x Second Sunday after the Epiphany Water into Wine
The Prologue The Lord's Day Second Sunday after the Epiphany Water and Wine Ten O'clock in the Morning The Worship of God THE SERVICE OF PREPARATION Worship is the submission of all our nature to God. It is the quickening of the conscience by God's holiness; the nourishment of the mind with God's truth; the purifying of the imagination by God's beauty; the opening of the heart to God's love; the surrender of the will to God's purpose and all of this gathered up in adoration. ~ William Temple Perhaps there is no better metaphor for the kind of metamorphosis imaged throughout the Gospels than the story of the miracle performed by Jesus at the wedding at Cana, His turning water into wine, saving the raucous party for all the invitees present. Jesus' first recorded miracle is a beautiful allegory symbolizing all things old being made new. It is a profound metaphor for the mystery of metamorphosis! The apostle Paul describes the radical transformation that once caused a segment of the pagan population in the ancient city of Corinth to joyfully embrace the gifts of God's Spirit. The prophet Isaiah declares that nations shall be called by a new name, as if married to the Holy. All our texts for these Sundays after the Epiphany are building toward a climatic conclusion, pointing us to Transfiguration. Our hope today is that the wine of God's fermenting Spirit will purify and refresh the stagnant water of our thirsty souls, a metamorphosis transforming all of us into a holy libation! Gathering Music The Greeting The Spirit of the still speaking God be with you! And also with you. The Call to Worship and Welcome The Music for Organ Amazing Grace arr. Gordon Young The Lighting of the Altar Candles The Opening of the Lectern Bible The Gathering 1 Longing to be recognized and affirmed, God turns our water into wine! With a steadfast love, God calls each one of us by name! We have come to this shelter of refuge, gathered under God's protective wings, seeking to feast on the abundance of God's word!
Drink deeply from the fountain of life, listening for the voice of God, guided by the truth of the Holy! God's gifts are poured out upon us in worship, the still speaking Spirit eager to inspire and empower us to discipleship and service! Let us worship God! The Choral Introit Come, My Way, My Truth, My Life Ralph Vaughan Williams Chancel Choir Come, my way, my truth, my life! Such a way as gives us breath! Such a truth as ends all strife! Such a life as conquers death! Come, my light, my feast, my strength! Such a light as shows a feast! Such a feast as mends in length! Such a strength as makes a guest! Come, my joy, my love, my heart! Such a joy as none can move! Such a love as none can part! Such a heart as joys in love! The Collect 2 Transforming God, God of wine and water, we have gathered to worship the One whose presence in Jesus once blessed a wedding feast at Cana of Galilee; the gifts of the Holy are available to all who accept them, inspiring us even now as we worship You in this sacred setting, listening for Your voice to speak once more through these ancient scriptures; faithful and loving God, grant us the courage to answer when You call our names; we come to the abundance of Your house this day, gathered to drink again from the river of Your delights; inspire our time together here, equipping us to live life to its fullest, pouring out Your still speaking Spirit upon us; empower us to do our part to create a socially just world, the kind of world Martin Luther King, Jr. envisioned for all humanity; meet us now, that we may hear the desires of Your heart for us, that we will discern and know Your will, empowered to do all that You have called us to do in faithful obedience to the way taught to us by Jesus; all this we pray through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the holy and still speaking Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. THE SERVICE OF PRAISE t The Processional Hymn Sing of God Made Manifest ST. GEORGE'S WINDSOR 2
t The Litany of Praise 3 The steadfast love of God fills the universe! The Holy One rejoices in our presence here! How precious is Your steadfast love, transforming God, inviting everyone to take refuge in the shadow of Your wings! God breaks through the silence of our lives, calling us by a new name! With You, God of water and wine, is the fountain of life! In Your light we see, finding light in utmost darkness! The Holy One blesses us with varieties of spiritual gifts, inspiring us to use them well! Your righteousness is like the mountains, ever creating God! Your faithfulness extends to the heavens! Praise the Lord! t The Gloria Glory to the Creator GREATOREX 3
THE SERVICE OF CONFESSION The Call to Confession 4 Come, all who feel forsaken and desolate. Come, all who sense a need in your life, despondent over the world's desperate state. Come, all who feel powerless before the evil we perceive around us. Come, make your confession, finding forgiveness and true freedom in Christ. In the silence and stillness of our moments together, let us confess before the Holy. The Silent Confession The Corporate Confession 5 Let us pray to the Lord: Water-into-wine kind of God, You make time for us even when we give so little time to You. We tend to try and live by our own designs rather than seek Your purposes. Oft-times, we have become mired in our mistakes and then imagine that You do not care. On occasion, we have suffered the agonies of loss and have blamed You rather than seeking the comfort and help You alone can give. Forgive us when we turn away from the judgment we deserve in order to justify ourselves. Where else, other than in You, can we find the integrity for which we yearn and the healing we so desperately need? Help us to face our own foibles, accepting Your loving guidance. The Kyrie arr. David N. Johnson The Assurance of Pardon 6 Hear the good news! God vindicates and liberates, the ruler of the universe offering salvation as a burning torch, brightening and transforming all creation, including all of us human creatures. God recognizes and evokes the beauty within us, calling us by name! The Holy One rejoices in us! The glory of God shines through us! Thanks be to God! 4
THE SERVICE OF THE WORD The Witness from the Hebrew Scriptures * ISAIAH 62:1-5 For Zion s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem s sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch. The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory, and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will give! You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. You shall no more be termed "forsaken," and your land shall no more be termed "desolate," but you shall be called "My Delight Is in Her," and your land "married," for the Lord delights in you, and your land shall be (cared for once again). For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your builder marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you! Listen to what the Spirit of the still speaking God is saying. Thanks be to God! The Response, PSALM 36 Your Gifts, O Lord O WALY WALY The Witness from the Epistles * I CORINTHIANS 12:1-11 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and led astray to idols that could not speak. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says "Let Jesus be cursed!" and no one can say "Jesus is Lord" except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit! And there are varieties of services, but the same Lord! And there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to 5
another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. Listen to what the Spirit of the still speaking God is saying. Thanks be to God! t The Sequence Hymn Help Us Accept Each Other LANCASHIRE * There will be a break between verse two and verse three for the reading of the Gospel. The reading of the Gospel is read in the midst of the beloved faith community, reminding the congregation that the gospel is for all people, and that our call is to carry out its witness in the world. At this high point in the liturgy, the Gospel is not worshipped, but rather is reverenced with respect as it proclaims the ministry and mission of Jesus, represented in words attributed to Jesus. t The Witness from the Gospels* JOHN 2:1-11 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and His disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, "They have no wine!" And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what concern is that to you and to Me? My hour has not yet come." His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever He tells you." Now standing there were six stone water-jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, "Fill the jars with water." And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, "Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward." So they took it. When the 6
said to them, "Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward." So they took it. When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom and said to him, "Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now." Jesus did this, the first of His signs, in Cana of Galilee, revealing His glory! And His disciples believed in Him! The Gospel of the Lord. Thanks be to God! The Sermon A Metaphorical Menagerie: The Mystery of Metamorphosis! Timothy W. Shirley THE SERVICE OF COMMITMENT t The Hymn of Commitment Today We All Are Called to Be Disciples KINGSFOLD 7
t The Peace The peace of Christ be always with you. And also with you. The Concerns of the Church Jo Prater The Pastoral Prayer The Lord's Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. The Receiving of Our Gifts The Offertory Anthem Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven Chancel Choir Praise, my soul, the King of heaven! To the throne thy tribute bring. Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, evermore God's praises sing. Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise the everlasting King! Praise the Lord for grace and favor to all people in distress. Praise God still the same as ever, slow to chide, and quick to bless. Alleluia! Alleluia! Glorious now God's faithfulness! Angels in the heights adoring, you behold God face to face. Saints triumphant now adoring, gathered in from every race. Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise with us the God of grace! arr. James Kirkby t The Doxology OLD HUNDREDTH t The Presentation of Our Gifts t The Prayer of Thanksgiving 8

Worship Notes The Worship of God concludes with The Music for Organ. We invite you to be seated and reflect on today s service, preparing to process into the world, sharing the love of Jesus and the "extravagant welcome" of SouthShore United Church of Christ with everyone you meet. The congregation processes into the world to share the love of Christ and the "extravagant welcome" of SouthShore United Church of Christ with all persons everywhere. The color for the Season after Pentecost is Green, symbolizing the growth and development of the Church. Various symbols of the Trinity, such as the Trefoil and Triangle designs used in our sanctuary, remind us of the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and the Triune nature of God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; Parent, Child, Advocate and Comforter; Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer. Ordinary Time refers to that part of the Church Year that does not fall within one of the major seasons and does not observe any specific aspect of the Mystery of Christ. It consists of thirty-four Sundays in the liturgical year counted backwards from Reign of Christ and emphasizes personal faith development and nurture, and the growth and enhancement of the Church and the churches. An Invitation to Our Guests: Please join us for refreshments at Coffee Hour in Hospitality Hall following Morning Worship. The theme for today's worship service is Water into Wine! *Scripture readings are taken from the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) unless otherwise noted. 1 Gathered By Love: Worship Resources for Year C by Lavon Bayler.
