1 The Parish Family of St. Patrick 200 Illinois Street Lemont, Illinois June 14, 2009 The Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ
2 Page 2 June 14, 2009 Dear Parishioners, Corpus Christi is what we used to call this feastday the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. It is a reminder for us of the centrality of the Eucharist for Catholics. By His power and the actions of the priest, Christ is truly present in the elements of bread and wine. He told His disciples to do this in memory of Me, and we do. He is the reason we gather each week. The privilege He gives us, to receive Him in this Sacrament, is a great intimacy with God Himself. It is good to call to mind how wonderful an event the Mass is. What do we do to show our respect? The church calls us not to eat or drink anything except water for one hour before Mass. This helps us to anticipate the Eucharist eagerly. Remind each other in your household. Also, help the children to dress well for Mass. We shouldn t use the same clothes as for a picnic or a ball game. Dressing well results in better behavior - reverence and attention to our prayer and the prayer of others, but mostly respect for the great mystery unfolding at Mass. This is a fitting feast for us to celebrate the priesthood of our Pastor Emeritus. Father Shannon has offered the Eucharist, and done funerals and weddings and baptisms and confessions for the good people of God at St. Patrick s for a number of years. Now we help him celebrate 50 years since his ordination to the priesthood. Today he will say the Noon Mass and then we will have a reception for him in the Parish Hall, from 1:00 until 3:00 PM. You are invited to stop down and congratulate and thank him for his ministry. We re grateful also to Fr. Kevin Collins, a Vincentian priest who has been a weekend assistant with us for three years. Fr. Kevin will be going to California to begin work at the DePaul Evangelization Center in Montebello, California (near Los Angeles), beginning in July. Father is the celebrant for the 7:30 and 10 AM Masses today, and will be doing the Noon mass next Sunday, June 21 st. After that he will be leaving for his new assignment. God bless you, Father Kevin, and thanks for leading us in praise of God and for bringing our spirits closer to the Lord. Thanks especially for the Body and Blood of the Lord Jesus. Visit us whenever you are back in the Midwest. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand. To contact him after July 1st, his address will be: De Paul Evangelization Center, 1105 S. Bluff Road, Montebello, CA The will be DePaulCenter@att.net. About 200 parishioners and friends had a great time at the Parish Outing to the Sox game last week. It was a beautiful evening didn t even need the jacket (or umbrella). If the final score was not very uplifting, certainly the fireworks display was great entertainment. Everyone seemed to enjoy the company and all the delights of the ballpark and bus ride. Kudos to Don Spadoni and the Men s Club for bringing us such a good time. Thanks to you all. God bless you, Father Mike We Need Each Other Now please give generously to the FUND FOR RETIRED PRIESTS June 14, 2009 The Only Annual Collection for Priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago
3 The Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ Page 3 During the month of May, Fr. Shannon reached the 50th year of his ordination as a priest. We will have a celebration for him after the noon mass this Sunday, June 14, 2009, in the Parish Hall. Please join us for refreshments and to personally congratulate him. Fr. Shannon asks that you not bring any gifts.your presence will be present enough. Feeding the Hungry - a Deacon s and Christian s Work of Mercy The feeding of the poor within Vicariate V has been going on at St. Blase in Summit since April Last January, a dinner meal was also provided for the poor at St. Christopher s in Midlothian. The deacons of Vicariate V will purchase, cook, and serve a monthly dinner meal at each of these two locations. We invite you to help us in this ministry, by shopping at Jewel on June 15, 16, 17. On these dates Jewel-Osco will donate 5% of the food receipts using the coupon below to the Diaconate Community s Dinner Meals for the Poor. 4 Page 4 June 14, 2009 Wow! Who would have thought we would have an emergency closing day in June. I m sorry for any inconvenience our lack of power caused people. As of 12:30 p.m. as I write this, we are still without power. Everyone likes free days but this is not how we would like to end the school year. We really need to have closure at the end of each year. My hope is that will happen at tomorrow s (Friday) closing liturgy. (We will see you in August.) I would like to thank everyone who made me feel very welcome during my first year at St. Al s/st. Pat s. People have been very gracious and helpful and for that I am most appreciative. Thank you especially to the faculty and staff, who pitched in whenever necessary and helped to make things run so smoothly. I couldn t have done it without them. Thank you, also, to Father Mike and Father Brian for working so closely with the school and with me to ensure that a faith filled environment and strong academics continue to flourish in our school. A special thank you to the children for opening their hearts and sharing some part of themselves with me during this first year. I look forward to continuing getting to know each and every student. (It was nice to see more Cub fans than I expected!) As we have done each day at school, I would ask you to pray with your children each day and to take them to Sunday Mass. Please, also, enjoy reading some good books over the summer. My hope is that each of you has a relaxing and refreshing summer. May God bless you in the many activities you will be involved in during this vacation and may He keep you safe and in His care. 5 The Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ Page 5 Interested in Learning More About the Catholic Church? Take a look at the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults). The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a process by which the Catholic Church welcomes new members into its communal life. RCIA is a living experience of the Church, and not just a series of classes that teach knowledge about the Church. Although there is instruction in the facts of the faith, instruction is but one part of a larger experience of knowing and sharing with other members of the Church. If you are interested in learning more, please contact your pastor or call Doreen at And watch the bulletins for further details. What is SPRED? SPRED is a unique program of religious education/faith development for children, teenagers, young adults, and adults with mental retardation, autism, cerebral palsy, epilepsy and those with learning problems. It is not a typical religious education program but one of growing in faith within a small group. It is an opportunity for people to come together to grow in friendships and see their lives as meaningful by becoming more aware of God's presence. Come to an Informational Gathering on Mon., June 29, 7:00 p.m., in St. Alphonsus' parish center on Walnut Street. Parents are most welcomed no matter the age or abilities of their child. We are also looking for interested men and women who would like to volunteer. Volunteers need no experience with special needs people just a willingness to become someone's friend and to grow in faith together. Training is provided. Registration Please turn in your registration forms for the school year as soon as possible as classes are filled on a first come, first served basis. Early registration tuition rates are available up until June 30 th. If you need a registration packet, please call the RE Office at Volunteers It s not too early to start thinking and praying about becoming a catechist or aide in the RE program. Catechists and aides are needed on Sunday mornings (8:25-9:40 am) and Wednesday evenings (6-7:15 pm). Please call Linda O Connor , for more information. Welcome to our new Eucharistic Ministers Don Krengiel and Deb Zagorski have recently completed Eucharistic Minister training and will soon be commissioned to serve at our parish. We thank Don and Deb for their willingness to serve our parish in this way. - Linda O Connor Meals for the Hungry Once again our parish has been asked to participate in the Meals for the Hungry program. The weather was perfect, the fireworks show was spectacular and the 3-home runs that scored 5 runs were smashes. Unfortunately, the homers were for the Cleveland Indians and the Chicago White Sox fell to the Indians that night by a score of 6 to 0. So, if you were at the game and are an Indians fan...congrats, but for the remainder of us...hopefully next outing! Well, with that said...i would simply like to thank all who patronized our St. Pat's Men's Club Chicago White Sox outing on Friday, June 5th. It was a beautiful evening and a lot of fun. Thanks to all who attended the game and helped support the Men's Club with this outing. It's folks like you that help make events like this possible and occur again in the future... 7 The Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ Page 7 Stewardship Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them and they all drank from it. - Mark 14:23 Jesus, the perfect steward, gave thanks, just before He gave Himself to us completely for our salvation. He offered us the chance to drink from His cup. In Eucharist we meet Christ personally and, if we listen to Him, we will know what drinking from His cup means for each of us. Often it means our own sacrifice giving up some of our time, talent and treasure to do His work on earth. PARISH STAFF Rev. Michael J. Cronin, Pastor Rev. Richard J. Shannon, Pastor Emeritus Rev.
