Rhoads STATEMENT OF OUR PARISH MISSION The Catholic Community of Saint Paul Cathedral Parish, empowered by the Holy Spirit and nourished by the Eucharist, proclaims, witnesses and shares the Good News of Jesus Christ. The Mother Church of the Diocese of Pittsburgh is uniquely situated in the midst of academic, medical and cultural centers. We invite all to join us as we live our faith and reach out in charity to those in need. As we move into our future, we affirm our baptismal call to holiness by deepening our faith and loving one another, all for the honor and glory of God.

2 P S M 20, 2018 FROM THE HEART OF YOUR PASTOR P 2 SCRIPTURE REFLECTION In today's first reading from the Acts of the Apostles, we hear of the glorious arrival of the Holy Spirit in the world as Advocate. In obedience to Jesus, the disciples gathered together in Jerusalem, when suddenly from heaven there came a sound like a strong driving wind and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. "Then there appeared to them tongues of fire, which parted and came to rest on each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. This manifestation of the power of the Holy Spirit drew many to the house where the disciples were gathered. And as we heard, those who came, they witnessed the disciples speaking in all languages to the extent that no matter what language anyone spoke, they could understand the disciples preaching about God s deeds of power. Truly, the Spirit of God transcends even human languages and cultures and brings about the unity of God s people and the ability to proclaim the Good News in a way that all who hear can understand and believe. In our second reading from The Letter of Paul to the Corinthians, we hear that there are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; to each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. Each of us is connected intimately through grace to Jesus Christ and we have become members of his Living Body, the Church. There are many different parts, but one body and one Head who is Christ. How important that we strive through our service to build up the Body of Christ, not to tear it down. Each of us must find ways to work in and with the Church, using our talents and gifts, to bring the Church alive through our kindness and generosity, our involvement and support. All too often we find it easier to criticize the Church and its members rather than to see ourselves as responsible members of the family of Christ. By allowing the Holy Spirit to sanctify us in Christ, He who dwelled in Jesus and who raised Him from the dead, surely, by dwelling in us, He will raise us also by giving life to our mortal bodies. In thanksgiving for the blessed hope that awaits us, we are indebted to the Holy Spirit. Jesus has made clear in his farewell discourse: "If you love me, you will keep my commandments, if we do not hear God s word and keep the commandments of Jesus, then we in fact cannot love Him. Those who keep the Words of Jesus are privileged to enjoy the indwelling of the fullness of God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Not only do they enjoy the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, but Jesus promised that the Father and He would come and make their home in them. The Father sends us the Holy Spirit, as Jesus promised, so that we may be sanctified. Our sanctification is achieved through our daily personal communion with God and the Church. As we spiritually grow in Christ, God is pleased and we contribute to the growth of his Body, the Church. If we receive gifts as the disciples received gifts on Pentecost, it is for the benefit of the whole Body of Christ. Through the growth of the Body of Christ, we grow alongside the other faithful members of the Church. If the Body of Christ suffers because of the neglect of some, we all suffer. Peace be with you, Jesus promises to all who believe in him. Receive the Holy Spirit. Pentecost calls us to reflect upon the powerful gift of the Holy Spirit, sent not only to give birth and life to the Church, but to lead each of us to a life of holiness and faith. The Holy Spirit has given to us gifts, each for some benefit, but all given for the greater glory of God, the proclamation of his Truth, and the increase of the Church in the world. Let us ask ourselves today if we have allowed the Holy Spirit to freely flow through us so He can guide and teach us according to the purpose that He has been sent by the Lord God. Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. PASTOR S REFLECTIONS 1. On April 19, 2018 Magee Women's hospital recognized BOB and CARMELLA KESICKI, parishioners of Saint Paul Cathedral, as Volunteers of the Year. This award was recognized and bestowed at the annual volunteers dinner at the Schenley Golf Club dining facilities. In presenting this award, Bob and Carmella were saluted for unselfishly dedicating themselves to provide a service to those Catholics in need through the dispensation of the Holy Eucharist

3 P 3 since We are so proud of Bob and Carmella, salute their service and thank them for caring so beautifully for the sick and suffering in their time of need by bringing the gift of the Eucharist and the prayers of the Church. God bless you! 2. Congratulations to CATHERINE BLUME, daughter of Peter and Patty Blume, who graduated valedictorian in her class from the University of Dallas this past weekend. She has been named a Fulbright Scholar and will be spending a year teaching in the Czech Republic beginning this fall. Congratulations and best wishes to her! 3. OUR PARISH FOOD PANTRY serves so many people in our parish and in the community who are in need of support and assistance. Not only do they receive food, but many other services are discussed and coordinated. Most importantly, our clients are treated with dignity and respect, and they receive kindness, compassion and real friendship from our volunteers. It is an important and special ministry of the Cathedral parish. I am so very grateful to the wonderful volunteers who make our parish food pantry work so well. Thank you to the food pantry volunteers: GRETCHEN RASP, MARTHA MALINZAK, TRIS JAHANIAN, EILEEN CONROY KRAVITZ, JORGE ALBA, KATHI KENNEDY, DAVE RATERMANN, LORI KLOEHN, and BEV ROSSITER. In addition we are so very grateful to the students from the St. Anthony School Programs who help us at the food pantry. What a blessing these volunteers are to so many people. S. P C P, P PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And you shall renew the face of the earth. O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations, Through Christ Our Lord, Amen. THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION will be administered by Bishop Zubik this afternoon at the Cathedral for several hundred candidates from parishes across the diocese, including our candidates from Saint Paul Cathedral parish. The bishop will meet with the candidates and their sponsors at 2:00 pm and the Mass begins at 2:30 pm. We welcome all who will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation, along with their sponsors, parents and families. May God bless you. CONGRATULATIONS TO PATRICIA MARIE BLUME from the Cathedral parish who is receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation this afternoon. We congratulate some other Cathedral parishioners who received the Sacrament of Confirmation this year in the parishes where they attend Catholic school: FEDERICA AUTERI, THERESE BURGO, KATHERINE DUCA and CAROLA PETRUCCI. We extend to each of these young people our heartfelt congratulations and prayerful support on this important step in their faith journey. God bless you! TODAY IS PENTECOST SUNDAY. The Church celebrates the great outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon those first apostles, a day that marks the beginning of the Church. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us: On the day of Pentecost when the seven weeks of Easter had come to an end, Christ s Passover is fulfilled in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, manifested, given, and communicated, as a divine person: of his fullness, Christ the Lord, pours out the Spirit in abundance. On that day, the Holy Trinity is fully revealed. Our Easter season comes to an end after today s celebration and we return to what the Church calls ordinary time. But filled with the gift of the Holy Spirit, we carry with us the power, wisdom, courage, strength, hope, joy and love of God himself. It is for each of us, who are members of the living Body of Christ, the Church, to bring our gift of faith to the world. May the Holy Spirit help each of us to bring the Church Alive, in our families, neighborhoods, workplaces, our parish community and in the world. A SPECIAL SECOND COLLECTION FOR CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES will be taken up at all the Masses this weekend. Catholic Relief Services provides emergency assistance to so many people in our country and around the world as they respond to natural disasters and other crises that deeply affect the lives of people. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. OUR MONTHLY AFTERNOON OF EUCHARIS- TIC ADORATION will take place next Sunday afternoon, May 27. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will begin at 1:00 pm, immediately following the 12:00 Noon Mass. Evening prayer begins at 5:00 pm with Benediction. Please consider coming to the Church for some quiet prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. This is a special time for each of us to be lifted up by the real presence of our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. There are many fruits that come from Eucharistic adoration. Please come and join us!

This event begins at 6:30 pm in the parish social hall with wine, cheese and fellowship, followed by a presentation at 7:00 pm with time for questions until about 8:00 pm. All adults and young adults are welcome to join us for this opportunity to learn more about our Catholic faith. TWO HIGH SCHOOL BACCALAUREATE MASSES will be celebrated at the Cathedral this week. We welcome OAKLAND CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL on Monday evening, May 21 at 7:00 pm and CENTRAL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL on Tuesday evening, May 22 at 7:30 pm. We congratulate the graduating seniors and wish them every blessing and success. We are delighted to work so closely at the Cathedral with both of these high schools and are grateful for the many ways in which the students, and the entire school communities, have been part of the Cathedral parish. The Oakland Catholic community celebrates Mass with us quite frequently at 8:15 am and the students have helped to support our parish food pantry. Central Catholic students through the campus ministry program have been altar servers at our parish funerals, and the students have often joined us for Mass at the Cathedral as well. THE NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER AND REMEM- BRANCE FOR MARINERS AND PEOPLE OF THE SEA WILL BE CELEBRATED ON TUESDAY, MAY 22. The day is observed in conjunction with National Maritime Day in the United States of America, which has been celebrated since 1933 to honor those who serve as merchant mariners and to recognize the benefits of the maritime industry. Apostleship of the Sea (AOS) is a worldwide Catholic maritime ministry that reaches out to seafarers, fishers, their families, port personnel and all who work or travel on the high seas, regardless of race, color or creed. The maritime ministry shows the Church's care and concern to seafarers who are often away from home for many months because of the nature of their work and lifestyle. A network of AOS port offices and Catholic chaplains provides spiritual and practical assistance that accommodate a seafarer's unique lifestyle and needs.

On May 22 the Church celebrates the life of SAINT RITA OF CASCIA. For 18 years Saint Rita endured the abuses and infidelities of a violent husband and serious difficulties with her two sons who were deeply influenced by him. Her husband was murdered and Saint Rita urged forgiveness and peace in the face of her family who desired revenge for this brutal act. Saint Rita was free to pursue her lifelong desire to become a nun, seeking acceptance in the Augustinian convent in Cascia, Italy. But they rejected her three times because she had been married and only after six years did they acquiesce through her persistence and prayer. She sought solace throughout her life in the Passions and Cross of our Savior and on Good Friday, 1441, she prostrated herself before the Crucifix of Christ and begged for some share in his sufferings. She was given the Crown of Thorns, a wound on her forehead that caused Saint Rita immense suffering and pain until her death in Three days later, a notary in Cascia, recorded eleven miracles that occurred at the time of Saint Rita s death. At every stage of her life, Saint Rita bravely endured immense sufferings and many difficult circumstances, always with courage, with love, with strong faith and a desire to be joined to the sufferings of Jesus for the good of others. She was canonized in 1900 and is the patroness of desperate situations. IT WILL BE IMPORTANT FOR ALL PARENTS OF SECOND GRADE AND EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS FOR THE UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR (201819) to contact me personally about the preparation needed for the reception of the sacraments. Canon law requires that children receive their sacraments in the parish to which they are registered and belong. My permission, as pastor, is required and necessary for anyone who desires to receive their sacraments elsewhere. In addition, as the pastor, I must be able to verify that each student preparing for the sacraments is truly ready to receive them. This will require that I have I know each family and student, and that we will have the time to personally meet prior to the reception of the Sacraments. I invite all Cathedral parents of second grade and eighth grade students who will be preparing to receive First Reconciliation and First Communion, as well as the Sacrament of Confirmation, to let me know as soon as possible. There is a form that will need to be completed and returned to me as soon as possible. It is important for me to verify that (1) the family and child is registered in the parish; (2) that the family attends Mass regularly and supports the parish; (3) that the child is in a program of formation that will prepare them for the reception of the sacraments; (4) and that we will be able to maintain contact through the coming year. There will be important meetings that all the children will be required to attend, as well as the Family Catechetical gatherings that take place every other month.

6 P S M 20, 2018 P 6 ALL HOMESCHOOLING FAMILIES in the parish must make contact with me as your pastor to review the homeschooling religion curriculum so that I can insure that your children are indeed being formed in the faith in conformity to the Church s documents and guidelines. I am happy to meet with you annually and of course if there are homeschooling children that will receive sacraments, the same rules discussed above will apply. PASTOR VERIFICATION FORMS are required for any child from the Cathedral who attends a Catholic school. These are necessary to receive the Catholic tuition rate and to be eligible for any financial aid. In order for me to sign the form I must be able to know and to verify that: (1) that the child is baptized; (2) the family is a registered and active member of the parish. This requires that the family and children attend Mass regularly at the Cathedral and support the parish by being good stewards of their time, talent and treasure. If I know the family and see them at Mass it is easy to sign the form; if I do not know the family and do not see them at Mass it makes it difficult and even impossible to sign the form. For those families whom I do not know personally we will need to meet so please make every effort to schedule those meetings well in advance of the deadline as it is not always easy or possible to meet at the last minute. I am delighted that so many families in the Cathedral parish send their children to a Catholic school. Having served as Secretary for Catholic Education in the diocese for nearly 20 years, I am a strong supporter of our Catholic school families. But it makes no sense at all to send your child to a Catholic school and never come to Mass or get involved in your parish. Family, parish and school must be integral components, working together, to help instill faith and the values of faith in your child. THANK YOU BULLETIN AD SPONSORS! Help Still Needed! Mike McAleer from Liturgical Publications, our bulletin publisher, was with us this past week securing advertisers for our Bulletin. We would like to thank all of the advertisers who have generously committed to the Bulletin for this year! We still have space available and humbly ask that you consider advertising your business or remembering a loved one in our weekly bulletin. Our parish bulletin is one of our main communication tools to our parish members. It provides inspirational words from Father, Mass intentions, news, and events for the week ahead. We are thankful that this crucial communication piece is provided to our parish at no cost thanks to the generous advertising support of our parishioners and communityminded businesses. Please let us know if you can help. Sponsors of our bulletin recognize the tremendous value of connecting with our church family, who in turn respond by supporting our sponsors! If you would like to advertise in the weekly bulletin, please contact Mike McAleer at (412) or via to mmcaleer@4lpi.com. Thank you! The St. Paul Cathedral Council Knights of Columbus will be sponsoring their Annual Spring Food Drive to support our parish Food Pantry. On June 910, the Knights will distribute grocery bags after weekend Masses. The following weekend, June 1617, you are asked to return the bags with needed items. If you are not able to return your donation on the weekend, you may take them to the rectory during regular office hours. Our pantry currently is in need of nonperishable food items, especially: canned and boxed prepared dinners, juice, peanut butter, and cereal. Additionally, toiletries (soap, toothpaste, tooth brushes, shampoo and conditioner, deodorant, shaving cream and razors), paper products (toilet paper and paper towels), and cleaning products (dish soap and laundry detergent) are always valued by our clients. If you cannot contribute food items, we welcome any monetary donations to help with purchases from the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank (GPCFB). The money is used to purchase ongoing diminished items and perishable items such as produce and dairy products. The food pantry along with the facilitation from the GPCFB programs and resources, the food pantry is working to provide our patrons with increasing fresh produce rather than canned products. Thank you for your support. Please, when donating nonperishables, please check expiration dates.

7 P 7 S. P C P, P LOW GLUTEN HOSTS. In recent years, many have worked to foster an increasing awareness of the significant effects of Celiac Sprue disease on people's lives. The digestive system of those with this condition is considerably compromised by the consumption of gluten, one of the major ingredients in wheat flour. It is estimated that as many as fifteen percent of all persons of northern European origin are affected by this disease to some degree. This is a particular challenge to Catholics, who believe that the celebration of the Holy Eucharist and the reception of Holy Communion are the very source and summit of the Christian life. At the Cathedral we have the ability to use low gluten hosts for those with gluten intolerance. It is impossible to consecrate a host made of something other than wheat and water. No priest or bishop can change this longstanding teaching of the Catholic Church so there will always be a very small amount of gluten in the low gluten hosts. The policy at the Cathedral is for any person desiring a low gluten host to stop into the sacristy before Mass so the priest can place that host in a special pyx and consecrate it during the Mass. The person receiving that low gluten host would have to be sure to go into the communion line of the priest who is celebrating Mass as he will be the one that has the consecrated low gluten host. SERIES ON THE SAINTS AND STATUES OF THE CATHEDRAL (first in the series). During our most recent Wine, Cheese and the Gospel gathering, there was a desire on the part of many to know about the statues in the Cathedral. Each week we will highlight some of the statues. As you look at the sanctuary there are 6 altars. Beginning on the left we see the Blessed Sacrament Altar with two angels; the Sacred Heart altar (topped by the statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus) is where we have the ambry (the place for the holy oils to be stored and displayed). In the niches are statues of St. Charles Borromeo and St. Alice, the patrons of the donors who funded this altar in In addition there are statues of St. Aloysius Gonzaga and St. Margaret Mary Alacoque who helped to promote the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The high altar contains the large statues of St. Peter and St. Paul (patron of the Cathedral and copatron of the Diocese of Pittsburgh), topped by two angels. The Marian Altar contains on the top the statue of the Immaculate Virgin Mary (copatroness of the Diocese of Pittsburgh). In addition, there are statues of St. Joachim and St. Anne (parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary) with two angels in prayer. The last altar on the right is the St. Joseph altar with the statue of St. Joseph with two angels holding the symbols of sleep and death. The main altar known as the Altar of Sacrifice where Mass is celebrated each day contains the relics of three saints who were deeply connected to the early history of Catholicism in Western Pennyslvania: St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, St. John Neumann, and St. Francis of Assisi. THE NEXT EVENT OF THE CATHEDRAL CONCERT SERIES takes place on Sunday, June 3 at 4:00 pm. Our own Ken Danchik performs music of both French and American composers. Ken always presents a concert which includes imaginative programming and excitement. Please plan to attend. Admission to our concerts is free. An offering is welcome! For further details, please call the music office at: First Holy Communion Sunday, May 13, 2018 RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT. After his resurrection from the dead Jesus appears to his anxious Apostles and, knowing their fear and uncertainty, pours forth the Holy Spirit upon them and bestows the gift of peace. For the next forty days he promises that he will be with them always and that he will send the Advocate to be with them as they will be called to continue his work in the world. Finally, after ascending to heaven, Jesus sends forth his Spirit at Pentecost to fill the Apostles with confidence and courage in order to go out to all the world to tell the good news and grow the Church. As the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative continues to unfold we are called to prayer for a new Pentecost in the Church of Pittsburgh. This new outpouring of the Holy Spirit can bestow the peace we seek in the midst of change and planning for the future. God s Spirit can also fill us with the confidence and courage that all of usclergy and faithful alikewill need to do our part to build up the Church and make it ever more alive!
