1 St. Paul Uehling The Visitor May 2018 St. John Scribner Pentecost is a Christian celebration which occurs fifty days after the Christian celebration of Easter. Pentecost occurs on the seventh Sunday after Easter Sunday. The Christian population brought the Pentecost celebration into their religion based on the facts from the New Testament. After Jesus died on the cross, He rose from the tomb on Easter Sunday. He remained on the Earth for forty days, walking with His disciples and teaching them the word of God. In the Book of Acts 1:3, the Bible states 3 After his suffering he presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. On the fortieth day, Jesus again spoke, according to the Book of Acts 1:8, stating to His disciples that 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." The disciples returned to Jerusalem and abode in the upper room along with Mary, the mother of Jesus

2 and other persons numbering about one hundred and twenty. 1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. (Acts 2:1-4) This event is known in Christian communities as the Pentecost. The color red is used for the day of Pentecost. Red signifies the tongues of fire of the Holy Spirit set upon the disciples of Jesus on Pentecost Sunday. The vestments worn by ministers and priests are the color red. Pentecost is a day of celebration occurring fifty days after Easter. It is a celebration of a new beginning for all whether it is for the celebration of the new church, a celebration for renewal of spirit within oneself and/or a celebration of the Holy Spirit giving God s wisdom to the disciples. Pentecost is a day of the new spirit, a day of a new beginning. 5 Faith Food Pantry VOLUNTEERs can make a difference BE ONE! The Faith Food Pantry continues serve clients in several counties Dodge, Washington, Burt, Cuming and volunteers are always needed to make this ministry work. Food will be delivered from the Food Bank of the Heartland, Omaha May 11th this month after 3:30 p.m. to the Immanuel Lutheran School Gymnasium east of Winslow. The food is then distributed to the clients the second Saturday of the month (May 12th this month). In April food was distributed to 124 households totaling more than 300 people. There is great need for volunteers to help get the food organized on Friday when it is delivered and for the distribution of this food on Saturday morning. It is our hope that all of you might find 2 hours to donate on the second Saturday of the month to come and experience this event. We are so very grateful to the efforts of organizations and churches who support the pantry with generous donations and to all the volunteers of all ages who help with the tasks of the pantry. Without this community support, the Faith Food Pantry would fail to exist. It is an awesome experience/feeling to be able to touch the lives of these people. If you are in need of a birthday, sympathy, get well, thinking of you, baby, wedding etc. you will find it there. We encourage everyone who would like to be involved in the worship services to sign up OR you could just talk to one of the two of us too. *+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+* FALP News As announced at worship in February, Pastor Joel will be retiring this coming July. We are grateful for his many years of leadership in our communities. The FALP council has had contact with the Nebraska Synod ELCA office, and a meeting with the Bishop and his staff is scheduled for March 28. Discussion at that meeting will give us information about the Synod s call process for our parish and for the transitional pastor while we are in that call process. Updates will be given to all parish congregations as we have more information. The FALP covenant which was approved by all five congregations outlined the steps our parish will follow: VI. CALL PROCESS A. The Parish Council designates a Call Committee made up of members from Parish congregations. B. The Call Committee (following guidance of the Nebraska Synod ELCA Bishop) interview and make recommendation of a pastoral candidate to the Parish Council. 6

7 C. The Parish Council will then present the candidate to each of the active congregations to approve or disapprove based upon the individual congregation s bylaws/constitution. D. Following each congregation vote elected representatives on the Parish Council will bring their congregation s vote to the Parish Council to report the congregation vote. Representatives are bound by the congregational vote. E. The representatives vote will be weighted according to the congregation s Communing, Contributing, Confirmed (CCC) established for the current year. F. Approval of the candidate will be on a 2/3rds vote of the Parish Council, weighted according to the current yearly assessment formula. 8 We are excited to have you join us at the 2018 NE Synod Assembly. As we gather in assembly to elect a Bishop you will be participating in building the foundation for the future of the Nebraska Synod. All worship centers, synod serving arms, and organizations joining together at the Synod Assembly on May 31- June 2, 2018 are invited to bring a wood block to build the foundation of a cross at the assembly. Your wood block should be an 8-inch-long piece of 2 by 4 that is painted, written on, and decorated so that it represents who you are as a valued part of the Nebraska Synod. Use your creativity to show who you are through your wood block. We need to have uniformity in our wood blocks so please do not exceed the 8-inch-long piece of 2 by 4 and keep all sides as smooth as possible so that the foundation we will be building is sturdy and strong. Trinity Sunday is the first Sunday after Pentecost (May 27th this year) and honors the Holy Trinity the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The concept of the trinity can never be completely understood or rationalized, but it is clearly taught in Scripture. Understanding of all scriptural doctrine is by faith which comes through the work of the Holy Spirit; therefore, it is appropriate that this mystery is celebrated the first Sunday after Pentecost, when the outpouring of the Holy Spirit first occurred. On Trinity Sunday, the Christian Church ponders with joy and thanksgiving what the Father, Son and Holy Spirit have done to accomplish the salvation of sinful humanity. It is brought to remembrance how Christians should respond to the love God has shown us, praising Him and giving Him glory. We remember the Father as our Creator, the Son as our Savior and the Holy Spirit as our Comforter. 9

Memorial Day is a solemn day of remembrance for everyone who has died serving in the American armed forces. The 10

11 holiday started after the Civil War to honor the Union and Confederate dead. In the years following the Civil War, Memorial Day celebrations were scattered and, perhaps unsurprisingly, took root differently in the North and South. It wasn t until after World War II that the holiday gained a strong following and national identity, and it wasn t officially named Memorial Day until The final event that cemented the modern culture of Memorial Day in America was in 1968 when Congress passed the Uniform Holiday Act, designating Memorial Day as the last Monday in May rather than May 30, as it had previously been observed. This ensured a three-day weekend and gave the day its current status as the unofficial beginning of summer, mixing serious reflection with more lighthearted fun.
