In Minnesota, it remains cold most days and the sidewalks and streets are often treacherous with the buildup of ice. And yet, as the light begins to fill more hours of the day we seem to collectively experience a calling forth from our winter slumber to begin our preparations for the resurrection of life that will occur in the coming season. We find the stirrings of the seeds of hope in new life rising up once again within us. Whether we walk quickly or slowly, or whether we make use of a cane, a walker, or a wheelchair to assist us, many of us appreciate the experience of a walk. Taking a walk can help us clear our heart and mind of unnecessary burdens, or it may help us solve a problem that seemed to have no answer. Sometimes walking with a friend is just the solution to being freshly invigorated. This season of Lent at LHCC will be focused on A Prayerful Walk With Jesus. As theologian Carol Lakey Hess writes in Feasting on the Word (Year C, Volume 4), Whatever we take to be the heart of the gospel will be the central shaping force in our life of faith How can each of us know what is at the heart of Jesus gospel message for us? Even when we ve been followers of Jesus Christ for our whole life, we are of God s creation and thereby constructed to seek renewal and resurrection over and over again during our earthly lifetime. What our faith is shaped by colors so many other decisions we are called to make in life. Let s take a prayerful walk together with Jesus this Lenten season. We begin our walk with an Ash Wednesday service at Lake Harriet Christian Church at 7:30 p.m. on February 17th. Walking Together in Christ, Pastor Tammy Rottschaefer

2 Ash Wednesday Service February 17, :30 p.m. PAUL FICZERI RETIRES Dear Friends in Christ: Pastor Paul Ficzeri of First Christian Church in Mankato, Minnesota, is retiring after many years of dedicated service. His last Sunday in the Mankato pulpit will be February 14, BLANKET SUNDAY FEBRUARY 7 LHCC will hold its annual CWS Blanket onsunday, February 7. Some 8,000 congregations and groups across the U.S. hold CWS Blankets+ events, providing funds to help people in need around the world, including the U.S. For more than 60 years, Church World Service has worked in partnership with local communities to identify their needs and access the resources necessary to build the foundation for a more viable future, including: - Blankets, tents, food and other emergency supplies in the wake of a disaster. - Tools and seeds for refugees returning home to replant their fields. - Wells for families living in droughtprone areas to provide clean, safe water to drink and to irrigate crops and gardens. - Literacy training and microcredit for women struggling to realize their potential. YOUTH NEWS Sledding Sunday, February 7, 12:30 p.m. The TRUST Youth will be hitting the slopes. Meet at Linden Hills UCC for an afternoon of sledding. We will return to LHUCC for pizza after the event. Service Project Youth will participate in a service project through TRUST Chore Program in April. The Chore Program provides household chore and maintenance services to disabled persons of all ages and seniors (over 60) living in South Minneapolis. More information to follow. Mission Trip to Chicago August 1-7, 2010 This trip will be filled with opportunities for service, friendship and fun. Youth will be staying at an inner city church and serving meals at a shelter. There will also be a trip to Wrigley Field to see the Cubs play. Spring and summer fundraisers will be held to help defer transportation and food costs. Details are still being worked out, so stay tuned! 3 SOUPER SUNDAYS IN FEBRUARY Once again, February will be a month of collecting soups of all kinds for donation to Joyce Foodshelf, in the tradition of the Souper Bowl Sunday program. Bring your soups and other donations to the shopping cart in the hall. To my dear church family, Thank you very much for the Christmas gift. LIVE OAKS LUNCH Live Oaks will join the Golden Shepherds group for lunch at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 9. The program features Belinda Jensen of KARE- 11 Weather. A fee of $5 covers both lunch and the program. ELDERS MEETING: The next Elders meeting will be on Thursday, February 4. We will meet at 7 p.m. in the Parlor. WOMEN S BOOK GROUP LHCC Women s Book Group meets the last Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. The February selection is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. A PRAYER FOR FEBRUARY O God, who out of nothingness brought everything that is into being, out of what we are bring more of what we envision but haven t dared; direct our energy and passion to put flesh of action on bare-boned intentions, to lighting bonfires in the face of the midnight of indifference, to building bridges of care across ravines of loneliness; so we can experience co-creation, together with you, and call it very good; through Jesus Christ and your Holy Spirit. Amen.

4 HARMONY FOR HABITATS PEACE, RECONCILIATION AND REUNIFICATION Tony Ross and Beth Rapier, cellists for the Minnesota Orchestra, will be joined by friends from the Minnesota Orchestra and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra for the Harmony for Habitats Concert on Sunday, February 7, at 2 p.m. at St. John s Episcopal Church, 4201 Sheridan Ave. S. This is a TRUST Builders fundraiser. Proceeds benefit Urban Homeworks and Habitat for Humanity. For further information, contact coordinator Norine Larson at "In the name of Christ Jesus, our peace, in whom we are made one, who has broken down the wall of hostility, creating in himself one new people, reconciling all people to God in one body through the cross, thereby bringing the hostility to an end " -Ephesians 2:13-16 One hundred and thirty-seven church leaders from across the world recently recommitted to the goal of peace, reconciliation and reunification of the Korean Peninsula. The Consultation included presentations from the churches of North and South Korea, an overview of developments over the past 25 years, input from political analysts, and a joint celebration of the Eucharist led by North and South Korean church leaders. There have been many positive developments in the past twenty five years, including opportunities for: visits by Christian leaders to North Korea; visits by North Korean Christian leaders to other countries; North and South Korean church leaders to meet and to gain in understanding and trust of each other; and the sharing of growing understanding and trust between North and South Korea. However, in recent years hostility towards the Democratic People's Republic of Korea on the part of other countries has challenged the process, and the

5 change of government in South Korea has brought a sharp change in outlook and policies towards North Korea. The Consultation created a statement calling for numerous actions and encouraging the international community to allow space and time for direct negotiations between North and South Korea to lessen tensions between them. They also called for support of the World Council of Churches' initiatives and encouraged the Christians of North and South Korea to celebrate a turning point in their endeavors for peace and reunification in The statement concludes: "It is the fervent hope and prayer of all participants at the Tsuen Wan Consultation that the divided people of Korea will be reunited soon. We long for the day when the people of the Korean peninsula, together with the rest of the world, can join together in thanksgiving and joy to celebrate that they are again one people and one nation." The Global Food Crisis is impacting more and more countries and reversing the modest gains that had been made in recent years against hunger. It has now become one of our most pressing priorities.
