2 Pastoral Reflection April 2017 As we conclude our Lenten journey and prepare to enter the new life of the Easter season, I want to share with you one of my favorite Easter reflections. This is a poem by artist and author Jan Richardson, and as I read it, I am reminded of Luke 24:5, "...they said to them, 'Why do you look for the living among the dead? Peace be with you, Pastor Marsha Easter Blessing If you are looking for a blessing, do not linger here. Here is only emptiness, a hollow, a husk where a blessing used to be. This blessing was not content in its confinement. It could not abide its isolation, the unrelenting silence, the pressing stench of death. 2

3 So if it is a blessing that you seek, open your own mouth. Fill your lungs with the air that this new morning brings and then release it with a cry. Hear how the blessing breaks forth in your own voice how your own lips form every word you never dreamed to say. See how the blessing circles back again wanting you to repeat it but louder how it draws you pulls you sends you to proclaim its only word: risen risen risen. 3

Affirmation of Welcome Statement The people of Grace ELC embrace and seek to celebrate the beautiful, amazing diversity of God s creation and affirm the dignity and worth of every person created in the image of God. We believe God loves us all and calls us into community to share the good news of God s love. In covenant, as members of Christ s Church, we celebrate God s love for people of every race, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, faith, nationality, ethnicity, marital status, and physical, mental, and emotional ability. We believe it is time for our church to open its doors to the movement of God s Holy Spirit and to be open and affirming of all people, wherever they find themselves in the journey of life. At the same time, we recognize that there remain differences of opinion among us. We do not seek to erase our differences. We welcome all in our journey together in faith toward greater understanding and mutual respect. Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. Romans 15:7 6

God knew I was gay before calling me to ministry, even though I didn t. And God called me to know (and love) myself, that I may know and love God and God s creation. My own and other people s perceptions are what gets in the way and my sense is that God is saddened and kind of mystified by that. March 19, 2017 Dear Members and Friends of Grace & St. John s, Kathy and I would like to apologize for not serving breakfast on March 19th.

I really thought we were only at the second Sunday of the month and wouldn t have to cancel breakfast.

I d like to blame the pain meds I was on, but if I want to be honest with myself and to all of you, I need to take the blame for not realizing

We are both fine now, but I did have a medical emergency on Friday afternoon that was not resolved until Saturday. I really thought we were only at the second Sunday of the month and wouldn t have to cancel breakfast. Kathy s thoughts were only on getting my medical needs addressed. I d like to blame the pain meds I was on, but if I want to be honest with myself and to all of you, I need to take the blame for not realizing what weekend it was. 11 Congratulations Diane Ohlinger and Grow in Grace Tutoring! Diane Ohlinger is this year s recipient of the Volunteer Award at the annual breakfast of the Ready.Set.Read! literacy program held at the Crowne Plaza on March 16. Diane was honored for her work in directing Grow in Grace Tutoring, which uses the Ready.Set.Read! Program to assist children from Amanda Stout and 10th and Penn Elementary Schools improve their reading skills. Thanks to the many volunteers who come to Grace each Tuesday afternoon to help the children become better readers and achieve greater success in life. Their commitment helps the children know Grace as a safe place in which they can grow while having fun. 11

We are in need of CLOTHING (no shoes!), BOOKS (no magazines!) and WHITE ELEPHANT ITEMS (small appliances must be in working condition). These items will be accepted starting now and can be brought to the church any weekday morning or on Sunday mornings. The FOOD ITEMS on the bottom of this form will be accepted the day of the Spring Fling. HOMEMADE BAKED GOODS are in great demand; we never have enough of those great goodies! We ask that all food donations be at the church by 9:00 a.m. on May 20. There will be hot dogs, hamburgers, and beverages for those who need a lunch pick-me-up. Berks County Meals on Wheels Needs Delivery People!

You may volunteer with a friend to form your team of two, or Meals on Wheels can supply a runner for you.

13 Berks County Meals on Wheels Needs Delivery People! Will you volunteer 60 to 90 minutes once a month, once every two weeks, or even weekly to bring a meal and support to homebound senior citizens who rely on the Meals on Wheels program for a weekday nutritious meal? Volunteers are needed at all locations, but most especially in the downtown Reading area. The meals are packed and ready to be picked up Mondays Fridays, between 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. at 40 North 9th Street, Reading. The best way to deliver is to have two people on a route so that the driver remains with the car and the runner takes the meal to the door. You may volunteer with a friend to form your team of two, or Meals on Wheels can supply a runner for you. If a driver would like to have mileage reimbursement, Meals on Wheels will provide this as well. If interested, please contact Elanore Herbst, Reading Center Meals on Wheels Coordinator, at x236. Be Part Of The Great American Clean-Up In Our Neighborhood Everyone who lives, visits, works, or worships in the city of Reading, is invited to join in the city's 24th Annual Great American Cleanup on Saturday, April 22. We at Grace will start at 9 am and clean around the outside of the church, including parking lot and alleys. As in previous years, after clean up we meet at Riverfront Park for a celebration which includes all participants of the city clean up. Supplies for clean up will be provided by the city. There is a sign up sheet located on the table outside the Fellowship Hall near the library. Please join us for this event and sign up no later than Sunday, April 2. Miss Diane will register our church with the city. This a national initiative of Keep America Beautiful and will not only beautify our environment but assists in building our community.
