Parishes of The Roman Catholic Diocese of Erie, Pennsylvania Dear Parish Family, I encourage you this week to be aware of the special daily Mass schedule this week, as we will be celebrating a Holy Day of Obligation -- All Saints Day, and its companion feast -- All Soul's Day. Additionally, we will have our First Friday devotions: Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament at Mt. Calvary Church, which is followed by the usual mid-day Mass. Devotion to the memory of the holy ones of heaven and saints often reminds me that we are not alone in this process of preparing for heaven. Those who "made it" are rooting us on. I recently came across this beautiful exhortation by a saint I actually met, Pope Saint John Paul II. It is taken from his writing entitled "Draw Near to God." It would be great to frame these words and hang them at the entrances of each of our two churches. It reads: Many people today are disoriented and lost in search of genuine fellowship. Often their lives are either too superficial or shattered by brokenness. Their work often is dehumanizing. They long for an experience of genuine encounter with others, for true fellowship. Well, is this not precisely the vocation of a parish? Are we not called to be a warm, brotherly family together? Are we not people united together in the household of God through our common life? Your parish is not mainly a structure, a geographical area or a building. The parish is first and foremost a community of the faithful. This is the task of a parish today: To be a community, to rediscover its identity as a community. You are not a Christian all by yourself. To be a Christian means to believe and to live one's faith together with others. For we are all members of the body of Christ... For fellowship to grow, the priest's role is not enough, even though he plays an essential role. The commitment of all parishioners is needed. Each of their contributions is vital. What I get from this small portion of his writing is this: We all have to work together to make a parish effective in its mission. I am the pastor -- and I accept this responsibility freely. But I need you to help me to re-vitalize the parishes. I can supply the vision and direction, but I need you to supply the drive and the energy to get there. Ask yourself, Why do some parishes seem to be so "together" while others seem to wane? I believe it is that vital parishes gather around the pastor to form and execute the mission of the parish -- to preach Jesus Christ crucified. Jesus Christ must be the core of every Mass, prayer, group, and activity. Without that, we become nothing more than a coffee klatch or a social group. We must become more than that. None of us would die for a party, but we would offer our lives for our loved ones. And when the Pope speaks of fellowship, it is not merely a social group of friends. It is a gathering of Jesus s friends who do His will. I hope you have a blessed week. Please make time to attend Mass on Wednesday and Thursday and if possible, join us for First Friday devotions. A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE In today s gospel, the Pharisee was talking about commandments, and Jesus was talking about love. One demands allegiance; the other requires personal commitment. In our families, we daily lay down our lives for each other not because we have to, but because love compels us to make sacrifices. MARRIAGE MOMENTS Nov. 1 is All Saints Day. You know your beloved s best and worst qualities. Focus on his or her saintliness today and write a paragraph describing the saintly qualities of your spouse. The One-Hour difference: Religion The moment someone becomes a parent, worry sets in. From food and sleep to TV time and social activities, parents spend an incredible amount of time worrying about whether they are doing the best things for their kids. Hundreds of articles can be found on parent guilt feelings of inadequacy and the fear of wrong decisions-and even more information on making your child the best he or she can be. As kids get older, parents spend hours researching and investing in a child s academics, after school activities and their friend choices. However, according to data from the Erie County PA Youth Survey (PAYS), it seems many parents are missing a free tool that may have the biggest overall impact on the life of their children. Two pieces of data from the Youth Survey really stood out: first, kids who attend a religious activity one hour a week have better outcomes in just about every area of their life, including academics, self-perception, happiness and violent tendencies, Andrea Bierer, Community Action Plan Coordinator for UnifiedErie, said. The second was that participation in organized religion in Erie County has dropped in the last decade and is now well below both the national and state levels. In 2013, only percent of youth were participating in religious activity one hour per week. According to Bierer, this drop means that fewer children are experiencing the benefits of organized religion. Specifically, the data showed that a child who participates in organized religion one hour or more per week is: More likely to get As and Bs Less likely to get Cs, Ds and Fs Less likely to consider suicide Less likely to be sad or depressed Less likely to think they re a failure Less likely to use cigarettes, alcohol, or marijuana Less likely to engage in violence More likely to be honest with parents More likely to ask a parent for help with a personal problem The definition of what constitutes a religious activity was not limited to a specific religion or a specific activity. It just mattered that they went, Bierer explained. It s really the best one-hour investment you can make in the life of a child. The Religiosity team of UnifiedErie has launched an awareness campaign called Take Me to Worship to educate moms, dads, and caregivers on the impact religion makes on the life of a child.
