2 ST. MARY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION Dear friends, Much has been written about music in the Roman Catholic liturgy, especially since the 2nd Vatican Council over fifty years ago. Many have welcomed the changes in the liturgy while others have not. When it comes to liturgical music, many have opinions and the debate can be lively and I imagine it will continue from now until the end of time. While parish musicians have numerous resources to refer to in choosing specific songs for Mass, we should first take a look at WHY we have music at Mass. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) provides some basic guidelines for us in a document called Sing to the Lord: Music In Divine Worship. It begins with this vision: God has bestowed upon his people the gift of song. God dwells within each human person, in the place where music takes its source. Indeed, God, the giver of song, is present whenever his people sing his praises. (STL,1) This, my friends, is why we sing and play at Mass! And sing we do! Here at St. Mary, we are blessed with a large pool of talented cantors, psalmists, instrumentalists and a devoted, hard-working choir. But more importantly, we are blessed with an assembly singing His praises at each and every Mass. This is the goal of music ministry. As David Haas writes, We do not sing AT the liturgy. Rather, we SING the liturgy. I like nothing better than to hear someone say I couldn t get that song out of my head after Mass today. I am often asked, especially by couples planning their wedding liturgies, what music they are allowed to use. Because a Catholic wedding is liturgy, the music should help the assembly give thanks and praise to God. The music should thank God for bringing this couple together and not just be favorite songs of a bride and groom. (These pieces are many times not written for liturgy but could be used at the rehearsal dinner or reception.) We want to celebrate the wedding liturgy in a prayerful, joyful and memorable way and include a singing assembly whenever possible. Good online resources are giamusic.com and ocp.org.. As we enter the peak of our Fall season, we are also celebrating some important feast days this month. This week we ll be celebrating the feast of St. Francis of Assisi (October 4th), the gentle friar whose reverence for nature embraced all of earth s inhabitants, wild and tame; we celebrate the memorial of John XXIII on October 11th; and on October 22nd we observe the feast day of St. Pope John Paul II. As our seasons change, we might reflect on the changes these men have made in the lives of so many. With only two months left in our liturgical year, you may have noticed that our Breaking Bread missalettes are looking rather tattered, which is a good thing in a way we know they ve been used! When the new missalettes come in for 2018, we ll also be getting clear vinyl covers for them. Thank you Fr. Steve! And finally, I d like to take this opportunity to publicly thank those who have taken hours and hours of time from their busy lives to participate on a regular basis in our music ministry. God bless you for sharing your gifts. May music draw us all closer to our loving and merciful God and may we continue to make a joyful noise unto the Lord. Peace, Barb Hufford 2 Mass Schedule and Intentions *see facing page for feasts and memorials observed WOOSTER, OH Sunday, October 1 8:00am Benjamin Thomas Anfang 11:00am Mass 1:00pm Communion Service in St. Agnes in Orrville 5:30pm Mass No evening Adoration Monday, October 2 No 7:00am Mass 9:30am Communion Westview *All are welcome! Perez in a special Mass celebrating the closing of the anniversary celebration of the apparitions of the Blessed Mother at Fatima, Portugal in The Mass will be celebrated on Saturday morning, October 7th at 10:00 a.m. in St. John Cathedral in downtown Cleveland. Please join the bishop in this special moment honoring Our Lady, Saturday, October 7th, 10:00 a.m. at the Cathedral. Parking is available on the surface lot behind the Cathedral. ~FATIMA ANNIVERSARY~ years ago, Our Lady of Fatima requested: "PRAY THE ROSARY" Opportunities to pray the Rosary~ On Friday, October 2:30pm, St. Mary School students will be leading Rosary at the Fatima Shrine. Everyone is invited. There will be seating available. There will be a Fatima Rally on Saturday, October 14th at the Our Lady's Shrine by the church to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the last vision of our Lady by the children of Fatima, the Miracle of the Sun. The rally will start at noon. Lead by the Catholic Daughters, the rosary will be said, prayers will be prayed, and songs will be sung. Chairs will be provided. Anyone can come. 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MIRACLE OF THE SUN Friday, October 13th is the 100th Anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun which took place in Fatima Portugal. The 3 shepherd children asked Our Lady to give a sign, so that people would believe that she was appearing to the children as they testified; and what a sign it was! The sun danced in the sky, spiraled down toward earth and gave off a rainbow of colors. The drenched earth from a nonstop rain became dry, and the 70,000 who witnessed this in the field where she appeared for 5 months, were astounded at all this, and realized that their clothes were dry, and there was no evidence of the downpour. St. Mary is planning a commemoration of this miracle to honor Our Blessed Mother, with some events that weekend, beginning on the 13th. The proposal is to have the rosary said non-stop from 7 am, ending at 7 pm on Friday. We are in need of people who will lead the rosary during a one hour shift, in a public venue (such as the gazebo downtown), and many others to participate for whatever time they can give; a few minutes, on their way to work, coming home, during lunch anytime for any amount of time. Mary is our way to peace, and we need Her now, more than ever. This is an opportunity for everyone in our parish to demonstrate our faith and tell Our Mother that you are willing to spend time with her to change our world. If you are willing to lead, please contact Dorene Miller at / /doreneamiller@sssnet.com
