constant in advancing your gospel in the world. May they follow the example of Jesus Christ your Son, who washed the feet of his disciples, and set the needs of others before his own. May their lives be disciplined and holy, their words declare your love and their actions reveal your glory, that your people may walk with them in the way of truth and be made ready for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ; to whom, with you and your Holy Spirit, belong glory and honor, worship and praise, now and for ever. People: Amen. (Then the Bishop shall deliver a Book of Gospels or New Testament to the Ordinands, saying) Bishop: Take the Authority to read the Gospel in the Church of God and to preach the same. (The Deacons are now vested. In a time of quiet, some may pray out loud, one at a time, and others may pray in secret. After a few minutes, the minister may say) Bishop: Our trust is in you, merciful Lord. People: We rely on you alone, O God of love. Amen. The Peace of the Lord (All stand.) Bishop: Jesus said, Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you; I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not be afraid. (John 14:27) Bishop: The Peace of the Lord be always with you. People: And with your spirit. (The People greet each other.) The Feast Liturgy of the Eucharist (The Deacons prepare the bread and wine on the Holy Table, while the people sing a hymn, and give their offerings. The Bishop prays over the offerings.) The Placing of the Gifts Bishop: Thine, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty. People: All that is in the heaven and the earth is thine, and of thine own do we give to thee. The Great Thanksgiving Bishop: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Bishop: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord. Bishop: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All: It is good and right so to do. Bishop: Indeed, it is our joy to thank you at all times and in all places to give thanks unto thee, O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, Everlasting God, through Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom thou hast made and dost sustain the worlds. We praise thee for the order of thy creation, and for all the material blessings of our life. But chiefly we praise thee for thy love for fallen man in giving thy Son to take our nature upon him, to die for our sins and to be raised from the dead for our justification. We praise thee, O God, who hast set him in glory at thy right hand, where he ever lives to make intercession for us, who draw near to thee through him. Again, we praise thee, O Father, for sending to us the promised Holy Spirit, through whom thou dost pour out upon us thy manifold gifts of grace and hast made us a royal Priesthood, to set forth thy praises who hast called us out of darkness into the glory of thy light.

Therefore with angels and archangels, with patriarchs and prophets, apostles and martyrs, and with all the holy company of heaven, we cry aloud with joy, evermore praising thee, saying: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of power and might Heaven and earth are full of your glory Hosanna in the highest Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord Hosanna in the highest ( Sanctus by Justin Brooks) Bishop: All glory be to thee, O heavenly Father, who in thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ that all who believe in him might have eternal life. Hear us, O merciful Father, we humbly beseech thee, and grant that we, receiving this Bread and this Cup, in remembrance of the death and passion of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ, may be partakers of his most blessed Body and Blood: For in the same night that he gave himself to death, he took Bread, and when he had given thanks to thee he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat, this is my Body which is given for you, do this in remembrance of me. Likewise after supper he took the Cup, and when he had given thanks to thee he gave it to them, saying, Drink this, all of you, for this is my Blood of the New Covenant which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins, do this as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. His death, O Father, we proclaim. His resurrection we confess. His coming we await. Glory to thee, O Lord as we now say: People: Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Bishop: Wherefore, O Father, we do this as thy Son commanded, offering to thee, with this holy Bread and Cup, our praise and thanksgiving for his one sacrifice offered upon the cross, for his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension. Accept us in him, we beseech thee, and grant that all we who are partakers of this Holy Communion may be filled with thy Holy Spirit and made one in thy holy Church, the body of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Through whom and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory be to thee, O Father Almighty, for ever and ever. Amen. The Lord s Prayer Bishop: As our Savior commanded and taught us, we are bold to say: All: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread (After a short silence the Bishop breaks the Bread.) Bishop: The Bread which we break, is it not a sharing of the Body of Christ? We who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf. The Communion Deacons: Draw near and receive the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, which were given for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. Minister: The Body of our Lord Jesus Christ, which was given for thee. Recipient: Amen. Minister: The Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, which was shed for thee. Recipient: Amen.

You Are My King I m forgiven, because you were forsaken I m accepted, you were condemned I m alive and well, your spirit is within me Because you died and rose again Chorus Amazing love, how can it be That you my king would die for me Amazing love, I know it s true It s my joy to honor you, in all I do, I honor you Bridge You are my king, you are my king Jesus, you are my king, Jesus, you are my king Be Thou My Vision (Music: Traditional Irish Tune, Words: Eleanor Henrietta Hull, Translation: Mary Elizabeth Byrne) Be thou my vision oh Lord of my heart Naught be all else to me save that thou art Thou my best thought by day or by night Waking or sleeping thy presence my light Be thou my wisdom and thou my true word I ever with thee and thou with me Lord Thou my great Father and I thy true Son Thou in me dwelling and I with thee one Riches I heed not nor man s empty praise Thou mine inheritance now and always Thou and thou only be first in my heart High King of heaven my treasure thou art High King of heaven my victory won My I reach heaven s joys O bright heaven s sun Heart of my own heart whatever befall Still be my vision oh Ruler of all Post Communion (Silence is kept, while all make their thanksgiving to God.) Bishop: O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is gracious. And his mercy endureth for ever. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name; Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits; Who forgives all your iniquity, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, Who satisfies you with good as long as you live, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle s. Bless the Lord, all his works, in all places of his dominion, Bless the Lord, O my soul. People: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Bishop: Holy Father, we beseech thee to keep in thy truth all whom thou hast made one in thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant us strength and power through thy spirit in our inner being, that we may keep our eyes fixed on the hope that thou dost set before us, and walk worthily of our calling. Make us faithful in our witness and constant in our service. Help us to meet whatever comes with fortitude, patience, and joy, to the praise and glory of thy holy name, through the same thy Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Bishop: The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen. How Great Thou Art O Lord my God when I in awesome wonder Consider all the worlds thy hands have made I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder Thy power throughout the universe displayed Chorus Then sings my soul my savior God to thee How great thou art, how great thou art Then sings my soul my savior God to thee How great thou art, how great thou art And when I think that God his son not sparing Sent him to die I scarce can take it in That on the cross my burden gladly bearing He bled and died to take away my sin (Chorus) When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation And take me home what joy shall fill my heart Then I shall bow in humble adoration And there proclaim my God how great thou art (Chorus 2x) Dismissal (The New Deacons dismiss the people with these words.) Deacons: The Lord be with you. All: And with your spirit. Deacons: Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. All: In the name of Christ. Amen.
