3 Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church Belle Chasse, Louisiana March 18, 2018 Question: I ve heard Annulment described as Catholic Divorce. Is that a fair comparison? The comparison between annulment and divorce is not really a one-to-one match. Divorce is a legal proceeding that dissolves the bonds recognized under civil laws. On the other hand, annulment is a short-hand term for the process under Canon Law by which a relationship is examined to see if it meets the requirements under Canon Law to be a valid, sacramental marriage. In other words, the civil divorce creates a separation, while the annulment process seeks to discover if a true union actually existed in the first place. A Catholic who divorces does not cause himself to be separated from the sacramental life of the Church. Entering into a new marriage without a declaration of nullity does separate them. A declaration of nullity enables a Catholic to try again to enter into a valid sacramental marriage. The Code of Canon Law of the Catholic Church defines marriage in canon 1055, 1: The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life, is by nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring; this covenant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament. If any of these elements is missing, a case can be made that a valid marriage did not exist in the first place. In the annulment process, a person known as a procurator helps the person seeking a declaration of nullity. The procurator helps write the various petitions and guides the petitioner throughout the process. In the past, this process could be lengthy, complicated, and expensive. Today, the rules have been streamlined for most cases; there is rarely any fee involved; and the Archbishop may make the declaration on simple cases - a great improvement over the past where all cases went through both a local Tribunal and another review in Rome. for more information. They had the chance to determine if each animal was a vertebrate or invertebrate, herbivore or omnivore, and bird or mammal. Our first grade students had an exci ng hands on lesson with bones this week. They also learned that joints help the various bones in our body move!

4 The Fifth Sunday of Lent The ALPHA program explores the basics of the Christian faith and will begin Monday, April 2nd, at 6:00pm in the KC Hall. There will be a meal, a short video, and a discussion. Sixty (60) spaces are available and you can register at all weekend Masses until capacity has been reached. Walk of the 9 Churches-March 30, 2018 Our Lady of Perpetual Help Confirmation Class of 2018 will be doing the Walk of the Nine Churches on Good Friday. We will meet at St. Louis Cathedral at 8:00 AM. We will begin our pray and walk at 8:15 AM. We should finish between 12:00 and 12:30 PM at St. Mary s Assumption. Please bring water to keep from dehydrating. A hat and sunscreen is recommended. Although it is Good Friday and we should be fasting, a piece of fruit or granola bar might be needed to keep up strength. There is a book store at a few of the churches and donations are appreciated if you want to bring some money. OLPH is not responsible for carpooling and families are welcome to join the walk. The Fi h Sunday of Lent Once upon a me it was the tradi on to cover all crucifixes, statues, and pictures in purple cloth from two Sundays before Easter un l Good Friday. Those were the days when the Fi h Sunday of Lent, one week before Palm Sunday, was called Passion Sunday or Judica Sunday a er the first word of the introit Judge me, O Lord (from Psalm 43). The veiling referred to the closing words of the Sunday s gospel, They picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple (John 8:59). The Lenten veil also expressed the sorrow of the Church at this me. As a ma er of fact, the Roman Missal s ll says, in a note about the Saturday of the fourth week of Lent, that this tradi- on may be observed, con nuing the veiling un l the beginning of the vigil. FUNERALS: Inform the Church Office as soon as possible when someone in the family dies, preferably before contacting the funeral home. NEW PARISHIONERS: We welcome you to a very friendly and enthusiastic community. Please register at the Church Office or complete a Welcome Card located in the church gathering space. Also, when moving out of the parish or changing your address, please notify the Church Office. SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM: Baptisms are celebrated on the fourth Sunday of the month following the 10:30 a.m. Mass. Parents are expected to call the Church Office three months before the anticipated birth to make an appointment for the prebaptism seminar. The seminar is held on the third Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Day Chapel in Church. (Baptisms are not celebrated during Lent.) SACRAMENT OF FIRST COMMUNION: First Eucharist is celebrated the first Saturday of May for students in the 2nd grade or above who will be completing their 2nd year of religious education at the time of the celebration. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: The mission of OLPH's Religious Education program is to bring the Good News of God s love to all children and their families and to call them to commit their lives to Christ. Religious Education classes are available for children in Preschool through adults. We encourage parents to be parishioners of OLPH when registering students for Religious Education classes. SUNDAY LITURGY OF THE WORD: Children in grades K- 2nd are invited with a catechist during 10:30 a.m. Mass to the Day Chapel for the Liturgy of the Word. A summary of the readings of the day is discussed on their level. PARISH SCHOOL OF RELIGION: PSR classes for students in Kindergarten through 8th grade not attending a Catholic school, are offered on Tuesday or Wednesday during the school year from 4:45 6:00 p.m. HIGH SCHOOL OF RELIGION: Students in 9th through 12th grade not attending a Catholic High School are offered classes on Sunday evenings 5:30-7:00 p.m. in the KC Hall. RCIA: Interested in the Catholic Faith Come to RCIA Are you or someone you know interested in becoming Catholic or completing Sacraments? Please join our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). We have a Year-Round RCIA process that you can enter into whenever you are ready. This is for you if you have never been baptized, if you have been baptized into another denomination and now want to become Catholic, or if you are an adult Catholic but have never been confirmed. Children s Offering Envelopes: Children s offering envelopes are available in the church library. Please take a few envelopes for your child to use. They may be colored and decorated. During the collection, the children are invited to bring their offerings up and place them into a basket in front of the altar. Memorial Walk to Honor our Loved Ones We are taking orders for the next Phase of the Memorial Walk in the back of OLPH Cemetery. We invite all who wish to honor the memory of a deceased family member or friend to participate by purchasing an engraved brick for $50, thus assuring them a permanent place to be remembered at OLPH.
