2 St. Theresa Church November Page 2 Pastors Column: Masses for the Week Is it the first Sunday of Advent already? Christmas is coming! I guess that you are like me thinking ahead and trying to get things ready. For the past three weeks I have been working on the Mass schedule for the Christmas Weekend, checking with the various priests and seeing what Masses they can help with, getting my Christmas cards in order, talking with the Art and Environment Committee to see how we are going to decorate this year,... It takes a lot of work to have everything ready so we as a Community of Faith can celebrate the Birth of the Lord. Needless to say, if we can spend all this time preparing the physical items, how much more should we spend time preparing the spiritual. Perhaps a bit more time in prayer or bible reading each day? The Sacrament of Reconciliation for sure. Maybe attending an extra Mass each week? Since Christ gave himself for our salvation, maybe I can give a bit of myself for others... maybe volunteering at the hospital, a food program, a shelter,... somewhere. Did you ever notice how a big celebration can occasionally leave you empty and tired. Maybe you gave your all, but all you felt was tired? Maybe something was missing? We can give ourselves completely for others and still feel empty! Perhaps we have to give something to ourselves and others. Keep Christ in Christmas Keep Christ in YOU! This article is being written before Thanksgiving. Hence the most up to date DDF numbers are not available. As I write this we are about $ 7, short of our goal. Can you please help as others have? 4 Page 4 Children s liturgy of the Word No pre-registration needed Children in grades K-5 are invited to participate in the Children s Liturgy of the Word during the 10:00 a.m. Mass Children Liturgy 12/ 4, 11, 18 Read With Me!! We are starting a new ministry to help children wo are having difficult leaning to read and become fluent in English. We are asking for volunteers who can spend one or two hours a week working in a classroom at Cathedral City Elementary School under the direction of a teacher. Each volunteer will be assigned specific children and will be provided with the appropriate materials. There are over 700 volunteer involved in the Read With Me program working primarily in the far east valley. Our kids face the same challenges, we are therefore starting the program here in Palm Springs Unified School District. Anyone interested in joining this prize winning program is invited to join us for coffee and refreshments and lean about the ministry. Thank you for your donations! BE PREPARED Be prepared. It s that simple. As this Advent season opens before us, the Lord Jesus summons us to stand ready for his coming. At this time of year much of our attention is focused on being prepared for the details that accompany the holiday season. We purchase gifts; we decorate our homes, inside and out; we prepare foods that we eat only during the holidays; we write and send Christmas cards; we attend holiday concerts; we prepare either to welcome family and friends into our homes or arrange for visits to their homes. We really can t escape the details that make up the season. Perhaps this Advent is a time to attend to all those details with a different spin. As we prepare to celebrate the feast of Christmas, why not be deliberate about acknowledging the presence of the Lord as we go about these tasks? The Lord often comes to us in wonderfully surprising ways. Let us be prepared. ESTAR PREPARADO Debes estar preparado. Es así de simple. No podemos ignorar los detalles que forman parte de este tiempo. Quizás este Adviento sea un tiempo para prestar atención a todos esos detalles con un enfoque diferente. Mientras nos preparamos para celebrar la fiesta de Navidad, qué tal si reconocemos plenamente la presencia del Señor mientras realizamos estas tareas?
