MARK & MOUNT CALVARY PARISHES OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT ON WEEKEND MASS SCHEDULE CHANGES FROM THE PASTORAL COUNCIL You may recall that shortly before Father officially became our pastor, he and the Pastoral Planning steering committee from both parishes were charged to form a working weekend and daily Mass schedule. We then developed the current provisional Mass schedule which would be in effect for several months until we had a better sense of how the new partnership would go. In April, the parish office sent a survey sheet to each registered household. After the May deadline, the parish office forwarded those same survey sheets to The Neilson Company which, as you know, evaluates data for use in the business and academic world. After about 8 weeks, the results were summarized and returned to Father Mark with several recommendations. All the information was shared with the new Pastoral Council for our discernment. That s when the hard part began. We spent several weeks reviewing your input as collated through the Neilson Company s summarization report. We then met several times to pray and discern the important facets of building a Mass schedule. Just to let you know The Neilson summary indicated that we should go down to two weekend Masses total: one on Saturday afternoon and one on Sunday morning. However, Father Mark, Deacon Jim, and the counsel felt that such a move would not be of benefit to us at this time. Thus, we decided to retain a THREE Mass weekend with the hope to try to grow our numbers by making our parishes more attractive with better liturgies, community building opportunities, and ministries. However, that will all be ultimately determined by our membership s involvement and participation. Let s hope for the best. So now, here are our findings: We decided to keep the Saturday evening Mass at 4:00pm. It is well attended and meets the needs of our people. However, a large number of attendees are members of St. Mark s Parish. Thus, we decided to move the Mass to St. Mark s Church. Sunday earlier morning Mass will be celebrated at Mt. Calvary, but at the revised time of 8:00am. The committee recognized that having a Sunday Mass was important to the Mt. Calvary community. Also, this Mass time provides for those who requested an 8:00am Mass. Another bonus is that this time slot allows Father and Deacon the time to spend with the parishioners following the 8:00am Mass. And finally, we decided to keep the 10:30am Mass as it is at St. Mark s Church. This still allows plenty of time for faith formation or social gatherings before the Mass. Again, Father Mark and Deacon Jim will do their very best to make time to be present at these events in order to support the church community. The start date for this new schedule is the weekend of September 23/24. We felt that postponing the new Mass schedule had no benefit. In fact, we knew that you were anxiously waiting to hear the results of discernment process. As members of the newly formed Joint-Pastoral Council, we were delighted with the process of consultation and the amicable conversations we encountered. We recognize that while all of us wish things could go back to the way it used to be years ago, like you, we understand that our future success depends on our love of Jesus Christ which compels us to work together within today s circumstances. We want to be clear; we didn t vote we discerned which is more in keeping with two communities who respect one another. There were no winners and losers. We asked ourselves how we can best discern the will of Our Lord in this very challenging decision. All the council members are at peace because both communities were embraced as true partners in faith, not as members of a forced friendship. The next step will be for our parish office to develop a RE-CENSUS process for both parishes, which will likely take place in late September. This will allow us to have a better picture of who our parish families actually are, as currently we have incomplete and/or stale information. Updated information is essential in forming programs and ministries which will benefit the parish. More on that process soon. Again I (we) thank you for your input in the survey. We wish we could make everyone happy, but as you know, that is not possible. However, please know that your voices were heard and respected. It is a good schedule we can all live with. Thank you!

A person need not be dying, but simply sick from a serious illness or even weak due to old age. Those wishing to be anointed, especially if you are entering the hospital, please contact the parish office. We are almost ready, except that there are a significant number of ministers who did not respond to the request to provide information. Our office will send out a SECOND request so that we can move forward. When you receive your info sheet, please respond within a week so we have time to input data and produce a new schedule, effective the weekend September 23rd. NOTE: those without will receive their schedule via US Postal Service. For visits and/or Communion calls to the sick, shut-ins and those confined to hospitals, please notify the parish office. PARISH MEMBERSHIP Please fill out the form found inside this bulletin and we will mail you a registration form. All those who are out of high school should register individually. ACTIVE parish membership is required to be a sponsor for Baptism. Planning Ahead: Musical Passion Play In an effort to promote mutual cooperation and enhance our faith life at both parishes, we are planning on a FANTASTIC event: a musical Passion Play called Make Us Believers! Written and directed by Bob Summers, students from grades 4-high school AND all adults of both parishes are going to be enlisted to help produce this play at Mt. Calvary Church on Friday, March 23, 2018 (The Friday before Good Friday). More info will be available in a few weeks. This will be FUN and FAITHFUL for people of all ages! If all goes well, we may do a play during Advent 2018 at St. Mark Church. Look forward toward the future! Labor Day Mass Mark your calendars to celebrate Labor Day Mass at Mt. Calvary Church at 9:30am on Monday September 4 th. If it is nice, we may have Mass on the Lawn behind the former rectory. In inclement weather, we will be indoors in the Church. CROP Walk Coordinators Our parishes are pleased to announce our two CROP Walk coordinators: Linda Etter from St. Mark Parish and Tom Chandley from Mt. Calvary Parish. They will be meeting to form a plan to form teams and hammer out the other details. Thank you, Linda and Tom! National Day of Remembrance event scheduled in Erie All are invited to attend the fifth annual National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children event at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 5711 West Lake Road, Erie, on Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. The remembrance will be held, rain or shine, at the Knights of Columbus memorial in the infants section at the west end of the cemetery. Campout brings families together The Chastity Education Office of the Diocese of Erie is hosting a weekend campout Sept at Custaloga Town in Carlton, Pa. If a person changes, the balance is altered requiring a shift in the relationship. In today s gospel Jesus announced a change and Peter resisted. Sometimes, those we count on for support may actually get in the way. Jesus told Peter: You are an obstacle to me. MARRIAGE MOMENTS Infidelity is not always physical. A more subtle form is Emotional Infidelity. It can start when one spouse feels underappreciated and gets affirmation from someone outside the marriage. Sometimes work (paid or volunteer) or even the needs of one's own children can be the source. Giving time and attention now can prevent an emotional affair later. PREPARING FOR REMARRIAGE IN THE CHURCH? NOVA is a one-day marriage preparation program specifically designed for couples free to remarry in the Catholic Church. Topics include adjusting to remarriage, blending families, legal issues and others. Pre-registration is required. Call the Family Life Office at 814/ or 800/ ext 261 to register. The next NOVA is scheduled for Saturday, September 30th in Erie. PLANNING YOUR WEDDING? An Engagement Encounter weekend is scheduled for September 22nd through 24th at St. Mark Catholic Center in Erie. EE satisfies diocesan requirements for marriage in the Church.
