3 ST. MARY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION WOOSTER, OH Dear Parishioners: Ascension...We need not forget about it! Most of us in church this weekend will recall Ascension long being observed on a Thursday based on the accounts of Scripture relating to the period of Jesus post-resurrection appearances. The First reading of Mass for the feast relates it thus: He presented himself alive to them by many proofs after he had suffered, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God...When they gad gathered together...he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight (Acts 1: 3, 6a, 9b). While around the world, the feast is still predominantly marked on Thursday, all but ten of the fifty states of the USA have transferred it to the following Sunday. The merits of such a transfer can surely be debated (for example: one view is that more people will make it to Mass on Sunday; another view may be that we are further allowing our hyper-busy culture to dictate our observances). I offer the following, drawn from CatholicCulture.org as a voice of encouragement:... even if one lives in one of the 40 states which celebrate the Ascension Mass on Sunday, if we are following the Church's liturgy, our hearts should be focused on the Ascension joy with the whole Church community beginning on Ascension Thursday. The preparation for Pentecost in the form of a novena should begin on Ascension Thursday. The liturgy continues the rejoicing of "mounting his throne"from Thursday until Saturday, and our hearts should be echoing that joy throughout those days, too. At first glance, the Ascension would seem to be a sad day. Christ in his human body is leaving the world for the last time. But we need to take our cues from the liturgy. This is a joyful feast; it is the fulfillment of Christ's salvific mission. The Ascension is the final leg of the Paschal Mystery: Passion, Death, Resurrection and Ascension into heaven (as mentioned in the Eucharist Prayer of the Mass). It is not until Jesus ascends and returns to His Father that His act of Redemption is completed. Our place in heaven is prepared at this feast -- we will now share in Christ's glory. That is why our hearts should sing with Psalm 47 as it repeats 3 days in a row, "God mounts His throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord." For a lovely novena to the Holy Spirit, please check out Finally, here is a entry from our local Lehman s website:... here in Ohio s Amish country, the Amish still faithfully celebrate Ascension Day. Amish-owned businesses are closed and Amish employees of non-amish businesses do not go to work. Amish churches hold formal services in the morning, and the afternoon is reserved for reflection, relaxation, visiting, and large meals with extended family and friends. Ascension Day is a holiday that most Amish are pretty staunch about, said Sharon Hershberger, a longtime Lehman s employee with Amish background. Some churches have certain things they do at church only on that day, and most (Amish) are very strict about observing this holiday. Whatever our religious inclinations, we can all learn from and appreciate the Amish community s deep dedication to faith, family and tradition. 5 ST. MARY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION WOOSTER, OH GRATEFUL GIVING REFLECTION: RESOLUTIONS Each year, people throughout the world make New Year s resolutions. For many, these resolutions are short lived and quickly forgotten. At our Baptism and Confirmation, we made New Life resolutions. Our baptismal promises are lifelong commitments to Jesus and the Church. We recognize that all that we possess comes from God. We are God s stewards. We have been empowered to manage the abundant gifts that we have received. As good stewards, it is our responsibility to give back a portion of the time, talent and treasure we receive from our generous and loving God. Let us recommit ourselves to the Lord by taking the time to plan. Let us make stewardship of time and talent part of our lifestyle, and stewardship of treasure part of our budget. Each must do as already determined, without sadness or compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. (2 Corinthians 9:7) GRATEFUL GIVING PROGRAM UPDATE Follow-up letters from Fr. Stephen will be mailed to all households from whom we have not yet received a response to our Grateful Giving Program. Please respond as soon as you are able by placing your intention card in the collection basket. The Catholic Daughters Court Wooster # 1073 will meet on Thursday, June 1, at 7 p.m. in the St. Mary Parish Hall. Thank you to everyone who helped with the Fatima Rally on May 13th. There were about 50 people who prayed the rosary together at the shrine. We hope to rally again on October 14th, the anniversary of the last apparition. The members who signed to bring food for the Habitat for Humanity meal on June 2 may bring the food to the meeting. Plans for the annual card party fundraiser on Wednesday, July 12th, from noon to 3 p.m. in St. Mary's Activity Center will be discussed. Lent has always been one of my favorite seasons in the church year. It s all about making a conscious effort to become closer to and more like Jesus, explained Kindergarten teacher, Kathy Gorman. During Lent, we focus on fasting, prayer and almsgiving as a way to become more mindful of how Jesus has called us to live out our faith. Kindergarten students chose to give up things that were important to them like candy or computer games, or bad habits like fighting with their siblings. This helped them to understand the meaning of sacrifice. But Mrs. Gorman challenged them to go one step further. Each day, students were given the homework assignment to count their blessings, reflect on them in prayer, and share their blessings with those less fortunate. They did this by placing a penny in a jar for each blessing they had counted. For example, students might be asked to count how many shoes they had. They then thanked God for the gift of being able to walk and run and prayed for those in the world who could not do so. The following day, students used the numbers they had counted in their math lessons. Students identified the numbers as odd or even, and represented them using both tally marks and base ten blocks. The base ten blocks were than added together and regrouped to get daily class total. By the end of Lent, the class had counted 15, 463 blessings which added up to $ But the learning didn t stop there as Mrs. Gorman incorporated hands-on learning into their math unit on money. Working together in small groups, the students actually counted all the pennies, using hundred charts to help them keep track! Needless to say, they got really good at counting to 100! And after trying to lift the buckets of pennies, they quickly figured out why consumers prefer using other denominations of coins, paper money and even credit cards! Finally, the students had to decide exactly how to share their $150 of blessings with those less fortunate. They brainstormed many different charities including those who worked with the homeless, refugees, the hungry, cancer patients, and those without clean drinking water. After discussing each group, they finally voted on targeting a charity that helped to feed the hungry. It was just about that time that Mrs. Gorman read an article in the paper about how the Wooster Hope Center was in need of monetary donations to help feed hungry families here in Wayne County. I explained to the kids that while we were praying for guidance to find a group to give our money to, Wooster Hope Center was praying for much needed money donations to help feed hungry families right here in our neighborhood! They thought it was pretty cool that we could be the answer to each others prayers! St. Mary School is still accepting students for Kindergarten registration. Students must be five years old by September 30th. For more information, contact St. Mary School at
