3 June 4, 2017 PENTECOST SUNDAY SEND OUT YOUR SPIRIT Last week we heard that, following the Ascension, the disciples, Mary, and other followers of the Lord retreated to the upper room in prayer. This week we hear that, while praying in that room, the Holy Spirit comes upon them. Jesus' post- Resurrection promise, recounted in today's Gospel, is fulfilled: the power of the Holy Spirit comes upon Jesus' followers. Saint Paul tells us that all of us, in some way, are given gifts of the Holy Spirit, gifts that can be used to spread the Good News. Today is one of the Church's greatest festivals. Let us carry the refrain of the responsorial psalm with us throughout the coming week: "Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth!" (Psalm 104:30). CONGRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU To our 8th grade students who graduated last Friday evening. May your Catholic education be a visible sign of your attendance at weekly Masses, no matter what High School you attend. To all our Religious Education teachers who took time to teach our students about Catholic faith. Wolfram St.). RENEW MY CHURCH - STUDY & DISCUSS Renew My Church is a multi-year process with the purpose of strengthening parish vitality and better aligning its resources and mission. The whole Archdiocese of Chicago started with this process two years ago. Join us in studying and discussing the vision behind the whole process. We will continue with meetings on Thursday, June 8, at 6 p.m. in the St. Jerome Small Hall. We are using a book Forming Intentional Disciples: The Path to Knowing and Following Jesus by Sherry Weddell. LETTER FROM CARDINAL CUPICH Dear Friends in Christ, On the weekend of June 10-11, 2017, we will take up a special collection for the Retired Priests of the Archdiocese. In May of 2016, I ordained 5 men to the priesthood. This May I ordained another 5 men. 13 priests retired at the end of June By the end of this coming June, an additional 20 priests will retire. These retirements will bring our total of retired priests to 230. This will mean that close to 30% of our clergy will have reached retirement status. 35 of our retired priests are either in nursing homes or are receiving home care. I am very grateful to our retired priests who are able to continue to share their priestly ministry in our parishes. I realize that many parishes depend upon their service for daily and Sunday Masses, baptisms, weddings, funerals and countless other good works of the Church. Without the help of our retired priests many parishes would have to reduce Mass schedules and other sacramental services. Our retired priests rely upon your help now. The Priests Retirement and Mutual Aid Association (PRMAA) cares for our retired priests. As you know well, the cost for health care, prescription drugs and nursing home care continues to increase. This special collection in June is different from Retirement Fund for Religious collection in December. That collection supports retired men and women in religious orders. Retired archdiocesan priests do not receive any funds from that collection, which is why I am asking you to support them with this Fund for Retired Priests. This letter give me the opportunity to share my heartfelt appreciation for the ministry and devotion of our retired priests. I also want to remember all the faithful priests who have gone to their eternal reward, and I commend them to your prayers as well. Please know of my gratitude to you for your most gracious generosity in this collection last year and I ask that you repeat your kindness this year. Your donations, your prayers, and your good wishes are an affirmation of our retired priests and the good they have accomplished in service to the people of the archdiocese. 4 SANTA LUCIA PARISH VOLUNTEER CATECHISTS WANTED We are looking for a few good men and woman to teach Religious Education (CCD) in school year If you are looking for ways to make meaningful contributions to our church, or to help our children be all they can be become a Religious Education teacher. Assistance and training will be provided so you will be prepared to be an effective teacher. Talk to Eluisa Lynn (Coordinator of Religious Education), or call the Parish office and talk to Fr. Stipe. ONLINE GIVING AVAILABLE We have a flexible and secure system that allows you to support Santa Lucia online. Your contributions will safely be delivered to the parish and can be confirmed via or text. You can give a single donation or as frequently as you like. You can schedule automatic monthly or weekly offerings. Envelopes will continue to be available. ARE YOU A REGISTERED PARISHIONER? If you attend Mass here regularly, we encourage you to register as a member of Santa Lucia. Registering makes the process much easier when it is time for infant baptism, religious education registration, weddings and when asked to be a sponsor for baptism or confirmation. Visit the Parish Office. SUNDAY ENGLISH MASS SCHEDULE AT SANTA LUCIA AND ST. JEROME Mass schedule at Santa Lucia is: Saturday at and Sunday at English Mass schedule at St. Jerome is: Saturday at 5:30 p.m. and Sunday at 7:30 and 9:30 a.m. If your schedule calls for Mass attendance at an alternate time, feel free to bring your envelope to any of these Masses, and we will ensure your offering gets sent to your home church. ST. ANTHONY NOVENA St. Jerome Parish is preparing for the feast of St. Anthony of Padua with Novena and Mass every day at 7 p.m. starting Sunday, June 4. Though St. Anthony first joined the Augustinian Order, when he was 26 years old he joined the Franciscan Order around 1220 in the hopes of becoming a martyr for his faith. Through his work in Padua in Italy, he became a loved and admired Saint in the Catholic Church, sharing the faith through simplicity which led to him becoming a Doctor of the Church. He is often invoked for helping to recover lost items. Our Novena will conclude on Monday, June 12, with Mass at 7 p.m.
