STAND UP FOR LIFE!!! With the passage of the Reproductive Health Act in New York which permits abortion up to the moment of birth many parishioners are understandably upset and desire to do something in response. The purpose of this article is to draw your attention to our archdiocesan response to this devastating bill: 40 Days for Life Lent: March 6 - April 14, Days for Life is a peaceful initiative consisting of 40 days of prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil at abortion facilities. Why is this our response? Because it works. According to Abby Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood manager, When [pro-life] people show up outside the clinic, the no-show rate goes up to almost 75 percent. Many abortion-minded women have turned around from abortion facilities during the 40 Days for Life campaigns in our archdiocese thanks to parishioners witnessing outside the clinics and services provided by the Sisters of Life and our pregnancy centers. But this Lent, we can do better. The Bronx campaign, for example, is in dire need of people to pray and witness outside Bronx Abortion on Eastchester Rd. Tragically, the Bronx has staggeringly high abortion rates 673 abortions for every 1,000 live births, and more pregnancies ending in abortion than live births for young women. The Bronx will be one of six campaigns in the archdiocese this Lent. Each campaign offers your parishioners an opportunity to contribute to a life-giving response to abortion expansion in our state. The local campaign for Westchester County will be: 40 Days for Life Prayer Vigil at Rt. 119, Greenburg [White Plains]. Contact: Gerald Yeung, coordinator 40 Days for Life at <broger8@gmail.com> for details. The vigils are peaceful, and all participants pledge themselves to behave in a Christ-like manner Page 1

4 ASH WEDNESDAY: MARCH 6, 2019 Ashes will be administered in the church on Ash Wednesday at masses taking place at 9 AM and 7 PM, and also at a Service of the Word at 3 PM. LENTEN REMINDERS Lenten Fast and Abstinence During the season of Lent, the Church urges the faithful to reflect a spirit of penance in their daily lives through performing acts of fast and abstinence. + Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 6 and ends on Holy Thursday, April Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. + Fasting means only one full meal a day may be taken. Two smaller meals can be eaten to maintain physical strength but together they should not equal another full meal in quantity. Snacking between meals is not permitted. Catholics ages are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Those who are not specifically obliged to fast are encouraged to join in the discipline of fasting to the extent that they are able. + Abstinence forbids the eating of meat or poultry. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged to abstain on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent and continues to oblige throughout their lives. Those who are not specifically obliged to abstain from eating meat are encouraged to join in the discipline of abstaining to the extent that they are able. + Remember all Fridays of the year are designated as days of penance during which we are encouraged to practice self-denial out of gratitude for the suffering and death Jesus accepted for us. + The time for fulfilling your Easter Duty extends from the First Sunday of Lent (March 10) to Holy Trinity Sunday (June 16). Remember Reconciliation Monday on April 15 in cooperation with the dioceses of Brooklyn and Rockville Centre, with confessions available from 3:00 to 9:00 PM in all our churches. The annual Chrism Mass (for the blessing of Holy Oils used in the sacraments throughout the year) is on Tuesday, April 16 at 4:00 PM at St. Patrick s Cathedral. PASTA WITH THE PASTOR FIRST SERVING ON FRIDAY MARCH 8TH, PRECEDED BY STATIONS OF THE CROSS AT 6 PM IN THE CHURCH! BE SURE TO GET YOUR RESERVATION FORM FOR THE MEATLESS MEAL IN TO THE RECTORY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!! ANNOUNCING A LENTEN BIBLE STUDY SERIES: WALKING WITH JESUS: LEARNING THE ART OF ACCOMPANIMENT What Is Accompaniment? Throughout his pontificate, Pope Francis has been speaking about how important it is for the church to accompany people through their challenges and struggles. This is more than just being with people. It entails deeply listening to them, supporting them, and helping them listen to how God is working in their lives. When we accompany others, we help them discern how God is leading them. Accompaniment is the work of parish leaders, but it is also the work of every Christian. We often encounter people who feel stuck in some way regarding Church teaching. They may be divorced, gay, or lesbian. They may have had children outside of marriage, had an abortion, left the church for a period, or missed receiving sacraments at the normal times. Parish leaders and other helpful parishioners encounter those who are experiencing grief and are in need of healing. Jesus never turned his back on anyone. As serious and dedicated Catholic-Christians, we are called to accompany anyone in need, and help them take steps toward God (even if they are small ones at first). Learning More about Accompaniment: The purpose of this Bible study is not to explain Pope Francis approach to accompaniment, but to instead offer a process for learning more about accompaniment from Jesus example in the Gospels. Here is the 4-session schedule: FRIDAY MARCH 15: "ON THE ROAD TO EMMAUS" FRIDAY MARCH 29: "ACCOMPANYING PETER" FRIDAY APRIL 12: "ACCOMPANYING MARTHA" GOOD FRIDAY APRIL 19: "ACCOMPANYING ACQUAINTANCES" EACH SESSION WILL FOLLOW THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS IN THE CHURCH, WHICH BEGIN AT 6PM ON THE FRIDAYS OF LENT. WE HOPE YOU CAN JOIN US! Page 2

6 We want to use this column to give ourselves a much needed review of our religious knowledge. It will be an on-going column and will follow the three year cycle of readings at Mass. Reading I: Sirach 27:4-7 Responsorial Psalm 92:2-3, 13-14, Reading II: 1 Corinthians 15:54-58 Gospel: Luke 6:39-45 Seeing I once followed the Jesuit Larry Gillick, a blind person, in the literal dark. Neither of us fell into a pit. So, was Jesus wrong? Larry lost his sight before his tenth birthday, but as an adult joined the Society of Jesus and became a marvelous spiritual director. On a retreat he and I were helping to direct, we went on a walk. It was after dark, quite so, and I was as good as blind when we got far enough from the retreat house, with no neighborhood around us? So, the blind following the blind. As we went, he said to me, do you want to go on a trust walk? Blindly (pun intended) I said, why, of course. None of us will have perfect vision, but we should seek continually to clarify what we do see. First he had me do the famous fall backwards that some of my readers have done. I was to release control and tumble back into the arms of another person, in this case Larry. The only problem was that he could not see, and it was also too dark for me to make anything out. I willed to fall back, and he caught me, and we were happy. I marveled at Larry s conquering of his malady. All was good. Except except that there was a next step. Quietly he announced that he, a person supposedly unable to find his way, would lead the way. With my hand on his shoulder and a scarf around my eyes to make certain that I would not cheat we went forth. Could we avoid a pit? I avoided it and so did he. It was indeed a walk of trust. Even though I suspected that anything whatsoever could happen, it did not. I was relieved. Larry was so used to guiding people spiritually that was possibly not an act of trust on his part. For him, it did not mean walking blindly into the unknown, it meant going ahead with increasing confidence that we are accompanied by God, no matter what might come around the next dark bend in the road. What was I myself supposed to learn? To trust recklessly with only sightless guidance? Larry Gillick has been my friend over the years and does not require any beatifying. But I do. Well, maybe the point was that sightlessness is the only way to really see. Jesus says in our Gospel that we have wooden beams in our eyes when we relate to others. Maybe we must close our eyes for a while in order to see around these. We should stop projecting on others our own blockages, and work on the much larger wooden beams in our own psyche instead. This seems to me a quite sound psychological insight. Notice, this understanding does not imply that we should entirely give up helping with the faults of another person. Jesus is just saying that we need to clarify our own vision in order to help someone else. None of us will have perfect vision, but we should seek continually to clarify what we do see. That night I did not have anything like perfect vision. But the steady, blind guidance that Larry Gillick gave me was an act of seeing unlike most others I have known. As you and I begin Lent this coming week, I guess my advice is that we all close our eyes for a while and be guided. John Foley, SJ OUTREACH TO THE POOR Next weekend is Loaves and Fishes Sunday. Please be generous. Daylight Saving Time begins next Sunday, March 10th. Remember to turn your clocks ahead one hour.
