3 Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church Belle Chasse, Louisiana The Church in the Crescent: 300 Years of Catholicism in New Orleans open now through 2018 The new exhibit at the Old Ursuline Convent Museum will focus on the history of St. Louis Cathedral from small wooden chapel to Minor Basilica, it will celebrate the first Catholic Church in the city and share the history of the seat of the Archdiocese of New Orleans. In this three hundredth year of foundation of the city of New Orleans, we celebrate not only the history of our beloved city, but also our Cathedral Church, the Mother Church of all the churches from the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Lakes, from the West of the Mississippi to the Rocky Mountains, and the cradle of Christianity within the vast extent of the Mississippi Valley. The Cathedral stands on the site which Bienville traced out for it and upon which the Catholic priest planted the Cross of Christ on February 9, This exhibit shares the story of the St. Louis Church from its beginnings as a small wooden church to its present day iconic edifice. With photographs, portraits, letters, and incredibly preserved artifacts, the exhibit explores the rich history of the Catholic Church s three centuries in the Crescent City including: History of Catholicism in New Orleans from 1718 to 2018 with special emphasis on the St. Louis Cathedral Church History of the Old Ursuline Convent-Oldest building in the Mississippi Valley-built in 1745 History of the landing of the Ursulines Sisters in New Orleans and their contribution to New Orleans education St. Mary s Chapel built in 1845 for Archbishop Antoine Blanc Earliest surviving sacramental records of baptisms and marriages from the St. Louis Cathedral (French Colonials, Enslaved African Americans, Free Persons of Color, and Native Americans) 1745 drawing of the St. Louis Church 1788 General Census records of the Providence of New Orleans (prior to becoming a diocese) Architectural and historic drawings of the church and its renovations Artifacts from archeological digs at the Old Ursuline Convent and the St. Louis Cathedral Garden March 11, 2018 OLPH School News Krewe of Li le Hornets Friday, February 9, st Place: Amelia Mayeaux 3rd Place: Logan Taulli 2nd Place: Logan Sornito Honorable Mention: Leah Gibson-James
4 The Fourth Sunday of Lent The Beginning Experience Weekend on April 6-8, 2018, is a wonderful healing opportunity for those suffering the loss of a spouse either through death or separation/ divorce. Those who have attended this weekend attest to the new hope they have received and the powerful safe and loving environment they found in the experience. Under the sponsorship of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, Office of Marriage and Family Life, this International program has helped thousands navigate the road through grief. Call Jeani (985) or Genevieve (504) for more information. Lenten Prayer O gracious Master, infuse in our hearts the spotless light of Your Divine Wisdom and o p e n t h e e y e s o f our mind that we may un- derstand the teachings of Your Gospel. Instill in us also the fear of Your blessed commandments, so that having curbed all carnal desires, we may lead a spiritual life, both thinking and doing everything to please You. For You, O Christ, our God, are the enlightenment of our souls and bodies; and to You we render glory, together with Your eternal Father, and with Your all holy, life-creating Spirit, now and forever, and ever. The Fourth Sunday of Lent This Sunday has had many aliases: Laetare Sunday: The word Laetare comes from the first words of the introit: Laetare, Jerusalem ( Rejoice with Jerusalem, Isaiah 66:10). This halfway point and respite in the penitential season is marked by rose vestments instead of violet. There is a joyful note at this point in Lent because of the ancient practice of handing over the Apostles Creed to catechumens, the last and decisive step for those preparing for Baptism. Mothering Sunday: The sponsoring community of the Church would have been deeply conscious of its own spiritual birth and life. Not surprisingly, the ancient and indulgenced custom of visiting one s mother church or cathedral developed on this same day of Laetare Sunday. Small countryside chapels served as the weekly gathering places for liturgy, but on this Sunday, all would go with their offerings to the mother church of the parish, where they had been baptized. In a natural evolution of this pilgrimage, children would also return home to spend the day with mother and parents. Naturally, roses were the traditional flowers of the day, because rose was the color of the vestment and the decoration on the altar. After mass, the roses were taken to mothers. One tradition present Mothering Sunday as an honor to St. Anne, the Blessed Mother s Mother, when children would go a mothering and bring flowers, gifts, and sweets to their mother. Refection (Latin: refreshment, repast) Sunday: The Sunday is so named because the Scripture included the story of Joseph feeding his brothers (first reading) and Jesus feeding the multitude (gospel). On this day in certain locales, it was tradition to serve rich simnel cakes. Ornamented with scallops, they commemorated the food spoken of in the readings. Rose Sunday: This name comes from the papal blessing of the golden rose, a symbol of spiritual joy. The floral spray was blessed by the pope on the Fourth Sunday of Lent and sent to some notable person or institution to acknowledge and honor special service or loyalty. There is a small container of musk and balsam in the heart of the spray s principal rose.
